                         beat   grimaced ,    as   if   anything   to   do   with   reading   and   writing   were   equivalent   to   pulling   your   fingernails   off   one   by   one   with   a   pair   of   pliers .     “      yeah ,     last   year ,     finally .     ”     he   gave   her   a   smile   and   shrugged ,     “      so   what’cha   doin’    in   this   neck’a   the   woods ?     goin’   t’see   the   CAT   man    fer   work ?      ”

HAPPY   TO   SEE   him   relax,      mathias   lowered   his   arms   and   tilted   his   head   side   to   side   lightly   in   a   here   and   there   sort   of   motion.        ❛     work   work   work,      just   like   always.      the   heartless   really   know   how   to   keep   a   man   busy.      ❜         he   commented   lightly,      never   wanting   to   burden   or   worry   others   with   the   severity   of   his   job.         ❛     i’ve   been   great   though   all   things   considered……      how   about   you  ?      ❜

                             beat  came  closer  and  clapped  a  hand  over  the  other’s  shoulders ,   shrugging  with  a  small  hum .   “   yeah ?   iunno ,   sounds  better’n  th’nothin’  that’s  happenin’  ‘round  here .   ”   the  closeness  was  nice ,   but  he  let  him  go  quickly ,   bending  to  grab  his  board  from  where  it  sat  at  his  feet .   “   y’still  goin’  round  kickin’  ass ?   ”   when  he  stood ,   he  shot  him  a  grin  and  shoved  his  free  hand  in  his  pocket .   “   i  ain’t  been  doin’  nothin’  but  hittin’  th’books .   i’m  almost  outta  school ,  then  i  can  get  on  wid  doin’  things  i  actually  wanna  do ,   y’know ?   ”

how he'd convinced himself to do this mathias didn't quite recall, all he hoped was that beat wouldn't mind or get upset. in hindsight, he probably should've asked first, but by the time he'd considered that thought their lips were already touching, a soft press of warm lips against beat's own, chaste and gentle, something beat could back away from if he didn't like it...

                         they’d  just  been  catching  up ,   mathias  telling  beat  all  the  stories  he’d  been  through ,   all  the  adventures  he’d  had ,   everything  he’d  been  through . . .   it  all  seemed  so  exciting .   there  had  been  a  pause  between  laughter ,  both  of  them  staring  at  each  other  for  a  second  too  long  before  beat  had  been  the  first  to  crack  and  look  away ,   a  blush  rampant  across  his  cheeks .   why  did  he  feel  his  heart  quicken  and  his  breath  catch  in  his  throat  as  he  looked  into  his  eyes ?

                        of  course ,   he  knew  why .   deep ,   deep  down  in  the  recesses  of  his  being  did  he  know .   it  was  just . . .   kept  so  far  down  that  he  hardly  gave  it  the  time  of  day .   when  he  looked  at  mathias  again ,   it  began  to  claw  its  way  up .

                        without  the  time  to  register  what  it  was  that  he  was  doing ,   soft  lips  were  pressed  to  his  own ,   chapped  and  in  desperate  need  of  moisturizer .   bright  blue  eyes  went  wide  as  he  let  the  realization  of  what  was  happening  encompass  him .   he . . .   was  kissing  him .   it  was  a  kiss .   thick  brows  furrowed  together  as  he  fought  with  himself ,   but  finally  allowed  his  eyes  to  shut  and  to  return  the  kiss for  just  a  moment .   he’d  allow  himself  this  one  time . . .   this  one  moment  where  he  did  what  he  wanted  and  didn’t  fear  for  what  this  meant . 

                        a  hand  moved  up  to  cup  the  back  of  mathias’  neck ,   pulling  him  closer  for  just  a  moment  before  he  forced  himself  to  pull  away  and  look  down .   his  shoulders  slumped  forward ,   his  head  drooped  and  shook  back  and  forth .   “   what  the  hell’m  i  doin’ ,   ”   he  muttered  to  himself ,   a  hand  tugging  off  his  beanie  and  then  running  through  his  hair .

❛     i   know   i   know,      i’m   sorry,      i’m   the   worst.      ❜         MATHIAS   SCOLDED   HIMSELF   lightly   with   a   sheepish   smile,      raising   his   hands.      he’d   almost   forgotten   how……      intense   beat   could   be,      it   was   a   presence   he’d   missed   though.

                      with  a  heavy  sigh ,   a  smile  came  over  his  face .   he  couldn’t  stay  angry  at  him . . .   he  wasn’t  sure  why  that  was ,   but  he  didn’t  mind  it .   “   where  th’hell  you  been ,   dude ?   ”   he  wasn’t  one  to  talk ,   he’d  just  spent  the  last  three  or  so  months  in  his  house  rotting  away  and  studying  to  just  graduate  in  the  coming  month .   “   HOW  th’hell  you  been ?   ”

                    “   wha -   !   ”   beat  walked  after  a  moment  of  hesitation  over  to  the  familiar  face ,   eyes  wide  with  surprise  from  seeing  the  other  again .   it  really  had  been  a  long  time ,   hadn’t  it ?   “   what ?   y’just  DISAPPEAR  an’  then  show  up  like  nothin’ ?   ”
