Prior to entering the mental health field, I’ve never questioned current and historical policies in regards to substance use and drug addictions. If addictions can be managed with treatment, then it only makes sense to develop policies that support rehabilitation in drug-related offenses. Knowledge really is power in shedding light to implicit biases. Objectively, a causation exists with historical policies and our current racial iniquity within the criminal justice system; also, the generation of a racialized perception for users of color. I believe that mental health work is also social justice work. Advocacy work will remain concurrent with the therapeutic techniques I am trained to do.
