I made a short story based off a Shadow fanart that I liked. Hope you all like it.
——————————————————
Shadow: Ghost Rider
It was a night like any other for the red and black hedgehog. Shadow, as he was called, was walking through the streets of the city he found himself in during a particularly moonless night; the black firmament of the sky above making him almost blend into his surroundings, were it not for the red marks on his quills. His red eyes listlessly watching the surroundings around him.
After his aimless stroll through the dark alleys and the strangers, Shadow saw either having fun or getting through the day so they could simply relax in the comfort of their own homes. He entered the door, sighing as he paced the dark and lonely interior of his home. Passing by pictures of himself, Maria, Gerald, and other assorted memories captured and framed upon his walls. He washed up and went to sit on the couch to watch television, only for something else to replace what would have been his reflection. A mouthless hedgehog with green eyes and pinkish-red sclerae. His dark purple body features pale, dusty white markings on his quills and fingertips.
“I’ve come for you, Shadow.” the demonic reflection said to him. Shadow blinked and he was looking at his reflection again. It unnerved the usually stoic hedgehog to see such a sight and have it go back to normality. A while later, the light from the lamp in a hallway was flickering. Still uneasy from the sight he just experienced, he went into the hall.
“Who’s there? Show yourself,” he said, his eyes focused on the flickering light that was struggling against some force unseen but still felt. The mouthless hedgehog appeared again, his back turned. His lime green eye met Shadow’s form as he turned his head to look over his shoulder.
“I have come for you.” said the almost demonic-looking copy of Shadow. Shadow was staggered back into a greater sense of unease, but he swallowed down the proverbial lump he felt forming in his throat.
“Who and or what are you? Why have you come to me?” Shadow asked the strange hedgehog.
“I am called many things, child of Gerald and spawn of Doom, shaped by a hand attached to Arms. You can call me ‘Mephiisto’.” said the mouthless hedgehog.
“…You know about me?” Shadow asked, curious about how this ‘Mephiisto’ found out about him. To which the dark hedgehog was met with a lifeless grin by Mephiisto.
“It is my job to know things. But more importantly, I need something wiped out. And you are the perfect one to do this for me.”
Shadow smiled at the entity before him almost with a sense of rebellion. “Forget that. Do you think you can march into my home, spout out some info about me, and not even tell me what you are? Then you think you can just order me to off some guy I’ve never even met?! I’m not a bounty hunter.”
Mephiisto didn’t like this at all, and while he had no mouth, he frowned at what he had heard. And he wasn’t going to be talked to by some mortal-made science project like he was some parent. So in a flash, the mouthless hedgehog snapped his fingers and tossed him a leather jacket to Shadow.
“You are now. Take this, you’ll need to stay warm. Not that you’ll be worried about that.” Mephiisto said, laughing as he faded into the dark surrounding him and Shadow.
At that, Shadow felt…warm. But not like if he was happy or just content; but almost like a seed of rage was sparked into a roaring, raging flame. He threw the jacket on. And got outside, his body almost at a fevered temperature, as if he were being cooked from the inside out. His breathing became horse and dry; the moisture in his body and everything held with it became drier and drier. He was outside at this point, but already his body looked like it was stranded on an island for a whole fifty years. The heat alone was making his body start to crack, to the point where he saw parts of his skeleton and cranium. His eyes turning into vacant holes. His body so warm that he was laughing in delirium, almost hoping this whole experience was just imagination.
But soon, he made his way into an alley and he slipped and fell. He caught himself by his hands and knees. He looked at his almost hellish form and screamed rage fully at what he saw. For on this moonless night he became much less than a shadow; but a ghost.
Ghost the Rider.

So first off, this is a backstory for a Dragon Ball OC I was making. His name is Saru, and yes…he is a Saiyan.
So, anyways, the back story goes….
Backstory: Was sent away from a planet that was ruled by Saiyans and ended up landing on Earth. Got found as a child and was raised in the city. He was mocked relentlessly about his tail and was made to hide it. Over time, he kept getting beat up by bullies as a child all the way up to leaving his nation’s education system. When finally, he saw a peculiar warrior just like him with a monkey tail like him. That warrior was none other than Goku at the “Tenka’ichi Budôkai”. He was watching him at his workplace’s television as a young adult and realized if a person like Goku; who looked exactly like him was capable of these great feats of strength and power, then perhaps he could. So he decided to start training, even dyeing a gi in an opposite color scheme to be close to Goku in some way.
Within five years, he found he had gained much strength and his body was much more broader. Even able to somewhat copy a move Goku was taught as a kid by Master Roshi: The Kamehameha Wave!
Fast forward through many years, and the likes of Goku and the rest of the Z Fighters had battled the likes of Raditz, Vegeta (who joined them), Frieza and the Ginyu Force, androids, and a being simply known as “Cell.” Through all this, Saru simply trained and improved on his body’s physical form.
But lately, he has learned of these magical artifacts called “Dragon Balls,” which when all seven are brought together summons a magic dragon. That dragon will grant a three wishes once the Dragon Balls are brought together into one place and call upon him.
With such a prospect at hand, Saru then goes and finally quits his job and leaves to go find all seven Dragon Balls and wish for three wishes: To have power equal to that of Goku’s, to look identical to Goku, and to know all in the world.

Best self-care tips for writers!
🔹 Drink plenty of water (not just coffee or tea). 🔹 Don't compare yourself to other writers. 🔹 Take regular breaks. 🔹 Take time to read for fun. 🔹 Write something just because you enjoy it! 🔹 Set realistic, achievable goals.

This is why your characters don't feel real
Here are the top reasons why your character could be feeling flat or unreal. What every author aims for is to make palpable realistic characters who feel like someone we could actually know.
They have no internal conflict(!)
You haven’t got a clue about their backstory.
Or about what their struggle/internal conflict is rooted in.
You write them to fit the plot, instead of letting them react the way they should in the given moment (even if this leads to a huge change in the story!).
You fail to think about their dynamics & backstory with each important character in their narrative.
You don’t give them a motivation/goal going into each scene.
There are so many factors that go into making a character feel real - and you might hear advice that this is because they don’t have an interesting personality, or a unique character voice, but honestly? These are surface-level reasons. These are not going to make or break your character.
What IS going to make them interesting is internal conflict —> a struggle which we meet them in, a story of overcoming the struggle that we get invested in, and a root cause for the struggle in the character’s backstory.
Would you like to learn more about crafting realistic character who lead the plot FOR you? 🤯
You might want to give my 6-month group coaching program a go! It's designed specifically to help overcome this issue and teach you how to plot ANY story with ease. It uses a mix of writing their classes, with group coaching sessions to work specifically on YOUR project.
The first group kicks off Feb 11th, so grab your spot now!
