Properly Supervising Dogs
I would venture to say that many people think they are great at overseeing their dogs, but in reality, they don’t really have a firm grasp of what ideal supervision means. Further, many people lack information about their dogs’ body language – so, even if they are actually actively watching their dogs, if they can’t recognize their dogs’ stress signals, they won’t be able to help the dogs.

Are KONG Toys Good For Dogs?
You want to keep your dog stocked in plenty of toys. Toys that will have them running off all their excess energy, toys that will keep them entertained while you’re away, and toys that are just plain fun for your pooch.
But you also want to make sure that those toys are actually good for your pup. It doesn’t matter how much energy it helps work off, how entertaining it is, or how much fun your dog has with it. If a toy is dangerous, unhealthy, or all-around not good for your pup, it’s not something you want to add to your toy collection.
KONG toys are one of the most popular dog toys on the market. There are plenty of pups (and their owners!) out there who swear by them.
But it doesn’t matter if they’re popular—it matters if they’re safe. So, what’s the deal? Are KONG toys good for dogs?
What Are KONG Toys?
Before we answer the question “are KONG toys good for dogs?” let’s quickly cover what, exactly, KONG toys are.
KONG toys are rubber toys that are in a shape reminiscent of a snowman. But these toys are more than just rubber chews. The center of KONG toys is hollow. The hollow center allows you to stuff the KONG toy with food (like treats or peanut butter).
When the KONG toy is stuffed with food, it’s almost like two toys in one. The rubber acts a chew toy. But your pup has to figure out how to get to the food in the center—which also qualifies the KONG as a puzzle toy.
KONG toys come in four sizes—KONG puppy, KONG senior, KONG classic, and KONG extreme. The KONG puppy is made from the softest rubber that’s ideal for puppy teeth and gums. KONG senior is made from soft rubber (although not as soft as the KONG puppy) that’s good for aging chewers. Made from a durable rubber, KONG classic is the best fit for most adult dogs. If your dog takes chewing to the extreme, the KONG extreme (which was designed for—you guessed it—extreme chewers) is the best toy to withstand their epic chompers.
Are KONG Toys Good For Dogs?
So, now that you know what KONG toys are, let’s answer the million dollar question—are KONG toys good for dogs?
And the answer is—yes!
KONG toys are a great fit for pups. They’re made from non-toxic rubber, they provide hours of chewing and treat-finding entertainment, and they’re dishwasher safe—so when it’s time to clean out all the slobber and treat residue, all you have to do is pop them in the dishwasher. (Just make sure to wash them in the top rack.)
KONG toys are great. But it doesn’t matter how great a toy is—eventually, your pup is going to want to mix things up and play with something different! If your dog is head over heels for KONG toys, Super Chewer Dog Toys will definitely get their tail wagging.
Like KONG toys, Super Chewer Dog Toys are super durable and can withstand even the most extreme of chompers. And, like KONG toys, many Super Chewer Dog Toys allow you to stuff the center with treats—giving your dog a delicious puzzle that will keep them entertained for hours.
And if your pup isn’t too keen on the super-durable rubber toy experience, Super Chewer Dog Toys have you covered! For example, Nylon toys like Bacon Benebones or the Bark Benebone Pretzel are basically impregnable, really tasty, and really good at cleaning your dog’s tough teeth.
If you’ve got a dog that loves to chew, you want to keep them stocked with plenty of toys (not to mention treats and chews) to keep those chompers occupied. And the best way to do that? A subscription to Super Chewer BarkBox.
With the Super Chewer BarkBox, you’ll get two toys, two bags of treats, and two chews—all of which are carefully curated with super chewers in mind.

