oftorchwood:
As with any condition humans faced these days, Lukas’ insanity was something he lived with, rather than combated on the daily. Here and there a mass slaughter was tempting, and sometimes he would find himself on the very brink of burning an entire town or city to the ground in order to appease his lust and hunger for righteous death and agony. But he always brought himself back from the brink. And that made all the difference.
At least with Athena there was a mutual regard for human ingenuity. He would have hated to have been stuck in a room with the violent one.
“You know, I was reading a fascinating article on nuclear energy just the other day. Of course the word nuclear still carries a heavy burden from sixty, fifty years ago, but it seems to be a decent source of power until humans can realize their full potential and perfect solar energy storage.”
He plucked a stapled together packet from his folder and offered it to her, staring determinedly at her hand. “Here it is, if you would like.”
She was glad they could embark on a subject of mutual interest that had nothing to do with their dramatic family or the unfortunate consequences of war, especially for the losing party.
“I wonder how Apollo feels about the mortals siphoning and storing solar energy,” She thought aloud, an unexamined idea. He probably wouldn’t think anything of it since she didn’t see any drawbacks; if anything, it made sun deities more useful.
He certainly wasn’t wrong about the lingering connotation with the word nuclear, the danger and instability. Clarke was surprised by the offer, but accepted it. “Thank you.” She perused the cover and the abstract. “Oh, I’ve come across this author. In other articles, I haven’t read any of his work myself.” She looked over at him, not yet perceiving his aversion to eye contact. “Do you mind if I keep this for a while and return it to you after I have a chance to read it?”

“Then who am I to argue.” the rare smile shown fondly in her affection for her sister as she played along with the playfulness shared between them. It had been missed greatly, not even realizing how much until she had been reunited with her presence. A reminder to visit Athena — Clarke, more often nowadays since they had been parted when stepping foot onto earth. Keep in contact, instead of going too long without one another. “Well.. beside trying to provide sanctuary for those in need, I work with wildlife rehabilitation organisations. I helped in setting up centers, organize fundraisers for money to expand on room and equipment.” every animal they had managed to rescue and set free, she was there to ensure they were safely on their way home. “In my spare time, as you will, I enjoy going to the gym. I have actually tended classes in the martial arts — though I do believe I’m at advantage.” she smirked, her body type was in no comparison of tolerance as the mortal body was. Still it was informative and Lexa was eager to learn different styles of technique. Not a necessity either, but she liked the exercising. “What about you?”
“The gym?” Clarke chuckled at the thought, but found it easy to picture. She had seen Artemis with a bow and in battle, and she had no doubt the grace transferred to the sparring arena. “Those poor mortals. You are at such an advantage.” She shook her head lightly, before a curiosity alighted in her eyes. “Have you ever let one of them take you down? Has anyone taken you down?” The idea was funny, for show or for real. She didn’t really think someone could take Artemis down, but Athena only had rudimentary knowledge about martial arts. Athena spared a polite look and thank you to the server who brought over their treats, and warmed her hands around her coffee-espresso mix. “Well, politics always keep me busy. Wish it didn’t, you know, but such is the way of the world.” The integrity of the system always required diligence to maintain, endless holes in the dam to stop up. She lifted the cup to her lips to test, but it was still too hot and set it back down. “Do you still find time to hunt?”

erica didn’t really care what anyone in the courts thought, she was a judge because it was a way for her to dole out judgement in the modern day, her reputation didn’t matter all that much. “good. so, is your client innocent or guilty? you must know. i always read my defendants’ minds so how the case goes doesn’t make much of a difference.” athena had to know whether her client was guilty or not, erica could never resist using her powers.
Athena’s expression remained on Erica, somewhat impassive, though her inquiry and statements give rise to a twinge of puzzlement. “My client is the prosecution team. I’m not with the defense.” She clarified. “But obviously, my opinion in the legal sense is that the defendant is guilty and is deserving of prison time, otherwise I would not be helping the prosecutor. It has been frustrating watching them bungle it.” Athena sighed a little thinking of it and she shook her head without thought. “But regardless of our... shall we say, special talents... I advise you to still make our team prove the case, beyond the shadow of a doubt. It is the backbone of the judicial system.” Since the case was publicized, though Athena did not care for that aspect, an odd call would not go unnoticed. “But I assure you my assistance will virtually ensure that.” Her voice dropped off into a mutter. “Unless the lead attorney has legitimate brain damage. Which may be so.” Her opinion of men was not very high, and the prosecutor had clearly not impressed her.

