Shepherd Fic Final Chapter is Here!!!
and with that, she's posted. i spent like 8 hours yesterday, a full fucking work day, on this chapter and i'm really happy with it. it's the reunion we deserved between ravyn and elspeth, both emotionally and physically. i do believe the dirty talk and banter in this chapter is some of my best work. 4700 words, which doubled the word count of the entire fic! let me know what y'all think <3
A/N: the smut happens after the line break, so if that's not your thing you can end the chapter there!

OKAY SHE'S FINISHED. I'm gonna sleep on it and look it over in the morning, but look for the posting tomorrow! 4700 words, which is longer than the first four chapters combined LMAO
Shepherd Fic update
WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS. I hated what I first wrote and had to take a break from it. But I came back to it today and put it through a major rehaul. Final chapter coming soon...

It is my day off. I had leftover pizza for breakfast and went on a pumpkin coffee run with my partner. I finished reading my latest book and am now sitting down to start the final chapter of my fic while they play their video game beside me. Our pup sprawls between us resting her head on my leg.
Life is made up of moments. These are the moments.
It is Saturday.
I am reading in a thrifted chair. My empty mug of coffee is asking to be filled again. The smell of bacon and eggs and toast waft from the kitchen where my husband is diligently making our late breakfast. Our two dogs lounge lazily nearby, in case their clean up services are required. We having nothing planned.
It is Saturday.
I am happy.

Best New Fantasy Series
I read the first book of this series a year ago, then reread it a couple days ago to prepare for the second book, which I read yesterday. Let me tell you, folks, this series is a must read.
You follow Kaelin, a young boy in the Bardic Isles, a fantasy world where music is the magic system, as well as a huge part of the social and political order.
Kaelin is a self-taught flutist with a special gift who is afraid to play in front of anyone because of a tragedy he experienced in the past. But through a series of events, he ends up following one of the Masters of Music, getting the training he so desperately needs.
The first book focuses on their relationship, between mentor and student. In the second book, Kaelin spends time with each of the other Masters of Music, as well as the Bards that serve under them, which provides a much larger ensemble cast.
Now, what makes these books magic are the characters. You will fall in love with Kaelin, sweet, kind, beautiful boy, who also has one of the funniest mouths on him. The HUMOR in this book is so clever. The way he interacts with all the various Bards who visit, as well as the Masters, is delightful.
Additionally, it feels like you go on an emotional, healing, and ethical journey right alongside Kaelin. You can tell the author is a lifelong teacher, because the way lessons are taught to both Kaelin and the adults, are so authentic and impactful. I was moved to tears by the emotional moments constantly, and then a page later I would be laughing out loud.
The world that Himeda created is one I want transport myself to immediately. I'm invested in the plot, but more than anything my heart has been stolen by the world and its characters.
Musicians and non-musicians alike will get their breath taken away by these books. These books are wise, the heavy topics are handled with utmost care, and you can feel the love bled into every page. The author is 72 and has spent her whole life dreaming up this series and it really really shows.
If you take a chance on a book/series this week, please let it be this one!!!
It's on Kindle Unlimited too!

Finished The Wicked King and I’m sad because I want to be on the Jude and Cardan train… and it’s not like they’re bad. They definitely have chemistry. But, I’m just struggling to feel attached to their characters at all. I dunno, it just feels like all the characters are kept at an arms length from us the reader.
Intrigued by the plot and the scheming though!

My thoughts on A Study in Drowning
So, I feel bad that I didn't love this book. The prose was beautiful and the idea really cool. I felt like the ending could have been amazing and really satisfying, but I just felt like the execution of the buildup failed for me. I ended up feeling like the message was being banged over my head, and it felt rushed after the rest of the book dragged and we were given nothing.
Also, a couple of pain points (SPOILERS BEWARE): 1. The main couple did have some chemistry but was too insta-love for me. Didn’t love the “I don’t believe you (hint: you're delusional), but I’ll support you” attitude of MMC. Didn't love the RACISM from the FMC in the first part of the book and then her "apology" later. 3. I’m sorry, why are we getting a first kiss, then immediate sex, no foreplay, just put it in???? Especially when Effy is a virgin! Like, I get quickies if you've already had sex before with the person, but like you barely just had your first kiss with the man, and we're gonna go straight to shoving it in?? This man pulled a Colin Bridgerton, like can we have some carriage scene finger work at least? 4. Also, speaking of the sex scene, the whole setup made me angry. So, let me get this right. The storm is going nuts, we need to leave this dangerous house with our stolen evidence, and get away from the creepy scary man, oh BUT WAIT. first let’s have uncomfortable sex, then go to sleep, then when we wake up and the storm literally is gonna kill us, let’s go back up to the scary house with the man who pointed his gun at us to get the evidence we conveniently forgot so that we can get obviously caught and the third act conflict and plot twist can be revealed.
#a gentleman always invests in foreplay#themes that are beaten over my head only make it physically impactful not emotionally#I give this 2 stars for the prose and the vibes#a study in drowning#ava reid