A Shocking Campaign Uses Graphic Images To Point Out The Damage That Plastic Pollution Has On The Ocean’s Wildlife
You might not think using one plastic fork on your lunch break could cause a dramatic impact on the globe but if you imagine all 7.7 billion people do that as well – the picture is quite terrifying. To put it simply we are drowning in plastic.
On the bright side, it seems like lately more people are interested in saving our planet simply because more people are aware of environmental threats and the fact that we are a big part of the problem. All the inspiring stories of positive environmental movements worldwide, including the viral #trashtag challenge, inspire us to join the fight for a brighter future.
Yet another attempt to fight the ignorance and ensure a better tomorrow is the international non-profit organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS), which aims to conserve and protect ecosystems and species in the world’s oceans by battling the destruction of marine wildlife. The group teamed up with Tribal Worldwide São Paulo and DDB Guatemala advertising agencies to implement a shocking plastic awareness campaign. 3D posters depict two marine animals – a turtle and a seal – suffering from the horrifying consequences of carelessly discarded plastics and convey an eye-opening message: “The plastic you use once tortures the oceans forever”.
More info: seashepherd.org | Facebook
“Unfortunately, a small and thoughtless action in our daily life can cause huge damage to nature without us even realizing it. In this campaign, we aim to remedy this by reaching the largest number of people possible, bringing awareness to the fact that with small and easy steps, we can ensure that terrible scenes like these do not happen,” Guiga Giacomo, Executive Creative Director at Tribal Worldwide São Paulo, said was the idea behind the campaign.

Sea Shepherd gives valuable insight on the dangerous impact that plastic has on the oceans, provides useful tips on how to reduce the use of plastic in our everyday life and carries out beach clean-up campaigns “Operation Clean Waves” around the world – all while working with scientists on making a bigger change. “Scientists warn that in 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish in the sea,” informs Sea Shepherd founder and president Captain Paul Watson, “Sea Shepherd is committed to preventing this from happening – because if the oceans die, we die.”

¿Cuándo debo ponerle abrigo al perro?
Tumblr media

How Can I Help My Dog’s Dandruff?
Dog Dandruff is a common condition experienced by dogs of all breeds, ages, shapes, and sizes. While the causes of dandruff can vary, the symptoms themselves are itchy skin and white flakes on your dog’s coat. It’s usually not a cause for great concern, but dandruff can be annoying or uncomfortable for your dog. Fortunately, dandruff is a relatively easy thing to treat and there are a range of options available.
Regular Brushing
Brushing your dog does a lot more for them than just ensuring they have a great hair-do. Brushing removes loose hair and skin cells while encouraging natural oil production. The act of brushing also distributes those skin oils across your dog’s coat. This helps to keep your dog’s skin’s moisturized and their coat nice and shiny.
Bathing
There are many gentle, anti-dandruff dog shampoos on the market. You may want to consider trying one of these when you give your pupper their next bath. In general, regular (but not over-frequent) bathing can help to ease your dog’s dandruff issues.
Consider The Environment
As you well know by now, the environment plays a big role in the health of your dog. In the colder winter months, when humidity is low both inside and outside the house, your dog may be more susceptible to dandruff. During these times of the year, a humidifier is a great way to add moisture back to your dog’s environment.
Healthy Diet
The above remedies all involve treating your dog from the outside, but as with anything that involves your dog’s wellbeing, you should also consider internal factors. It’s vitally important for a dog’s health that they take in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids through their food. These fatty acids have a bunch of beneficial effects on dog health, especially when it comes to their skin. Omega-3s and -6s contribute to good skin and coat health, which in turn can lead to reduced or eliminated dandruff.
BARK Dog Skin & Coat Supplement: Veterinarian-formulated, this supplement is made with all natural ingredients (including Omega-3, 6, 9, and Vitamin E) and comes in the form of 120 soft chews. Basically, it looks and tastes just like delicious treats, and it could really help soothe your dog in their time of need.
As always, if your pooch is a senior or is suffering from severe itching, hair loss or skin lesions, it may be time to check in with your vet.

