Actually you know what quote gets me every single time?
When Peter confronts his “mother” (quotes because he’s really reliving a memory) and he tells her that he’s dead because of her
and she shakes her head and tells him:
“I don’t even know that you’re dead.”
Because she doesn’t! No one does! His body is trapped at the bottom of the lake and no one knows he’s there. No one knows he’s dead. They all think that he looted the place and ran off.
And his family wasn’t good to him. His mother wasn’t good. But at least they could have recognized their deeds and regretted their actions in the face of his loss. His death could have made her think about all the pain she put him through, made her feel guilty for it all, make her think about how much she loves him and how she should have showed that to him instead.
But it doesn’t.
Because no one knows he’s even dead.

It's late at night and I'm thinking about haunting of hill house and it's "i love you completely and you love me the same, the rest is confetti" and haunting of bly manor and it's "it's you, it's me, it's us".

When I finished watching the Haunting of Bly Manor, I wasn’t frightened of a single thing anymore, not the lady in the lake, none of the ghosts, no shadows in mirrors or anything. Somehow every scary thing had turned into something understandable, everything and everyone had a reason for doing what they did, you saw that they felt love and pain and insecurity, just like you. And that took the horror away. It was like fear had turned into love, and peace. And that was beautiful. One of the things I loved about that series.

there is something SO painful and absolutely shattering to me about the concept of haunting and haunted houses being manifestations of trauma.

Grief is the ghost of love...
Tumblr media
"Most times, a ghost is a wish."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
""I loved you completely, and you loved me the same," she said, "that's all." And this was the point I wanted the most to make. That at the end of our life, if we can say this about each other, the rest doesn't matter. It’s the love that stays."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I'm in the hallway again, I'm in the hallway. The radio's playing my favorite song. Leave the lights on. Keep talking. I'll keep walking toward the sound of your voice."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"you can’t take loved away. time and death and mistakes take people from you, but nothing and no one can take back that love... everything changes irreversibly with every second that passes, but nothing and no one can change the fact that i was loved and i loved back... you can’t take it away from me. i was loved. i was loved."
Tumblr media
"At the root of every ghost, a yearning. A tug, in which a living person reaches so fervently toward something absent, that the absence becomes bodied. As anyone who has known loss understands full well, lack is not in fact, an absence at all. It is a presence. A person we love dies, or leaves, or changes, and a gap forms. It takes on their shape. Mimics their movement. Echoes their voice like a mockingbird. We feel this gap take up space, filling every place our lost one once was, and now isn’t. It reflects in mirrors. Flickers in candle flames. A phantom."

watching a new mike flanagan really is like this place has everything: a complicated family dynamic, a could’ve been great love dashed by human failing, meditations on life in the face of death, a classic “are these ghosts real or are they just in my head/does it matter if they’re real to you?”, and, perhaps most importantly, a truly spooky house with wild shit going on in the basement.

The wrong kind of love can fuck you up. Follow you. Make you do some really stupid shit. And those two, believe me, that was the wrong kind of love.

you know when i start crying my eyes out without fail every time i watch bly manor? when flora’s about to be drowned by the lady in the lake and rebecca reaches out in desperation to do whatever she can to protect that little girl, even if it’s just to protect her from the horror of what she herself had to experience, if not to save her from it altogether. she was willing to drown a second time for that little girl after her so-called lover and protector let her do it all on her own and that gets me every time

Just finished watching "The Haunting of Bly Manor " and of course my favourite lines were - But the lady in the lake was different now . It was Dani . And Dani would never.
And I thought it would've been really great if Jamie had said - it was "her Dani and her Dani would never " but just now I realised that - it's the whole point , Jaime would never confuse love with possession and nor would Dani. They would never become Peter Quint .

The fact that what started The Haunting Of Bly Manor was Viola Lloyd and all her anger and her spite and her selfishness and her possessiveness mistaken for manifestations of love.
Viola, who was unwilling to allow her disease to take away her life so stubbornly to the point that death stopped coming to her house.
When she believed her death imminent in the near future, she made her husband vow, not to move on or to find happiness, but to store away her most valued possessions - and therefore herself -  and give them only to their daughter when she came of age. She remained trapped with those possessions within a trunk in the attic until the day it was opened, not by her daughter, but by her sister, who became her first victim. She was abandoned by her family for her sin, and from that point forward her rage and her belief in the unfairness of her circumstance trapped not only her but all those who died on the grounds of Bly.
The fact that Peter Quint died taken by the lady in the lake and dragged Rebecca down with him and that every aspect of their relationship was based on possession.
The fact that Dani faced the same choice but didn't even consider for one second putting Jamie's life at risk. The fact that Jamie wanted to go down with her, but Dani refused to do so. The fact that every aspect of their relationship was based on love.
And the fact that that is what broke the curse.
"People do, don't they? Mix up love and possession?" "Yeah." "I don't think that should be possible."

Something about Jamie telling Dani in her moonflower speech that beauty lies in mortality and that everyone is meant to die and that death is beautiful, and then years later after she knows Dani a lot more and has lived a life with her, Dani dies and Jamie can't take it and tries to jump into the lake to drown and be with her in death
Something about Jamie saying that we leave more life behind to take our place and there's the scene with the kids all grown up with the friends and loved ones they made after the events of the show, lives and connections that wouldn't have happened had Dani not sacrificed herself for those lives to take her place
