i saw a clip of this random (male) streamer saying that he is currently reading a sci fi book but that he has problems visualizing something based on a text description so he plugs the description into an AI generator to see what it looks like bc he cant visualize it himself. and it just instantly filled me with feelings of disgust and contempt. i dont have an argument as to how this is morally wrong, i just think its deeply embarrassing and i would have kept it to myself

if you need fewer than 8 hrs of sleep keep that shit to yourself. or do one better and simply lie and say that 8+ hrs of sleep is necessary for you. if you’re out here loudly bragging about ur 4 hour sleep maximum i consider you an oppressor. best case scenario is people clap for you and feel jealous. worst case scenario you signal to the capitalist dogs that we should all try to be like you. the risk is too great and the reward too little
#oh I mean#totally okay to discuss how much sleep you need in spaces that don't impact how employers and scummy politicians#treat people who need much more sleep than that#it's just.... eeeeh#I would appreciate if people were more mindful of the setting of convos like that

I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.
But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.
Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.
Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.
Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.
Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.
Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.
Your writing is yours. Take control of it.
It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.

why are dudes in fanfic always getting hit with freight train orgasms. why not an orient express orgasm, classy and romantic. where are the shinkansen train orgasms? his orgasm hit him like the TGV atlantique breaking the passenger rail speed record. like the shanghai maglev, his orgasm was a feat of engineering but something of a commercial disappointment.

On April 16th 2025 the US federal government has proposed to change the interpretation of the endangered species act so that it no longer protects habitat.
This is open for public comment until the end of May 19th. Please comment and make your voice heard.
Wildlife need their habitat. If the ESA redefines harm so that habitat is no longer protected, the implications for wildlife would be catastrophic.

Don't mind me being nitpicky about the distinction betwen anhedonia (the symptom of depression) and Anhedonia TM because I'm aware the latter is niche af, but alas, that also means it's severely under-researched and professionals aren't nearly as likely to take you seriously when you tell them that no, managing your depression and having genuinely positive thoughts still doesn't make you more capable of experiencing positive emotions.
One of the main differences, I believe is, that with the symptom of depression, your expectations of emotional rewards are sometimes skewed (read: sometimes, you just gotta Do The Thing and you end up being rewarded with positve emotions you were not expecting)
Now, with Anhedonia TM (the separate condition), however - especially when you first fall ill - you engage in an activity fully expecting your usual emotional reward from it, but in the end, all you get out of it is more numbness and no matter how often you try again, the result does not change.
(And for many, that experience is what leads to depression in addition to the mess that is Anhedonia TM).
So, in order to cope with the latter and improve your quality of life regardless, it's of paramount importance to, on the one hand, manage your expectations yet, on the other hand, seek out 'rewards' not tied to your ability (rather, your inability) to experience joy.

Not to rain on anyone's parade as these are wonderful tips indeed. Just, 'hard' anhedonia (the state that is independent from depression) doesn't go away with that (I would know, having been completely anhedonic since summer 2012), so for anyone else dealing with that, slight caveat to maintain a realistic set of expectations.
Your ability to experience positive emotions may not return from this, but you may still end up in a much better mood, keep depression at bay (which people with 'hard' anhedonia are especially susceptible to), and provide you with fulfilment and stimulation that may not be tied to positive emotions, but still as real.
Curiosity, for instance, has very much kept me alive and interested in various subjects even without my brain giving me a proper emotional reward.
So, absolutely try these out, see what improves your mood, what sparks your curiosity, but don't ever blame yourself if your positive emotions don't return from this because it's far from your fault your reward system does not operate as it should and needs stronger 'incentives' (and a thorough investigation of what actually caused it) to do so again.
'Hard' anhedonia (as in, anhedonia that is not a symptom of depression and exists independently from it) can have many different causes. Thus far, I've spoken to and read about people whose anhedonia was caused by trauma, adverse reactions to meds that did not go away when they stopped taking them, gut infections, covid, even. I think mine was caused by a hormonal condition that was only diagnosed post-puberty and I'm certain there are plenty of other possible causes I have not listed here.

if you are lost in the rut, i am begging you to read this essay by Sasha Chapin suggesting what, essentially, my take, are potential jump-starts back into living life in real time. like actually experiencing experiences
do it now! don’t lose months, years, or decades! there is a life beyond doomscrolling, and it’s finite (sorry. sorry. i know okay)

If you're in the US military or National Guard, and are given an illegal or unconstitutional order, the GI Rights hotline (1-877-447-4487) is there to help give you the support you need to do the right thing by refusing it. It would be good to think about this now before it becomes a live issue for you and it would be smart of you to memorize that number.

There is something so insidious and gross about the dumbing down and cutesfying of language.
“Unalive” “grape” “sewer slide”- no.
If you’re using a word like grape for anything other than the fruit, actually grow up.
Dead. Murder. Rape. Suicide.
These are serious topics. They aren’t cute. Talk about them seriously and in an adult manner.