Dogs detect ‘cork taint’ and other wine-related odors
You’ve heard of retrievers and pointers with superior instincts in field activities, and those trained to point to tell authorities where drugs or bombs are, as well as others that sense how to comfort people suffering from trauma.
Now there’s another skill dogs have been trained in, which could be as much about protecting the livelihoods of numerous businesses and jobs related to the wine-making industry as it is an impressive feat of canine noses. Two Labrador retrievers, Zamba and Mamba, are good examples of dogs schooled in how to sniff out chemicals like TCA (2,4,6-trichloroanisole) and TBA (2,4,6-tribromoanisole), harmful compounds sometimes present in wood barrels.
International barrel-making company TN Coopers, located in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, relies on dogs as part of its dog-training, chemical- and pest-detecting endeavor known as the Natinga Project.
TCA, TBA and related compounds could contaminate both flavors and aromas of the wine destined to be stored in the barrels, which could spell a disaster for the company. The dogs are trained to distinguish the “musty, moldy, wet cardboard smell and taste” known as “cork taint,” and luckily, a little TCA goes a long way.
Michael Peters, resident winemaker and sales manager at the company’s Sonoma office, says it’s a good thing, because the problem could be widespread and potentially catastrophic. “It can also contaminate wood used for barrel staves, plastic hoses, pumps, silicon bungs [the stoppers in wine barrels], fining agents, and even infect an entire cellar.”1
Like bomb-sniffing dogs taught to make eye contact or sit the moment they detect substances authorities are trying to identify and eradicate, these dogs are exposed to the odors multiple times a day, and the training is ongoing. In fact, “A trainer works with them daily, and the dogs know it’s time for serious inspection when he slips on their black harnesses.”2
What qualifies dogs to detect harmful chemical compounds?
Humans have abilities when it comes to developing the “nose” for detecting undesirable elements in wine, from vineyard to table. However, comparatively, a dog’s perceptions are much more keen. According to Bloomberg, “A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than a human’s, thanks to 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to our paltry 6 million.”3
In fact, dogs have a smelling sense that’s even more accurate than modern technology, Peters says. Among the many things dogs have been trained to do, some have been able to detect cancer in humans sooner than doctors.
The smell of prostate cancer, for instance, can be detected by dogs due to the “volatile, discernible signature in a man’s pee.” Prostate cancer has a long history of being difficult to detect, but a properly trained dog can detect it with more than 90% accuracy, according to Wired, which adds:
“Since about the early 2000s, an avalanche of findings has dramatically expanded our sense of what dogs can do with their noses. It started when researchers realized that canines can smell the early onset of melanoma.
Then it turned out they can do the same for breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and ovarian cancer. They can smell the time of day in the movement of air around a room; sense diabetic episodes hours in advance; and detect human emotional states in the absence of visual cues.”4
Scent dogs, ‘artificial noses’ and mealy bugs
Physicists, scientists and others have been trying to figure out how they might devise robots with smell receptors, otherwise known as “artificial noses” similar to one created with comparable smell skills to those of dogs, but so far, the accuracy scent-detecting dogs possess can’t be touched.
For all the things scientists and law enforcement personnel have found trained dogs to be helpful with, including search dogs, therapy dogs and the floppy-eared dogs used by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents in airports, technology is not yet up to speed, although technology used in a controlled environment has come close.
“Essentially, machines don’t sniff very well. Dogs inhale and exhale about five times every second, through nostrils that route the intake and outward flow of breath through different channels.
All that snorting creates a pressure differential — a kind of smell vortex — that helps them pull a rich, new sample into their nose with each sniff. And while the Nano-Nose might be able to narrow its focus on a target scent, a dog’s ability to do so over great distances is stunning.”5
Pests and diseases that can destroy single vines and entire vineyards are another reason why dogs are trained to help at wineries, and to do so as quickly as possible because a problem can impact the financial prospects of growers, wine producers and everyone in between.
One example: A Napa winery sued a barrel supplier in France for more than $470,000 over 10 barrels of detectable TCA. That’s a lot of money until you figure that it equates to 590 gallons of cabernet selling for $325 per bottle — ruined. TN Coopers had a similar situation 10 years ago. The problem was traceable, but that’s when the company sought out the canine smellers.
How smell can help dogs detect multiple threats
Now, puppies are being trained to detect cork taint and other problems in wine cellars, barrels and related equipment. But on the vines themselves, mealy bugs can create havoc, as well. If not caught in time, the miniscule insects can ravage individual plants and move on to destroy more plants if growers aren’t vigilant.
German shepherds, Labs, golden retrievers and crosses of the above are being trained to detect the scent of female mealy bug pheromone, the scent they emit to signal mating availability. But they may be multitasking scent dogs that can learn to identify as many as 12 odors.
There’s hope for future successes with problems with yellow jackets that suck sugar from grapes, except that trainers need to figure out how to keep dogs from getting their noses stung.
Vineyard owners are also contending with the worst pest for grape vines, phylloxera, which annihilated vineyards in Europe in the 19th century and is currently an issue in Australia. It’s just one more area of interest for vineyard owners and trained scent dogs. Michael Honig, a winery owner in Napa, says using dogs to detect problems in wineries is an “organic” solution, noting, “If you get the bugs early, you can easily treat it without blanketing the vineyard with pesticides.”6

