He sucked as a werewolf. His dad really shouldn’t have triggered his transformation. He couldn’t do anything, and only Scott had ever gotten his healing to work right. Eli looked down, avoiding her face as his hair got in his eyes to hide away.

“It’s not the creature.“

           “  then  what  is  it?  you  really  should  be  healing  right  now.  ”  her  brows  furrow  in  concern,  dark  hues  staring  at  the  cuts  and  bruises  on  his  hand.  she  wasn’t  too  aware  of  a  werewolf’s  inability  to  heal  if  they  did  not  fully  give  in  to  their  own  instinct.  she  only  really  understood  it  in  the  context  of  her  former  classmates  at  the  salvatore  school  and  college.  “  it’s  okay,  i  just  want  to  help.  ”

“Ugh. So many kinds of monsters,” Eli groaned. He flexed and clenched his hand, knowing it would probably ache, and felt his face warm in embarrassment. The cuts she was probably studying, the bruising, wasn’t about to go away anything soon. “Uh - yeah? Yeah, totally healing, it’s fine.”

          “  you  get  used  to  it.  ”  josie  replies  with  the  only  comforting  smile  that  she  could  muster.  truthfully,  she  was  uneasy  about  the  entire  situation:  seeing  eli  get  attacked  in  that  manner  was  a  huge  red  flag  on  what  to  look  out  for.  “  that’s  weird,  because  it  doesn’t  actually  look  like  it’s  healing.  do  you  need  help  triggering  the  process?  i  hope  that  creature  doesn’t  have  an  ability  to  inhibit  your  body’s  defence,  that  would  be  really  bad.  ”

her eyebrows, which were furrowed in confusion, gradually smoothen out. bella smiles hesitantly. josie’s words and actions were comforting, and she found herself to be oddly reassured albeit it felt like her world was shifting again. not the best feeling for someone who thought they left a majority of the supernatural world behind. “so … there’s more to the supernatural world than just vampires and shapeshifters? what else exists?” but what she really wants to ask is: and why does the supernatural world keep finding me when i try so hard to leave it behind? but she doesn’t say that. instead, she stares at josie expectantly and waits. she’s not sure how much her friend knows, but she trusts her to be the one to tell bella the truth. better hearing it from josie than being attacked by some sort of alien the next day.

                josie  understands  that  some  people  can  lay  it  on  thick:  proof  of  the  supernatural  in  the  most  dire  of  situations.  a  forceful  key  unlocking  the  truth  of  a  wider,  richer  world  that  the  majority  of  humans  are  simply  oblivious  to.  she  doesn't  want  to  patronise  bella  as  she  has  seen  others  do  to  the  unaware.  instead,  she  offers  her  sincerest  smile  and  squeezes  her  linked  arm.  “  yes,  actually.  there’s  a  lot  more  but  i  don’t  think  it  could  be  covered  all  in  one  day.  i  know  it’s  scary  to  realise  that  there’s  way  more  out  there  than  what  you  initially  thought,  but  i  think  it’s  better  to  be  in  the  know.  ”  the  siphon  finds  herself  frowning  for  a  moment  at  the  mention  of  shapeshifters.  did  she  mean  werewolves?  maybe  bella  knew  more  than  josie  suspected,  but  she  was  there  to  help.  “  is  there  anything  in  particular  that  you  would  like  to  ask?  ”

                   the  statement  elicits  a  chuckle  from  josie.  she’s  more  than  aware  of  how  strange  everything  seems  when  a  person  is  on  the  outside  looking  in  with  absolutely  zero  context.  “  you’re  not  the  first  person  to  say  that,  bella,  and  i’m  pretty  sure  that  you  won’t  be  the  last.  ”   her  smile  softens  as  she  reaches  out  an  arm  to  the  woman.  “  but  i’m  here  to  help  it  make  sense  in  any  way  that  i  can.  i’m  sure  i  can  handle  any  questions  you  want  to  throw  at  me.  i’m  more  than  aware  that  it  can  get  overwhelming  so  just  take  it  one  step  at  a  time,  okay?  ”

          “  that’s  not  always  true  and  you  know  it.  ”  josie  replies  with  the  smallest  of  smiles.  things  were  different  now,  the  twins  were  older  and  far  more  mature.  they  had  the  capability  to  solve  their  own  issues  without  leaning  too  hard  on  one  another  but  knew  they  had  each  other’s  backs.  unconditionally.  lizzie  was  learning  more  about  her  still  relatively  new  vampiric  power  under  tutelage  of  someone  that  knew  how  to  guide  her.  josie  would  always  be  concerned,  but  was  aware  that  if  the  roles  were  reversed  that lizzie  would  do  the  same  for  her.  “  you  break  the  mold  and  set  an  example  for  others.  you  have  amazing  leadership  qualities.  ”  she’s  grinning  now.

          “  it  does  feel  good.  i  think  we’re  doing  more  than  okay  given  the  circumstances.  things  are  looking  up,  we  should  seize  the  opportunity  to  have  happiness  when  it’s  offered.  ”  the  year  was  more  than  messy,  with  josie  combatting  her  own  darkness  and  lizzie  transitioning:  but  they  were  nothing  if  not  extremely  adaptable.  “  yeah,  you  are.  ”  her  smile  is  somewhat  melancholic  as  she  reaches  out  to  take  her  twin’s  hand.  “  maybe  not  right  away,  but  i  think  i’m  on  the  right  track.  ”

"well.  .  .you  were  always  the  optimistic  one  of  the  pair."  a  balance.  the  ying  to  her  yang  and  whatever  else  she  can  conjure  back  as  a  metaphor  for  josie.  things  are  good  now,  even  if  they  don't  talk  as  much  as  they  used  to  and  there  is  some  damage  that  still  needs  healing.  but  lizzie  is  enjoying  herself  for  once,  rebuilding  an  old  legacy  is  rare,  one  they  barely  knew  but  it  felt  good,  for  once  be  someone  who  is  seen  under  a  good  light  and  not  just  as  a  high  school  bitch.

 "but.  .  .I  have  the  same  feeling  too.  this  feels  good,  right?  some  peace  of  mind."  after  a  messy  year  and  the  prison  world,  lizzie  is  happy  that  both  of  them  got  to  be  their  best  selves.  being  a  heretic  suited  her  more  than  anything  else.  "i'm  where  i  belong  now."  a  short  pause,  as  eyes  follow  back  to  josie,  holding  out  her  hand.  "but  are  you?  where  you  belong?"
