the wizarding city of new orleans reminded alexander skeeter painfully of the life he used to leave, so he and his wife, marigold, moved their little family to philadelphia where she took a job in an restaurant and alex would carry out home improvement tasks that would involve a little more magic than was allowed

when marigold became ill, alex panicked. he had no idea how to raise a child, and so rita was often left with nannies and childminders while her father threw himself into his work

when her mother eventually passed away, rita was eleven and was dangerously close to receiving her invite to attend ilvermorny. he was scared that with a halfblood status and one dead parent, their family would become a laughing stock, so they moved once again, but this time to kensington.

alex became fully submerged in pureblood society once again. he never once had to lie about rita’s blood status, as everybody seemed to assume what they wanted to. he recalled the tale many a time of the small family, living humbly in america, were thrown into turmoil with the death of his dear wife, and so sought out a new life in the uk

rita was happily shipped to hogwarts come september first, her father having charmed his way into a respectable position among his peers, and was comfortably sorted into slytherin (’ green always did suit you, honey’ he would come to tell her afterwards )

the issue of blood purity never bothered rita, and she was a prime example of how your parentage doesn’t make you any less of a person. she was gracing a world many deemed her ineligible to be i

it was during the endless parties and galas she and her father both attended and hosted, did rita learn to love the loose tongues of the elite. 

she would sit, enthralled, as the older women would sidh up the most scandalous gossip pureblooded society could conceal, while her charming smile and sharp ears led senior members of the bourgeoisie spill political plots and ploys

it was through her fathers contacts that she found herself sitting across from the director of the daily prophet, making him an offer he couldn’t refuse. 

she would write a gossip column, spilling the finest gossip, all anonymously, of course, and in return, she would take over the role of editor in chief when she turned twenty one and would be able to write entertainment columns using her real alias once she left school

the deal was done and ever since, she’s racked up the highest number of follow up letters and complaints of any column in the whole paper, a feat not achieved since the whole dumbledore fiasco

the issue of blood purity is one she cooly avoids, trying to keep her seat in society so that she can guarantee her future