5 Cleaning Hacks for Dog Owners Allergic to their Pet
You’re an allergy sufferer, or someone in your home is.
But your love for that four-legged, puppy-eyed ball of fluff far outweighs your irritation when your eyes are swollen, and your nose is running.
So, what do you do?
You try your best and thankfully, aside from taking an antihistamine every day, and having a hypoallergenic dog, there are some top tips which can help you to live with a pet when you suffer with pet allergies.
Please be mindful though, if you have very severe allergies, you must weigh up whether it is safe for you to adopt a pet.
Tumblr media
Keep Them Out Of The Bedroom!
Whilst some owners like the idea of their dog sleeping with them, if you suffer with allergies it could be worth making the bedroom off-limits.
If they are lying next to you, or have been on your bed all day, you are being exposed to the allergen whilst you sleep.
You’ll get irritated, get watery eyes, have a runny nose, start itching, start sneezing.
No-one is going to get any sleep. A dog free bedroom at least means you’ll get a decent night’s sleep!
Keep Your House Clean… ALWAYS!
We’re not saying you don’t have a clean house, but for allergy sufferers, it pays to spend a little more time getting into every crease and fold of fabric and upholstery.
Dog hair can get everywhere!
Whilst a quick vacuum would usually be enough, for allergy sufferers, spending that extra time in the edges and under sofas or beds will really help keep dander at bay.
Use the dusting accessory on your vacuum as opposed to a duster or microfibre cloth – they just move the hair and dander around; the vacuum accessory will get rid of it.
Invest In A Pet Vacuum
Whilst they are often more expensive, they are worth it. They often come with pet hair accessories which makes it even easier to rid your home of hair and dander.
Most pet vacuums will have specific SEPA filters or seals which trap dust and allergens inside; this is crucial as you don’t want them being thrown straight back into the air that you breathe.
Daily vacuuming can help keep your allergies at bay.
Tumblr media
Regularly Wash Everything
Dog beds are a must.
Get into the habit of washing your dog’s bed at least once a week. Use standard detergent and let it air dry outside where possible.
Vacuum beds in between washes. If your dog sleeps on human sofas or beds, place throws or blankets over them that you can easily wash (double up so you can still cover the spots whilst the usual blankets are being washed).
Try to keep rugs to a minimum, along with carpeted areas. Hard flooring is much easier to keep clean; you can simply vacuum and mop the allergens away. It takes a little more organisation to regularly clean your carpets and rugs!
If you have a less mobile dog, place easy to wash mats around the home as opposed to thick carpet rugs.
Do They Need Their Own Room?
If your allergies are becoming unmanageable, is it worth limiting your dog’s access to certain parts of the house?
Perhaps you have a lounge with hard-flooring, leather sofas which can all be easily wiped down and cleaned?
Could you spend time with your dog in this room, but other rooms with fabric and upholstery are off-limits to him?
Kitchens, halls and well-planned lounges are usually easy to keep clean, and this would probably be ample space for him to explore?
Use baby-gates to partition areas and you can somewhat limit your exposure to allergens.
Summary
Having allergies to dogs whilst living with them can be difficult but not impossible.
The most important thing is to keep your home clean. Regularly wash bedding and blankets and limit your dog’s access to certain rooms if necessary. If you suffer with severe allergies and are struggling to manage them, please seek the advice of a Doctor.

