There are a lot of things in the animal kingdom people treat as dichotomies that aren’t actually. Toads are a family of Frog. Newts are a subfamily of Salamander. Tortoises are a family of Turtle. Hares are just one genus of Rabbit. Apes are two families of Monkey. Skates are an order of Ray. Don’t even get me started on bees and wasps.

To say that a tortoise is “a tortoise, not a turtle” is like saying a dog is “a canine, not a mammal.”

I don’t know where I’m going with this just know that there’s usually not a “this or that” in the animal kingdom; it’s called the tree of life not the seesaw of life.
