Rudy, after the gang binged Avatar the Last Airbender over a weekend: Three of the four elements are represented as types of hockey. Air hockey, ice hockey, and field hockey. Fire hockey needs to be a thing.  Aiden: Fire hockey absolutely does NOT need to be a thing.  Aru: Do you care NOTHING for the balance of the four elements?!

Why you should read Frances Hardinge's books:

Most of them have little to no romance (I hate amatonormativity)

She is really good with words? Like idk how to explain it but the way she uses them is... idk how to describe it

A lot of her protagonists can be seen as autistic or having ADHD if you autism hard enough /hj

The book covers are always absolutely gorgeous

If you know nothing else about Frances Hardinge, know that everybody who reads her books wants you - yes, you - to start reading them right now. If you've already read them all then read them again. I have a story-pellet lodged in my gullet and the fandom isn't active enough to help me cough it up!

(Unraveller is my favourite, by the way, and it's a fine place to start).

nikita uses her allowance to pay for premium features on apps like widgetsmith and fonts art and spends an hour just making her screens look pretty

meanwhile sheela just downloads a bunch of games like township and gardenscapes and gasps very loudly in front of her parents when her character dies

brynne has the same games except she’s been playing them for years and she’s in a much higher level than sheela so whenever sheela plays it in front of her she’s like “ooh…I wouldn’t do that” or “tsk tsk…that was a bad moooove”

aiden absolutely refuses to download any kind of ai app (and we stan him for it). he also has a few photo editing apps that he never uses. other than that he just has all the default phone apps because he’s a grandma ykwim

mini has good reads and checks it daily—and the nytimes games are her version of intense. she has a scoreboard with her friends but no one actually plays except for aiden sometimes. (im just projecting yall 😭)

rudy’s parents’ biggest mistake was giving him a phone. he has a six hour screen time average and half of that is on garage band and half of it is on messages—because he hasn’t discovered any actual social media platform yet

Guys I’m so sorry for the delay in posting my second chapter for Deja Vu. Here’s a quick sneak peek!!

Mama’s face held a soft smile. My waking mind traced her face and noticed how her skin was littered with sun spots, a product of her skin being lighter than mine. She looked incredibly friendly, smile lines decorating her mouth while a matching pair of crow’s feet danced in the corners of her eyes. Chai was her favorite drink, and her slightly dyed upper lip was proof of her addiction. Maybe it was the hair mehndi that she used every week to hide the white hair she got because of me, but in the early light of the Chicago sun, in a basement that usually never has sunlight reach the stairs, she looked like she had a faint halo. Sunlight seemed to flow through our basement with the sole purpose of reaching her, of being around her. 

“Good morning, Aunty,” Nidhi piped up. Advik let out a loud snort, one that was poorly disguised as a cough. Ariha and him shared a quick side-eye, a sign that they would not be letting Nidhi the Aunty-pleaser forget this anytime soon. 

“Good morning, Nidhi,” mama says as she walks toward me. I feel her hand slowly brush my head, smoothing out the fly-aways that probably snuck out while I was slipping into the crevices of our couch in the basement. As her hand came down to cradle my face, I felt the callouses present on the tips of her fingers. “Bhookh lagi hai?” she asked quietly, large brown eyes scanning my face as her hands softly wiped away the drool on the corner of my mouth. 

“Mhm,” I nodded. “I’ll make some chai.” 

“All of you are staying for breakfast, right?” mama always has a faint Indian accent after she’s spoken in Hindi. One I miss whenever she switches to her “business voice,” which is English in a faint British-American accent. She always says it’s easier to make sales when your voice sounds like something customers are used to. Personally, it’s her accented voice that I’ve always found more appealing, the same voice that she used to read out the Ramayana to me when I was small enough to sit in her lap. “If you weren’t before, tell your parents you are,” she jests, her accent completely absent from her voice now.
