#sky #constellation #orion #mythology
I like that your blog is very factual and scientific, but I was wondering if you have any favorite constellation origin stories/myths?
Unfortunately I still have nothing related to this, (maybe I’ll post some sober it). But I really like the relationship between mythology (primarily Greek mythology) and astronomy. I really like the constellation of Orion.
In Greek mythology, Orion represents the giant hunter or warrior pursued by his dogs (the constellations of Canis Major and Canis Minor).
One version of this constellation tells that Orion would have fallen in love with Artemis and planned to marry, but their relationship would have been sabotaged by his brother Apollo, who did not agree with the union between a goddess and a human. Apollo had challenged Artemis to hit a distant floating target in the sea, and the goddess did, but only as he approached he saw that his arrow had indeed hit Orion, as Apollo had planned.
In other versions, however, Orion’s life ends with a tragic scorpion sting that would have been put in his way by Artemis for kidnapping one of his followers. Other tales tell that Orion said he could kill any animal, which did not please Gaia, who sent a scorpion to kill him. After his death, as reported in most versions, Zeus allowed Orion to be eternalized in the heavens at the request of Artemis.
However, Zeus caused the killer (scorpion) and his victim to remain at a distance, and for this reason the two constellations never appear at the same time in the sky.
