The first time we met DS Swain was May 2021.

On May 28 2024 this weird brunette stranger (with sculpted cheek bones) invades her privacy by jumping into her car while she's crying. She says very clearly that her wife died 2 years and 6 months prior - Nov 2021.

We know that when Vicky first played DS Swain it was a 4 episode offer, and she didn't know anything about the character's back story. She considered what the story might be for her ring that she couldn't get off, if she was divorced, a single mother.

When did Vicky get told that Lisa was, in fact, a bereaved lesbian single mother? It would have been so interesting to see her playing that out in unrelated scenes. She did have a break between Nov 2021 and May 2022. That would have been perfect timing for 6 months bereavement leave.

Also, Becky's birthday is Nov 21st, so the anniversary of her death must be pretty close to her birthday.

Swarla domestic headcanon thoughts, clothes based:

1. Carla always steals Lisa's hoodies to lounge in and sleeps in Lisa's police training T-shirt.

2. Lisa irons all of her work clothes and meticulously hangs them up with all the hangers facing the same way and clothes in colour order. Carla isn't allowed to be part of this process.

3. Betsy regularly steals Carla's clothes.

4. Lisa got rid of her own dressing gown at this point so she can always wear Carla's.

5. Lisa has tried to bin all of Carla's red clothes and replace them with blue versions.

6. Lisa has to hem all her trousers because they are too long on her otherwise.

7. Betsy mocks her mum's fashion and tries to get Carla to back her up but Carla is so smitten she 'claims' she loves everything Lisa wears.

8. Carla offered to get rid of some clothes to make space for Lisa's. Lisa responded to this by making a comment about Carla having less clothes and doing the classic Swain lip bite.

9. Lisa owns a "this girl loves Christmas" top that both Carla and Lisa regularly try hide.

10. Carla regularly brings home samples from work for Lisa to "test".

also what’s with the discourse on other social media platforms that loving swarla means condoning the unnecessary cruelty of lisa’s comment to carla. i’ve written far too long think pieces on what i think prompted lisa’s behavior and how it’s fitting for her character, still doesn’t make it okay. at all. and people saying she’s upset and she doesn’t have anyone else to turn to, so is carla meant to be her punch bag? can’t we watch that scene and recognize that it’s lisa’s way of coping but her way of coping was hurtful and unfair to carla? like girlie needs to do some deep reflecting and profusely apologize. one bad action doesn’t make a bad person but still, that needs to be acknowledged as a bad action. weird behavior that calling it out is deemed as being a bad fan? and isn’t it much more fun for us viewers to have a complex, realistic female character who messes up to analyze instead of making her into a saint, forcefully turning every wrong into a right?
