Every 'writing prompt' I see on here is always so bad. They aren't writing prompts. They're generic contextless quotes that offer nothing as a jumping off point. They're snippets of a scene or situation that sometimes resolve itself within the prompt, leaving nothing to continue to write from. Does tumblr even know what the fuck a writing prompt is supposed to be or what they're used for?

I've been in a major creative slump since the election, but I don't think it's just been the horrors of the future getting me down. I also think my med dosage was a bit too high for me for the last couple months, and my doctor reduced it a bit just after the election. So I feel like I'm slowly starting to get motivated to write and draw again, and even wrote a bit last night (even though I hate it and will probably rewrite it). My meds were making me feel emotionally flat and uninterested in anything. They're supposed to help me with task initiation and focus, and ended up doing the opposite because I didn't care enough to do anything. But now that that I've been on the reduced dose for a little while, I'm starting to feel my interest in hobbies and things returning, including my desire to write. I think my meds adjustment still needs to level out a bit, but when it does I think I'll be able to get back to writing and drawing more regularly. At least I hope so.
I'm also planning a trip abroad to see my long distance girlfriend early next year, which isn't really relevant to this post but it feels weird not mentioning it because I'm excited about it and it's something I'm looking forward to. And I hope to have a keyboard for my iPad by then that I can bring with me, and maybe do some writing on the plane and away from home, in a totally different part of the world.

I keep going back and forth on whether or not I want to outline or wing a first draft. I changed my mind about liking what I wrote, but used it as a jumping off point to begin a rough outline. But now I'm halfway through my outline and something isn't working and I'm not sure what it is. So I've just been struggling with this wip lately. Hence my lack of activity here.

“No one wants to look at art of OCs” I don’t think that’s true at all…I follow people specifically to see their OCs literally all the time. Bring back being curious about people’s OCs, asking questions about them and hyping them up like we did when we were teens

I'm finally drafting Celestial Bodies, I only have a vague idea of the beginning, middle, and end, and no idea how I'll get there. Guess we'll see if I stick with it this time 🥲

Seen a couple posts on the dashboard lately about writing with ADHD. So, for the ADHD and neurodivergent folks who like writing but struggle sometimes… check out StimuWrite.
You can set it to make little sounds as you type (or leave them off), and emojis pop up in the corner. You can change the background, dark and light themes, set your word goal, and it gives you a percentage and total word count at the bottom. Though it’s more meant for getting a draft written up, so it doesn’t have spell check or anything like that. You’re meant to just copy and past what you write here into Google Docs or Word or Scrivener or whatever else you use and go from there. Honestly love it when I’m struggling to get words down, though. And apparently there’s an update now for StimuWrite 2?👀
Anyways, give it a try if it looks like it may help. It’s currently name-your-own-price.

How do I find other writers on here who aren't pearl clutchers obsessed with pure and wholesome 'relatable' characters and are adults who write and read things other than YA and fanfic?
Would love to follow other writers in their 30s and older specifically, but anyone over the age of 21 would be fine too.

Finished writing the creation myth for the world of my novels and figured out some stuff about the plot and character arcs for Celestial Bodies in the process. It feels so nice to finally be making some progress. I guess I called it when I thought I wouldn't fully shift into writer mode until autumn arrived. Now here I am.
I'm a pantser in that I don't like to outline, but I still plan because I write a bunch of world building and lore stuff that helps me psychoanalyze my characters in the process and better inform what I want to happen. I guess maybe I'm a plantser then.

At my last therapy appointment we reevaluated? Reassessed? My treatment plan. So I had to answer all the depression and ADHD assessment stuff again.
Apparently my depression is slightly better and my adhd is slightly worse since starting adhd meds. Um

My auDHD brain absolutely cannot focus on writing unless I have earbuds in my ears. They don't even need to be playing anything. I prefer that, actually.
I think it's because they slightly muffle everything around me without totally blocking it out. Total silence is almost as bad for my focus as a noisy room.
My brain needs some sound, but not too much! And not music because the lyrics will be distracting and if it's instrumental, the tone might influence the tone of my writing in unintended ways.

To be a writer is to randomly find quotes that hit hard in your notes app and be incredibly confused what the context was or if it was intended for a project because wtf is this