Fresh Cooked Dog Food Is Best. Are You Ready To Make Your Own?
If you watched the eye-opening documentary Pet Fooled on Netflix, you may be left wondering what now? While the film sheds a not-so flattering spotlight on the American pet food industry, it leaves viewers with few practical solutions for healthy feeding.
The featured veterinarians definitely skew towards a raw, biologically-appropriate feeding protocol, but they also acknowledge that raw diets are yet to be deemed safe by the AVMA.
If you are not yet ready to take the plunge into raw feeding, but you want to break free from the processed kibbles offered by the major pet food conglomerates, consider a fresh cooked diet instead!
Why Should You Choose A Fresh Whole Food Diet?
Diet plays a major role in many of the ailments veterinarians treat on a daily basis including allergies, cancer, and diabetes. In response, they are shying away from commercial pet foods and endorsing natural, whole food diets instead.
Home cooking can be time-consuming and expensive, but fresh feeding is the best way to ensure a happy, healthy pup. Just think of the time and money you’ll save on trips to the vet!
My Experience With Home Cooking
After watching Pet Fooled, I decided to cook fresh homemade food for my three senior dogs. The above photo shows my own vet-recommended concoction of chicken, beef, pork, kale, sweet potatoes, green beans, kidney beans, turmeric, ground mustard, coconut oil, calcium tablets, and garlic. (Some sources say the proper use of garlic can be beneficial to dogs.) I decided to skip the rice because my dogs are grain-free.
As you can see, they are pretty excited for their new food!
If you are ready to try cooking for your own pets, consult your veterinarian. He or she can help you decide on the best individualized recipe for your pets’ unique needs or refer you to a veterinary nutritionist.
Some of the many benefits of home cooked dog food include:
You control exactly what goes into your dog’s body
It fulfills their dietary needs – nothing more, nothing less
Prevents exposure to additives, preservatives and artificial ingredients
Eliminates unnecessary and low-quality fillers like corn and soy
Helps manage your dog’s weight, blood sugar, kidney function, gut flora, skin conditions, etc.
Lets you avoid the stress and danger of commercial pet food recalls
Improves overall health and helps prolong your dog’s life
They love it!
However, there are also several challenges to making your own dog food:
It can be messy and time-consuming
High quality, fresh ingredients are expensive and perishable
Depending on the number of dogs you have and their size, you may be cooking dog food several times a week
You must know and avoid foods that are dangerous to dogs
The recipe must be followed carefully and completely to ensure well-rounded nutrition (most vets recommend 40% Protein/50% Veggies/10% Starch for dogs with no special needs)
Food ingredients alone are not enough. You must measure and add the proper mix of vitamins and minerals
Cooked food should be pureed with a food processor or hand mixer to ensure that the ingredients are well mixed and evenly distributed
Homemade food is very dense and concentrated so it must be carefully measured to prevent upset stomach, illness or deadly bloat
Excess portions must be carefully stored to prevent spoiling

In yesterday’s comments, Holly asked:
What were the largest kittens you’ve ever had born?(Weight-wise)
Unfortunately, I can’t really answer that, because I don’t weigh them when they’re born (though I probably should) because I’ve always tried to avoid handling newborn kittens so that I don’t stress out their mama(s) more than I have to. I don’t remember thinking “Holy COW, that’s a big kitten!” about any of them in particular, though it’s possible I did at the time, and just don’t remember.
However one kitten did come to mind – the one I occasionally referred to as “Little Big Head.” That, of course, was Khaleesi’s kitten Puff, who had the biggest, roundest head I’ve ever seen on a kitten.
Tumblr media
Puff became Hook when he was adopted (joining his big brother Flynn, who was Kohle when he was with us for a few weeks back in 2012), and not long after I read Holly’s comment, Selena happened to share some pictures of Hook and Flynn.
This is how we start our Mondays. Hook has to have his brother time. Flynn is sweet enough to deal with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Hook’s face is cracking me UP.)
Tumblr media
I just love seeing that brudderly love!
(Thanks, Selena!)

