Casual Thursdays: Eh?! Endings

Casual speech is such an awesome part of Japanese. It’s practically slang, and it’s often difficult for me to follow. You’ll find it in songs, anime, manga, etc. And you may find yourself saying, “Eh?! I didn’t learn that in Japanese class!” It’s okay; I didn’t either.

I was listening to a Japanese lesson on JapanesePod101, and there was a dialogue that was super casual. One particular aspect that stuck out for me was this ending; it’s not exactly a sentence ending but a word ending: え I’ve used it before unconsciously without really understanding the concept. The word I use most often is すげ (suge), which is the super casual variant of すごい (sugoi), meaning awesome.

Peter Galante explains that in the case where い (i) is the last syllable, the い syllable is often combined with the preceding syllable.

So to form this structure, when a verb or adjective ends in ない (nai; this would be the negative form of an adjective or verb), drop the ない and add ね (ne). If an adjective ends in vowel + い, drop the vowel + い and add え (e).

I’m not a pro on this form, so there’s not much I can say about it. I’m certain it will work for all verbs in the negative short form and most adjectives. There is also the negative short form of desu: じゃない (ja nai), which in this casual form, becomes じゃね (ja ne–this is not the “good-bye” ja ne, which is a shortened form of じゃまたね or ja mata ne). These are a few that I am certain on, and there are others that you can find in anime, Japanese slang dictionaries, or even just casual conversations.

Another Harvest Moon fan fiction.

I was walking down the mountain when I saw Saibara and Gray near my farm’s gates. I remembered that it was the two’s rest day. Saibara often brings his grandson to the mountain for blacksmith training during Thursdays.

“Hello Saibara! Nice to see you today near my farm. Hey, there Gray!”, I cheerfully greeted the two. It seems that they were expecting me from their reaction.

“Hi Troy”, Gray answered back. “Me and my grandpa has something to tell you, actually.”

“We’ve been waiting for you. But don’t worry, we just arrived a few minutes ago. Good work on the farm, eh?”, Saibara added.

“Wow, thanks Sir! Oh, let’s go inside! I have recently harvested corns and tomatoes. Why don’t you try them? My treat”, I offered.

“Uhmm…”, Gray muttered, then looked at his grandpa.

“Oh, come on. We’re all friends here. Follow me! My dog Klaus already knows you two, so don’t worry. He’s currently guarding the sheep and cows grazing.”

“Thank you, Troy. Next time I see you in Doug’s, I’ll treat you some fine wine! Hahaha!”, Saibara announced. The old man’s serious most of the time but when you came to know his good side, he’s really a grandpa everyone must have.

I prepared them some grilled corn and tomato sandwiches. I offered wine but the two just asked for water. We all ate inside my house. It was fun. I seldom have guests over so I was really happy to have them. I think I’ll invite friends from the village more often. 

“Hey, what were you telling me this morning, Gray? You and Saibara need something for me to do?”, I recalled, while drinking my third glass of water. It was getting hotter then.

“Ah, that one. Well, Gray, go tell him”, Saibara nudged his grandson.

“Well, Troy, last season, you asked us to upgrade your iron axe to mystryle, right? So a friend of grandpa from another town told us about a more powerful upgrade available. It can make your axe finish three stumps with just one hit!”, Gray began to get something from his large rucksack.

Gray brought out a shining light-green-colored axe. “Here it is. It’s a sample. A gift to my grandpa. It’s called a Mythic Axe. These are rare, and costs way more than mystryle.” Gray was smiling as he touched the axe’s grooves.

Saibara then said, “Troy, we learned that the material for this kind of upgrade can be found in our own winter mine. I’m not sure if it can be found in the Goddess’ mine. They said that it ‘looks like a black tree branch’. Tell me when you find it during one of your travels there. We will gladly upgrade one of your tools with it. But of course, the upgrade will cost much, as Gray said before.”

I was very awed from the sight of the axe. It was mysterious and powerful. 

“Thank you for the information, guys. It seems that based from your stories, I will have a hard time finding the mineral. Hmm. Wish me luck? I’ll immediately bring it to you when I found one”, I smiled, imagining the day I’ll have my own mythic tools.

“That’s the spirit. Thanks for the lunch, Troy! You’re cooking is great. You’ll be Doug’s rival in the next Spring Cooking Contest if you join. He’ll be happy to see you there, I presume.” Saibara was smiling as he chewed the last piece of his sandwich.

After we all finished the food, Saibara and Gray said their goodbyes. Saibara reminded me to drop by his shop if ever I have a problem with the farm tools. I promised.

I was running towards the horse’s stable to clean it when Gray called me. 

“Hey Troy, uhm can I ask for a favor?”, he was smiling.

“Yes, what is that?”

“When you find the material, can you please show it to me first before grandpa? I want to show it to Mary and her father. Yesterday, I showed them the tools and they were amazed. I want to see Mary’s amazed face again…”, he said. 

“Okay, but you’re a blacksmith too! Why don’t you use Mary as an inspiration to find your own mythic material, huh? That would be more special if you’re the one who find it”, I suggested. He’s face lit up.

“Hey, why didn’t I think of that in the first place! Wow, thank you Troy. You’re the best!”, he shook my hands.

“Oh, my pleasure. Anytime. Good luck with Mary!”, I told him.

He walked away, with renewed hopes in his heart. I heard Saibara shouting, searching for Gray. Those two really share a special bond. I wish that my own grandpa was still around…
