I have never been on the same page as fandom’s clear communication fetishists and I never will be. I love miscommunication, concealment, pigheadedness, and lies. I think characters should talk around what they have to say and ignore each other and impute needs and beliefs onto others that have nothing to do with those other people and everything to do with maintenance of the ego. A little clear communication is fine but it should come at the end and be earned by repeated instances of snobbery, tomfoolery, self righteousness, or blockheadedness. If you decide you hate a character just because that character isn’t communicating in the way a therapist might coach them to, well consider that people don’t actually talk like that at all and that most of us get things wrong many times before we inch our way out of the labyrinthine darkness of our own heads.

“He would not fucking say that” is a Schrodinger’s phrase when it comes to Batman. There is probably Batman run where he would say that. There is also probably a run where Batman would kill the other Batman for saying that.

i like nyx as a laura kinney fan, i like the closure for the academy x characters, and i think the character writing has some great moments. but i just cannot escape this discomfort.
the mutant metaphor is and was always kind of a gauche comparison, reframing a vague understanding of civil rights discourse into a superhero phenomena for white people. maybe its just the more i actually learn about the world the less i can stomach the filtration of real-world discourses into the superhero mold.
and nyx sits at the center of that in this complicated place where its entire point is to draw real-world liberational discourses into the xmen. it just highlights how honestly kind of insulting it can be to do things like having characters of colour be the mouthpieces of fictional racism against white people i.e. kamala's cousin shouting at sophie cuckoo (which x-ceptional xmen did too, having random unnamed Black characters be the ones being anti-mutant) and then to go on and directly talk about mutants in the language of racist oppression. you end up with the well-intentioned but ultimately just flat use of the mutant metaphor like... redirecting real-world racial discourses into this fictional lens that revolves predominantly around white characters experiencing oppression.
and i'm not the one who can say definitively "this use of the metaphor is kind of insulting" but i am feeling this constant discomfort watching sophie cuckoo experience fictional white people racism.
which leaves me in this weird place where i have these deep attachments to characters whose premise leaves them at the intersection of too real but not real enough. stories that lean into the fantastical aspects like the inhumans vs xmen event end up feeling sour because of the lingering legacy of real-world oppression that defines the xmen, but stories that actually pull directly from the real-world experiences of oppressed people like nyx can trip into feeling like a too-cheap heavy-handed use of the metaphor. and i think this is just the thing that xmen as a whole and its fans have to balance.

also i love damian's new robin suit, the personalization implies so much about him taking ownership of the role rather than trying to live up to it

oh this is so juicy, juxtaposing damian's character growth--growing beyond his traumatic childhood and his parents' expectations into someone with his own aspirations and understanding of the world--with bruce's stagnation, his neverending crusade and constant paranoia. im clapping like a seal rn this is such satisfying drama