atomiism:
HE’S ALREADY MADE HIS DECISION before the next breath is taken . There is no either deity that he’d be more honored to attend an art festival with , them both having love of art & & it’s many forms of beauty in common . Out of all the gods & & goddesses , she understands his cherishing of the human arts most ; given this mutual interest , it only makes sense that he’ll have the most fun accompanied by the ATHENA HERSELF .
But the nudge to his pride makes chest puff indignantly as he replies . ❝ I BOW TO NO ONE . I make my own fate & & I’ve decided to go to this art festival with you . ❞
His reaction pulls the corner of her lips into a small, amused smile. Whether he’s choosing purely on his own or she had a bit of influence, the answer is the one she wanted. “Fantastic. Glad to hear it.”
She looks over his attire once more— scrubs, ID tag, the impression of comfortable shoes beneath the table though she cannot see them. Reflections of the responsibilities he’s chosen. She understands and respects that, admires it in another deity, even. The gods do not have to invest their abilities and time in helping mortals, not all of them do. She leans forward once more. “How about I meet you back here at the end of your shift? We can catch the last couple hours of the first day, maybe. When are you done?”

she always seems unimpressed with him. he wonders how far he could press her. how far it would take for him to make her crack. make her fall apart. he wants to know what it looks like when Athena recklessly gets pissed off about something. acts without think. without weighing and measuring what would be the most wise decision. “come on, don’t be so boring, we could have fun here together. it’s our element. the one thing we actually share.”
Athena rolls her eyes without meaning to, a brief gesture but one more befitting her age of appearance than her actual age. She’s been called boring before. It shouldn’t irk her, yet it still does. “I can be fun.” She hears the defensiveness in her own voice and tempers it before speaking again. “I don’t think I’d like your brand of fun. What is it you enjoy nowadays— boxing? Dog fighting?”

❝ So I’ve been told , ❞ warm chuckle at returned affection ; though he’s very secure in his own physical prowess , it’s still nice to hear it from the GODDESS OF WISDOM . Dimples appear naturally as he leans forward to hear what she has to say . It’s not very often she seeks him out & & when she does , it’s always a pleasant surprise . ( idly , he wonders where she got the inspiration for this human form ; it’s unique in a way , not like the other forms she’s taken before . younger certainly , but these days youth seems to equal beauty to humans ) .
❝ I’m honored , ❞ he says truthfully , eyebrows raised at confession until she elaborates & & expression turns to shining enthusiasm . ❝ An art festival ? You’re not talking about the ARTISPHERE are you ? Because I definitely would love to join , though … ❞ he looks over his shoulder as if authority might look down it’s nose at him before the words even come . ❝ I’m not sure if I can get the time off . ❞
The way his face lights up prompts Athena to crack a slight smile of her own, just barely. Her eyes shine with energy. She’s happy to be in the city and the art festival is extremely promising. Nothing small could draw her away from her responsibilities. On top of that, Apollo’s demeanor is a tad contagious, even for one so typically serious as herself.
“I am...” She replies in a tone that is almost a hum, almost as if to tempt him further with the prospect of indulging in the culture Chicago is offering over the next few days. The way he shirks makes her nose crinkle for a second. “To what great authority does the Lord Apollo bow nowadays?” Athena asks, leaning back in her seat. If it takes a prick to his masculinity to persuade him to join her, she is not at all above it.

“Maybe next time I’ll remember to study up on my social cues, but yes, it was supposed to be a joke” Waving off the suggestion of credentials, only a fool would turn down Athena’s help. “I’ve learned enough from watching the Trojans to know what a mistake it would be to reject your help” Picking up a few case files, she hands them to Clarke. “Feel free to look through pick one that strikes your interest or all, it’s your call”
“That would be good, yes.” Athena replied, a tad stiff. She forced herself to relax, at least marginally. The ghosting brush against insult would pass in another few moments. Athena had her pride as much as the other Olympians, and she had acted out on it in the past, but she chose to believe Adrienne meant no ill will. There were more important things. She accepted the case files and shifted her focus to them. “May I have a coffee?” She asked without looking up, lingering on the second file she opened. While they all deserved proper justice, she was more interested in the cases involving women or families.

atomiism:
He likes his job , the mundane nature of the human life he’s slipped into , the casual effect of it all — the normalcy , one could say ; though Apollo has always been EVERYTHING BUT NORMAL . Even amongst the gods & & goddesses , he holds his own unique epithet . He doesn’t see much of the others these days , save for his twin sister & & sometimes even Antheia .
So it’s sort of surprising to recognize the woman that appears during lunch , soft smile on her EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL FACE . It’s doesn’t take a genius to figure out who she is ; he’d know her anywhere . She always did have the prettiest mortal skins .
❝ Athena , ❞ a warm smile reminiscent of the sun he’s so proud of shapes his mouth as he greets the goddess . ❝ Dazzling , as always . What brings you to my humble hospital ? ❞
“Charming, as always.” She parrots at the compliment, though not to his level of warmth. No one can quite match Apollo in that respect. Nor does she take the tidbit of flattery to heart. Athena is not exempt from pride or vanity, like most other gods, but her mind and skills are the wellspring of her ego more than whatever face she chooses to wear.
His presence as a healer at this place is unsurprising. Athena herself has spent time working in medicine, sometimes directly and sometimes in management. She imagines Apollo would find upper management an absolute bore. Direct involvement with the mortals in a fast-paced, intellectual environment appears to suit him well.
“I wanted to see you.” A simple answer. It feels obvious to Athena as she is there, seeing him, though there’s more. “There’s a big art festival going on downtown over the next few days, if you don’t know. I’m in town for it. Care to join me?” She always likes to check in with local deities, but Apollo is not just any deity. He’s her peer, and the craft of art is one area they have in common.