This is a screenshot from the Nest cam yesterday. You can’t see him all that well, but Charles is in the gray bed in the upper left corner of the room, and Caroline is in the pie plate in front of the window, in the lower right corner of the room. The only way they could have gotten any more distance is if Caroline had gone into the closet and slept in the litter box.
Tumblr media
I have yet to walk into the room and find them curled up together, but if they’re in the right mood (sleepy and not hungry), when I sit down on the floor they come and hang out with me, and with each other. (They hang out with each other plenty when I’m not in the room, too, they just tend to retreat to their own corners to sleep, it seems.)
Tumblr media
This happens a LOT. So sweet.
Tumblr media
…so snuggly…
Tumblr media
So ADORABLE.
Tumblr media
“I love youuuuuuu.” “I love you toooooo.”
Tumblr media
And then apparently it becomes time for Charles to bunny-kick his pregnant teenage bride in the head. As you do. (Don’t feel bad for her. She starts most of the play-fights, and she’s really good at ending them, too.)

The little kicked-out leg cracks me UP. That Alice Mo certainly does love her some sunshine.

Is it fun to complain?
We have some clients who just love to complain, or at least that's how it seems.  We have to wonder, why do they keep coming back if things are so horrible?  I just have to assume that they complain everywhere they go, it's just a way of life for these people.  Does it hurt to be satisfied?  I don't get it.  Today J had to deal with one of her complainers.
Mrs. S. apparently really loves the way J does her dog, though you'd never know it.  She once brought the dog to a "cheaper" (her words, not ours) groomer, and had to bring her to J the next day to have her fix the haircut.  After that, she swore she'd stay loyal to J.  She likes to complain.
She complains the haircut takes too long.  No matter what time J tells her to come, she always comes a half hour earlier, then acts very annoyed and huffy when the dog isn't done.  By the way, she's always the last one in the door in the morning, as she doesn't like to get up too early.  Guess what?  The last dog in the door in the morning does not get to be the first one finished.  Surprising?
She complains about the cost of the haircut, apparently forgetting the "cheap" groomer experience.    She complains when the dog has to be shorter than she wanted.  Never mind she puts off  the dog's haircuts as long as she can, and doesn't ever brush her.    Here was today's complaining conversation when J brought the dog up at go home.
J:  Wow, Blackie was extra dirty today, I had to give her 2 baths. This was just an observation, small talk if you will.. the black dog came in grey, she was actually that dirty.  But, hey, dogs get dirty.
Mrs. S:  OH.. is THAT why it was so expensive this time??
J:  No, I charged you the same as last time, and the time before.  I didn't charge for the extra bathing.
Mrs. S:  Well, I spend more on her haircut than I do my own! Don't even get me started on this comment!  We get it all the time!  You can't think of any reasons why it might be more expensive to have the dog groomed?  Hmm.. Nail trim, full body bath (not just their head!), ears cleaned, brushing out tangles (hopefully you don't have tangles in your hair when you show up at the hairdressers)anal glands expressed..  OH, and wait.. you hold still for your haircut!
J:  Well, she does have alot of hair. What else can you say?
Mrs S:  Why WAS she so dirty??? Huh?  How the heck do we know why she is dirty?  Does she think we threw dirt on her when she came in the door?
J:  I don't know, maybe because it's dusty and dirty in the fall.  Do you bathe her at home?
Mrs. S:  NO..That's what I pay you for.  Nice.
Mr. S dropped the dog off this morning.  He was more pleasant.  When J asked how he wanted the haircut he replied "you always do such a good job, that's why I drive 45 miles to come here".  Well, it's actually 45  miles round trip, but who's counting.  I wish he'd tell his wife that J always does such a good job.
I can only believe that with out a complaint of some sort, Mrs. S's day is not complete.  It gets really old.  I would think it would be exhausting to be that crabby all the time.   We end up working twice as hard to attempt to make these people happy than we do the rest of the clientele.  That is just not ok.  I'm sure anywhere you work there are Mrs. S-type people.  What makes them so unhappy?  I'm sure I'll never know.
