by Sam Manley
In a candle-lit armoury, a scribe, burdened with a backpack stuffed with scrolls, observes a dataslate with weaponry listed on the screen. The dataslate is held by a servo-skull, which hovers above a weapons crate. In the background, another servo-skull is scanning the inventory. Behind it, we see candle-lit equipment mini-shrines.

MOBY DICK QUOTES TO WRITE ON WALLS IN THE CLUB
i am embarking on a new art project where every time i go to the club i will bring a paint marker and write at least one Moby Dick quote on a bathroom wall or other graffiti-able surface
i invite you to participate and write your own Moby Dick quotes on walls in clubs. dive bar bathrooms work too
the below is my personal reference list, a selection i pulled from mobydickatsea.bsky.social's posts from the past month, but any moby dick quote is valid
“Come; let us squeeze hands all round; nay, let us all squeeze ourselves into each other”
“I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.”
“Be careful in the hunt, ye mates. Don’t stave the boats needlessly, ye harpooneers”
“It is the easiest thing in the world for a man to look as if he had a great secret in him.”
“Wonderfullest things are ever the unmentionable; deep memories yield no epitaphs“
“from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee”
“stricken, blasted, if he be, Ahab has his humanities!”
“Methinks that in looking at things spiritual, we are too much like oysters observing the sun through the water”
“his special lunacy stormed his general sanity, and carried it, and turned all its concentred cannon upon its own mad mark”
“If you should write a fable for little fishes, you would make them speak like great whales.”
“what nameless, inscrutable, unearthly thing is it; what cozening, hidden lord and master, and cruel, remorseless emperor commands me”
“the robust and man-like sea heaved with long, strong, lingering swells, as Samson’s chest in his sleep”
“Stealing unawares upon the whale in the fancied security of the middle of solitary seas, you find him unbent from the vast corpulence of his dignity, and kitten-like, he plays on the ocean as if it were a hearth.”
“There are some enterprises in which a careful disorderliness is the true method.”
“What soulless thing is this that laughs before a wreck?”
“A wild, mystical, sympathetical feeling was in me; Ahab’s quenchless feud seemed mine.”
“my body is but the lees of my better being”
“The more I pondered over this harpooneer, the more I abominated the thought of sleeping with him.”
“Doubts of all things earthly, and intuitions of some things heavenly; this combination makes neither believer nor infidel”
“A deep, settled, fanatic delirium was in his eyes.”
“I am in the habit of going to sea whenever I begin to grow hazy about the eyes”
“In tempestuous times like these, after everything above and aloft has been secured, nothing more can be done but passively to await the issue of the gale.”
“let’s drink shame upon all cowards! I name no names. Shame upon them!”
“Make a life-buoy of the coffin, and no more.”
“I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote.”
“Swerve me? The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails, whereon my soul is grooved to run.”
“What could be more full of meaning?”
“Ego non baptizo te in nomine patris, sed in nomine diaboli!”
“He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down”
“mere sounds, full of Leviathanism, but signifying nothing”
“Moby Dick was ubiquitous; that he had actually been encountered in opposite latitudes at one and the same instant of time.”
“man has lost that sense of the full awfulness of the sea which aboriginally belongs to it”
“I wonder, Flask, whether the world is anchored anywhere; if she is, she swings with an uncommon long cable, though.”
“all sailors of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable—they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness”
“an utterly fearless man is a far more dangerous comrade than a coward.”
“one serene and moonlight night, when all the waves rolled by like scrolls of silver; and, by their soft, suffusing seethings, made what seemed a silvery silence, not a solitude; on such a silent night a silvery jet was seen”
“as the swift monster drags you deeper and deeper into the frantic shoal, you bid adieu to circumspect life”
“Almost universally, a lone whale—as a solitary Leviathan is called—proves an ancient one.”
“I thought it was high time, now or never, before the light was put out, to break the spell in which I had so long been bound.”
“Human madness is oftentimes a cunning and most feline thing. When you think it fled, it may have but become transfigured into some still subtler form.”
“Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded for ever.”
“enlightened gourmand, who nailest geese to the ground and feastest on their bloated livers in thy pate de fois gras”
“we are all somehow dreadfully cracked about the head, and sadly need mending.”
“ye shall soon be initiated into certain facts hitherto pretty generally unknown”
“Such is the endlessness, yea, the intolerableness of all earthly effort.”
“harder and harder, and deeper and deeper”
“Thus, then, in our hearts’ honeymoon, lay I and Queequeg—a cosy, loving pair.”
“Upon waking next morning about daylight, I found Queequeg’s arm thrown over me in the most loving and affectionate manner. You had almost thought I had been his wife.”
