My fandom has recently become a very unpleasant environment. It's a very small fandom, the people involved are very active and invasive, and there's no effective way of avoiding or ignoring them. Honestly, I kind of just want to leave the fandom entirely at this point. The problem is that I still love the source material with all my heart and I'm finding it hard to let go, even knowing it's for the best. Any advice?

This might be a situation where you let go of the fandom, but not the canon. Loving something doesn't mean you have to love everything that goes with it.

If the fans on tumblr or on AO3 are horrible to you, leave them behind. Try finding fans on twitter or tiktok or facebook. Post your stories to FFN or Wattpad or AFF or Dreamwidth.

If you're feeling strong and brave enough, you can always make a post explaining how you feel. You might find others who feel the same way. I'd suggest turning off anons before you do, though.

You can still love the source material with your whole heart, even if you're not a part of the fandom that goes along with it. 💕

I swear you are a writing FIEND though!  Your output is ENORMOUS!!   And I’m so glad you responded but I was totally stressing because I hit the button and realized I didn’t say PLEASE!! I’m being Tumblr incompetent I didn’t know how to get another post connected to say that.  Yay!  I got caught up!  I felt like such a goof!!  And thank you for even considering it.  Because you do write so many wonderful and lovely things, and even if they aren’t in the Pair and Repair verse, I enjoy the other things you write.  I wanted to say that too. And thank you. I just wanted you to know I was thinking about Deke the couch the other day. And how much I appreciated the image. I was chortling.... Okay, I’m going to stop babbling and let you get back to writing like you do so well. Thank you for considering and letting me know it’s still on the list....I hope you have a great week and Imma still going to be here, happily thankful for whatever you choose to post and share with us.

I just saw in the notes of your Bangel fic that you started writing it 20 years ago - wow! How old were you when you got into the Buffy fandom? I’m just now starting and being in the same fandom for twenty years sounds crazy to me. Hope to read more from you soon!

I wrote “Twice in a Lifetime” in my 30s, so now I’m older than dirt as the youn’s on Twitter didn’t hesitate to tell me last summer.  Heaven forfend I try to learn a new platform.  I’m liable to make a fool of myself in trying to answer here too.  But, ya gotta try, otherwise WTH.  And I started in Season 3 of the show, back in 1999. And it’s interesting that you say that. About being around for twenty years.  Do you know that the ORIGINAL Buffy posting board from the WB network created for the show is still in existence. It’s limping along, but there is still a wee band of buggered few fans, me being one of them, that keeps the lights on, just so that there is a place for those of us that knew how magical it was can come back. When the show switched from the WB to UPB, our Board Dad got the code from the website masters who were contracted with the WB and he’s had it ever since.  We’ve been self funded since what?  2003?  Same place, same code, same posting board. Since the show started in 1998. Slightly different URL because the WB owned that actual addy.

It’s old, and crotchety as holy hell.  www.thebronzealternative.com  You’re welcome to stop by.  We even have our own Bezoar. Every board needs a Bezoar.  But we have people that go all the way back to the beginning like me.  It’s got a password on it, but if you can read, you can get past it and into the board.  Board Dad had to put one on because we were getting spammed by bots years ago.  There are a lot of other places to go now, but there was no place like the Bronze.  People made friends, they got married, they made babies, they died. All because of this little show.  So glad you discovered it!  It certainly changed my life and I hope you liked my story.  I did have a sequel started called Lightning Strikes Twice about Katie and Keith’s adventures in Boston and Buffy and Angel’s life in Sunnydale - But life got in the way.  I started a business, had a baby, got divorced.  So maybe, I’ll go back to it.  Twenty years is a long time to pick up a story, but never say never.

I really love this... Especially that characters will tell you things that you didn’t know were there.  They will tell you secrets, if you are willing to listen.  One of my favorite examples of this was Kazander from the Dragon Token series from Melanie Rawn.  He just wouldn’t leave her alone, practically writing himself.  I remember reading one of her interviews, that he became one of her favorites, and he was certainly one of mine. 

why you should keep writing your story

because it’s a puzzle no one else will ever arrange the same way as you.

because there are ideas that simply won’t come to you until you write down the wrong words.

because all the bad scenes are the bones of the wonderful scenes.

because someone will love it: someone will read it once, and twice, and thrice; someone will ramble to you about the complexity of it; someone will doodle your characters out of love; someone will find it in exactly what they were looking for with or without knowing it.

because they have things to say, your characters. they’ve told you all those secrets and they have more to tell you, if you will listen.

because you love it even when you don’t; even when it drives you mad or when it accidentally turns into apathy; even when you think you’re doing it all wrong; you love it, and it loves you back.

because you can get a treasure even from things that go wrong; because if a story crumbles down you can build a shinier one on the same spot; because you won’t know where it will take you until it takes you there.

OMG your sister is so wrong.  Fanfic is good for the soul.  Does she not know how many BILLIONS of DOLLARS fanfic has generated?  I mean think about how many of today’s creative artists started out in fanfic?  Every second generation property was a first a fanfic.  Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon - ALL fanboys!  HELL, What do you think SHAKESPEARE is??  It’s GREEK Fanfiction!!  The retelling of an old tale by a fan in a new way with beloved characters. DISNEY is the EPITOME of Fanfiction.  Why do you think so many writers and producers are closet supporters of fanfiction?  Because they got started as fan fiction writers themselves.  They know that their next talent is going to come from the next geek. And they will chortle just as as loudly lurking on Twitter or some board when they read a good line that they aren’t supposed to be looking at.  And you know they do because when it shows up in the show or book, it’s too much of a coinkidink - but they can’t admit it because the attorneys will go ballistic. Best fangirl moment I ever had was when Doug Petrie hauled me out of the American Legion hall into the quiet because he wanted to hear the plot of my fanfic novel.  Biggest swoon worthy moment ever - more than meeting any celeb ever.  That a Buffy writer wanted to hear about the plot of the novel that his work helped inspired in me. Talk about plotzing all over the place.      The only people who don’t support fanfiction are the grubby money people - the attorneys, the publishers, and the insecure artists who have limited ideas.  If you are a real artist, you understand what Joss Whedon said about art - it’s your kid.  It grows up and talks back to you.  (You can’t contain it, so don’t try, let it go and see what it becomes, it’s often greater than you ever thought possible - and that’s true artist speak.)  Anyone who sees to restrict art, doesn’t truly understand its magic.
