[ film review ] – Donnie Darko (2001) directed by Richard Kelly

Hi! This is going to be my first official post and I'm glad it's a film review.

So, for my first film review here on Tumblr, I'm going to talk about Donnie Darko (2001) on what I think about the movie.

warning ⚠️ this might contain spoilers (to those who haven't seen the movie)

Cast (main character)

First of all, Jake Gyllenhaal is such a great actor and these days he gathered a lot of hate on his treatment of Taylor Swift in their past relationship and I think that really clouded his image on his career as an actor. He is great in his field of work, not gonna lie. He's so young in this movie and he had the looks. His facial expressions really affect his performance in acting and it's just great! It sends you shivers!

Insights (movie vibe, movie messages, important scenes)

I love how it's a retro movie because it really gives that nostalgic vibe (though I never lived in the US). There were lines and scenes that I think were really hard to watch especially the treatment of other male characters towards the females and the adults to the youth. And because of that, it's a relief to see the main character confront these situations. There were important scenes as well like Donnie going to therapy, how his parents talk to him, and his views on religion and reality.

Plot (movie plot, concept, visuals, deaths)

The plot. Oh God, the plot. It's so magnificent! You'd never realize what was about to happen. It's not your typical time-travelling kind of plot. This engages mental health-kind of time travelling. The graphic images had a huge role to let the viewers understand what was going on. And you never know whether the situation is a hallucination or reality! And I think the death scene of the main character was one of the most tragic scenes I've seen. I literally cried and it's rare. The movie deserved so much recognition.

That's all I could say for now! I think I still could say a lot but there might be spoilers so I'm going to finish it there.

the introduction to existential crisis

Hi!

I’m Simptember, obviously a fake name. It’s not that I want to hide my identity but I’ve been using the “codename” for a long time now so I might as well introduce myself like that. I’m from the Philippines and I am a Filipino. My pronouns are she/her and my MBTI used to be INFP, but I took the test again and I became INTJ. It kind of didn’t make sense (my MBTI changing) because INTJs are usually defined as the “villains” (I’m totally fine with that because I don’t really consider myself the main character or the villain. therefore, I am the author jk) and to be honest, I don’t look like a villain at all (sometimes, maybe). I think I have a very bright personality and I just fit the INFP characteristics just fine. So, there’s your first part of existential crisis.

I am like most people out there. A geek, a nerd, a bookworm, a fan girl, a writer, a reader, a poet, etc. It came to the point where I get so easily bored with a certain hobby that I just keep on jumping from one hobby to another and thus, collecting a lot of personalities. And I think, that’ll bring me to success in the future. 

Currently, I don’t have a phone (they broke, 2 of them). And I think it’s not a problem (as long as I can still use the laptop, I’m just borrowing it) but it’s kind of a need? Because my family and friends still needs to contact me when I’m out. But then, I can still use a keypad, right? Yeah, I have to find that phone somewhere in my mom’s drawers. 

I am a writer in Wattpad, and I have two accounts:  simptember - where my works has a lot of recognition, also where I stock my spicy ones (mostly kpop nsfw ff).  love, ella - an underrated writing account with no published works (I’m going to upload once I’m done with a original novel)
