Why does Keystone XL so controversial? Here’s what you need to know!
Run from Alberta and ended it’s relation with TC Energy
What is Keystone XL?
Keystone XL is a 2010-commissioned oil pipeline system in Canada and United States. Owned by TC Energy. The pipeline runs from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in Alberta connects to refineries in Illinois and Texas, as well as oil tank farms and a distribution center in Cushing, Oklahoma. The 830,000 barrels of Alberta tar sands oil were planned to be transported daily to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast. From the refineries, the oil would primarily be shipped abroad rather than to American petrol stations.
Keystone XL route:
How did the Keystone XL started?
On March 2010 The National Energy Board approves TransCanada's application for Keystone XL, though the OK comes with 22 conditions regarding safety, environmental protection and landowner rights.
Later on August 26, 2011 The State Department said that the pipeline would have a limited environmental impact.
Soon after the Keystone XL was confirmed, many protesters stage a two-week campaign of civil disobedience at the White House to speak out against Keystone XL. Police arrest approximately 1,000 people.
Then On September 26, 2011 At a demonstration on Parliament Hill, police arrest 117 of 400 protesters.
Then President Barack Obama vetoes the bill of the project on 2015 and The Obama administration rejects TransCanada's application to build the Keystone XL pipeline.
On May 26, 2016 After Donald Trump is elected he then said that he would approve Keystone XL if elected, a pledge he repeats several times during the campaign.
Trump continued the Keystone XL project that was stopped during during Obama's tenure.
A majority of Americans think the US government should approve the building of Keystone XL pipeline. While 29% think it should not. Many people start a protest and made online demonstrations by making websites to criticize Trump’s move. Unfortunately Trump blocked any websites criticizing him and close both of his ears from any type of demonstration.
On November 3rd, 2020 Joe Biden is elected to be the president of United States of America. He signed the “executive order” to revoke the Keystone XL project which is granted by TC Energy(TransCanada) and so the Keystone project stopped on June 2021. It was stopped by TC Energy when it was completed just over 90 miles of a pipeline supposed to extend across 1,200 miles.
Positive and negative impact from Keystone XL project
Positive impact:
If the project successful it can increase the country’s economy
Help decrease the number of homeless by giving them the opportunity to get a job in the project
Negative impact :
Cause pollution for many places
Indian’s holy land are invaded to build the Keystone XL project
Basically the project is profitable for US and harmful for the rest of the world.
What I think about Keystone XL
I think we can do better things to boost the country's economy and create more jobs, for example by making transportation using electricity instead of oil sand and petroleum. Because the earth's population is increasing and the use of fuels that cause more pollution, petroleum will likely run out in time.
let's avoid polluting our earth by reducing the use of fuels that produce dirty waste!
