I don’t. I don’t want anybody else to touch you. I’m silly. I get furious if they touch you.

If I was my own patient, I would’ve advised myself to go home and rest. But here I was, doing the exact opposite. The idea of “don’t call in sick unless you are deathly ill” is ingrained in us from the beginning of our training. I wish there was a way to rectify this culture. At the very least, I wish the guilt associated with falling sick wasn’t implanted in us since the very beginning of our careers. Doctors are humans and should feel human when they get sick. On the contrary, they are expected to show up to work when they are sick, and provide care to patients when they are in need of care themselves. Unfortunately, it’s a despondent reality with no immediate solution. It is much easier and convenient for everyone if a sick physician just shows up to work and chugs along.

It was supposed to be a chest cold
It was supposed to be a chest cold. My patient with no medical history, in the prime of her life, complaining of persistent cough. She looked fine. She was supposed to be discharged after a breathing treatment. It was supposed to be fine. The doctors assured her she would go home that night. They were so sure. Then the x Ray came back. White out on one side. It was supposed to be pneumonia. She was supposed to stay overnight. I joked that the doctors jinxed her. Spirits were high. Patient felt better after some pain meds. She was only supposed to stay for a night. Then she was only supposed to stay for two-three nights. Her pneumonia was bad, after all. But let’s get a CT scan to be sure. It was supposed to be pneumonia, maybe a pulmonary embolism at worst. But it wasn’t. The mass took up an entire side of her chest, encapsulated all mediastinal structures, put pressure on vital circulatory structures. Areas of probable metastasis. My patient was laughing and talking with her family and I was looking at her death warrant. No one expected it. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
