while I'm lovecraftposting, I really love looking at Shadow Over Innsmouth through the view that Dagon and the Deep Ones are friendly, nonhostile entities, perfectly chill with just coexisting with humanity - and only become a problem because of people immediately assuming they are hostile and opening fire.

Beyond the 'hehe funny fish people', it recontextualizes the entire story, reframing it as one where the racism/xenophobia is what truly causes the conflict, rather than the "evil foreign invaders." and there's something visceraly satisfying about subverting a racist's story like that

People not comprehending Nosferatu correctly might kill me. Yes it's erotic and about pleasure but yes it's devastating and about child sexual abuse.