Starter for Apollo ( @atomiism )
She caught him at lunch, in the cafeteria of the hospital. Athena was not stuck up about mortal food, but she wasn’t sure how anyone could stomach the grub served that day. She slid into the seat across from him. “Hello, Apollo.” She caught sight of his ID tag. “Ray Palmer. Recognize me?”

Hecate had been reading a book in the back of her shop one of her dogs curled up at her feet. The sound of her chimes caused the black pit bull to go inspect who had entered. By the shift in energy, Hecate could already tell it was a god or goddess. Which one would stop by, she didn’t know. As she walked into the front of her shop she saw the blonde and raised an eyebrow, “How can I help you?”
“Hello there, puppy.” Athena murmured as a pit bull emerged from the back of the shop. It didn’t matter how big or old a dog was, they were all puppies to her. She bent at the knee to offer the back of her hand for sniffing. “Is your mistress around?” She asked in the same quiet, crooning voice, turning her hand over to pet the dog instead. Precious. Athena looked up at the question, and relented her attention to the dog as she rose back to standing. Her eyes drank in Hecate’s lovely modern appearance. “Hello, Hecate.” She gave a small smile, less business than pleasure. “I’m just in Salem for a few days and wanted to stop by.”

She mulls over the thought, eyes drifting skyward before bringing Clarke back into focus. “How much do you know about law?” It’s not a no, far from it as Adrienne steps past Clarke to a small and steadily growing pile of cases shifting through till she finds a rather difficult one, “I’ve been pulling all-nighters trying to get this done and a lot of lawyers in the firm have been traveling to different cities so I’m spread a little thin here”
Athena’s mouth fell open in shock at the question. “Is that meant to be a joke?” There was a time she was the law. She was the champion of democracy, true democracy. Not despotism or aristocracy dressed up as democracy. Perhaps the young goddess truly was exhausted. Athena could sympathize with that, at least. “If you must know, I’ve practiced law in all fifty states since the nation’s conception, and in several other countries. Primarily Western.” Her brows rose pointedly at Adrienne. “I can list my credentials more thoroughly if you wish.”

Meeting her sister’s eyes once more she was grateful to see the understanding in those blues. Every disagreement that had been shared was long in the past. Forgotten about as they settled into their new lives of this modern age. Time had changed drastically, along with them. To fit into this new life, they had to adept very much like the mortals had. Controlling the gifts of the world, no longer held it’s strength as when they had been born centuries ago. Lexa followed after the other goddess, casting curious glances around the museum as they went. Knowing some of her sister’s taste, she could understand why the blonde had come here. “Eating such treats is not exactly a necessity.” she teased her sister, though she wouldn’t decline the offer. Lexa had come to take a liking towards some of the food that was consumed these days. Following suit, she took a seat at the table Clarke had picked out and glanced the menu over. Much was offered, but her eye caught something in particular. “The red velvet cake slice..”
“No, not a necessity.” Clarke replied, ease in her voice as they walked. “That’s why it’s called a treat, Lexa.” It would be no ambrosia, but mortal food tasted good enough. The new name felt strange on her tongue, but she knew after a small period of time she would get used to it. Given time, one could get used to just about anything. Her eyes remained on her fellow goddess as she perused the menu. The choice surprised Clarke somewhat, only because she had no idea what Lexa’s tastes might be like nowadays. Clarke leaned forward over the table, resting on her elbows, after their order was placed. “So. Tell me about your life now. What have you been up to lately?” Even if there was a business matter to discuss, Clarke felt they could at least catch up first.

he wants to now that she said that. drag out the place. maybe boast about some of his victories, just to reinstate the surge of confidence he had felt with the rush of blood and adrenaline due to the crowd. he wants incite some anger in her. but she’s pushing it aside. and that agitates him, kills his opportunity. and he convinces himself she did it on purpose. “the rehash is only done when it suits you.” he says with some bitterness. although perhaps it’s better that way. rehashing old battles could lead to other things, their father for instance. and he doesn’t like that being dragged out. especially not with Athena.
She sighs but doesn’t engage him further on the subject. She can’t tell if he is actually pissed at her or if it’s just something natural within him sparking up. Either way, there is no wisdom in arguing over matters they cannot change. The facts are the facts. Athena isn’t trying to fight with him. She can’t be bothered to expend the energy for it. “Are you done now, or was there something else?” She considers trying to smooth things over between them. It’s a thought she’s debated the worth of for quite some time. She is curious about his life nowadays, but she isn’t sure the attempt to be friendlier with Ares would pan out with any success. It could crash and burn in a matter of seconds, leaving them worse than before.
