Concept art for The Heathen, the main villain of Grim Inquiries. Not a good dude. I imagined him to be kind of like an evil mashup of John Candy and Chris Pratt! He's also a Roman/Scottish riff on the "fat ugly bastard" trope, which surprisingly, has been around for longer than you'd think. I can't spoil the books here, but if you've read it, you know why this guy is probably one of the worst mundane villains ever written.

Concept art for chapters 2 & 3 of Grim Inquiries! This is far as I got before realizing it was too much work to illustrate all of my novels. I am, however, still proud of what I got done in only two days since drawing the style guides. It just wasn't feasible for me, but it would be cool one day to go back and do the whole thing. Of course, a manga or comic adaptation could do the same thing, so.

In the year 1350, a nameless intersex boy is sent on an impossible quest to discover the origins of the Black Plague. Travelling afar, he meets with strange and shady characters who teach him dark lessons about life and death. Over time, he becomes an investigator whose lack of identity takes on a mythical meaning. After a cross-country Eurotrip, and a brief thrill in Mauritania, he retreats to Scotland, only to find a worse challenge waiting for him there… in the form of The Heathen Lord.
