CNA TRAINING: 5 Rules of Documentation
One of the most important things that you will learn in CNA training is how to produce proper documentation. It’s a critical responsibility that all healthcare professionals share. When you’re in the business of delivering care to many people at a time, keeping tabs on patients is a necessity.
But what exactly do nursing aides need to write down? Well, a lot! From a patient’s vital signs to their food intake, nursing aides need to take note of all relevant information on their patients. This includes procedures, medications, diagnostic tests results, and interactions with different healthcare professionals. The rule of thumb is, if it’s related to a patient’s medical care, then it has to be documented.
Here are 5 major rules of documentation that every nursing assistant needs to know.
If There Are No Records, It Didn’t Happen
Without proper documentation, it’s impossible to keep the whole medical up to speed with what’s happening with a patient. There will be no proof when a specific medication was administered or notes on the kind of treatment a patient is on. And we all know that in the medical field, failing to keep track of a patient can result in serious consequences.
Write Down Your Notes Legibly
Even though health facilities are already switching from paper-based charts to electronic health records, it’s likely that you will still need to write something down on paper.  When preparing written documentation, always make sure that you write it down legibly. Your notes are practically useless if no one can read them.
Follow A System
Most of what you’re going to learn in CNA training involves following a system. Charting is no exception. Following a charting system doesn’t just make it easier for everyone to be on the same page, it also helps you stay organized. When you’re following a system, you’re less likely to miss out the little details.
Never Change Your Entries
Once you write something on the chart, you can’t go back and change it on a whim. In most healthcare facilities, altering notes without following the procedure for corrections may result in legal action. Before writing anything down, make sure you’re 100% sure of what you’re writing. If you need to correct a mistake, ask your superior how to go about it since charting policies may differ at different facilities. Never erase or block it out on your own.
Be Accurate, Yet Concise
Always review what you wrote before signing it. Check whether you’ve included all important details that everyone on the medical team should know. You may feel tempted to write down as much information as you can, but most people just want to get straight to the point. As a nursing assistant, your job is to strike the perfect balance between being accurate and staying concise.
While documentation may seem quite tedious, it’s a task that needs to be done properly. Even if you’re a medical professional with basic CNA training, your input is just as important as anyone else’s. Remember, the medical team is counting on you so make every entry count.

The Job of the CNA
The main job of the certified nursing assistant (CNA) is to give basic care to patients and help them in daily activities that they may struggle with, such as taking a bath. Due to the job’s personal nature, the CNA job description should include compassion, people skills, and being able to enjoy helping others. In long-term care facilities or in nursing homes, the CNA can be the patient’s primary caregiver.
CNAs work under registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, or licensed practical nurses. CNAs must also have excellent communication skills since they are tasked to bring patient issues and concerns to their supervisor.
CNAs also work with various medical technologies, like health information software, medical record charting software, and billing software. In certain facilities, a CNA will give the patients their medication, but this normally depends on the nursing assistant’s level of experience and training and the state’s regulations.
Job Description
CNAs help patients with their day-to-day activities. There also are some CNAs with extra responsibilities. The basic functions of the CNA’s job include:
Taking vital signs
Serving patients their meals and helping them eat
Bathing and dressing patients
Providing and emptying the bedpans
Collecting information on treatment plans and patients’ information from doctors, nurses, and caregivers
Answering patient calls
Lifting patients into their beds, exam tables, or wheelchairs
Cleaning and sanitizing patient areas
Examining patients for blood in the urine, bruises, and other wounds/injuries
Changing bed sheets and restocking the rooms with the needed supplies
A certified nursing assistant acts as a link between the patients and doctors and nurses. The CNA also records and transmit all issues to the medical staff. Other duties of the CNA may entail transporting patients to treatment units or operating rooms and setting up equipment as requested by doctors or nurses. However, the extra duties depend on the state where the CNA works.
Those who want to be CNAs should know that the job is not glamorous. At times, you may be seeing things that other people don’t want to see. From cleaning up after a patient or dressing wounds, CNAs are often tested to their limits almost daily.
Salaries And Income Outlook
Career prospects for CNAs are expected grow and maintain their momentum for the next few years. The profession is expected to grow at a rate of 11%, which is faster than the average job growth. As the population grows old, demand for 24/7 personal services is on the rise.
How much does a CNA earn? According to the U.S. BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), the median income for CNAs as recorded in the agency’s Occupational Outlook Handbook is $26,590. However, earnings vary depending on where you work. There are more experienced nursing assistants who earn more than $36,000 annually.
What CNAs Learn in School
While you don’t need a bachelor’s degree to become a CNA, you’ll need a certificate and pass a certification exam. In class, you’ll learn about taking vital signs, infection control, and personally caring for the patient. There are also topics like patients’ rights and communication skills.
Upon completion of the CNA program, take the certification exam, which normally includes a manual skills test and a multiple-choice exam.
With flexible work hours and a strong job outlook, the certified nursing assistant job is an excellent starting point into the thriving healthcare profession. Many courses last up to 12 weeks and many schools have online study programs.

8 Traits that any Future CNA or Certified Nursing Assistant Must Have
More than knowledge and skills, CNAs need to have the right qualities for the job. It’s not enough that you know how to do the tasks that are expected of you, you also need to develop character traits that will make you an effective nursing aide. After all, you’re not just performing a regular 9-5, you’re caring for living, breathing people.
If you’re thinking of becoming a CNA or Certified Nursing Assistant someday, here’s a list of the 8 traits that you need to have.
A Big Heart
As a CNA, you’ll be dealing with hurting patients every day. Even if you’re at the top of your class, you’ll have a hard time getting through to your patients if you don’t have a natural compassion for people. Plus points if you’re a CNA with a big heart AND a sense of humor. Because if you can make patients laugh or at least feel more at ease, it will be easier for you to accomplish your tasks.
A Clear Purpose
Just ask anyone working in the medical field how they got there in the first place, and they will probably tell you that caring for people is their calling. Same goes with CNAs. It’s not a dream or ambition that just popped up out of nowhere. Working with sick and hurting people every single day is more than just work. It’s a vocation.
Quick To Adapt
A nursing aide’s life is packed with all sorts of challenges. One day you can be changing bedding, the next, you can be assisting a nurse with patients. CNAs need to be quick on their feet and have the ability to adapt to any situation that comes their way.
Excellent Work Ethic
Because nursing assistants play a crucial role in delivering care to patients, you need to have an excellent sense of worth ethic to be able to do your part. Some days will drain life out of you, but that doesn’t give you any reason to take it out on the patients.
Attention To Detail
Every little detail counts when it comes to caring for patients. Since you’ll be spending more time with them than nurses or doctors, it’s up to you watch out for signs that tell you something’s wrong.
Communication Skills
You’ll be talking to all sorts of people every day so it’s also important that you have strong communication skills to process information and get your thoughts across. You’ll never know when a patient’s life depends on it.
Physically Fit
A CNA’s job can be physically exhausting with all the lifting, running, pushing, carrying and standing that happens during a 10-12 hour shift. You also need to set a good example to your patients by exercising regularly and eating healthy.
Strong Emotionally
A CNA or Certified Nursing Assistant’s job doesn’t end there. Aside from being physically fit, you also need to be emotionally strong to be an effective nursing aide. You’ll meet patients who are scared or in pain every day so you need to be emotionally and mentally prepared to take care of them.

What to Look for In CNA Programs Near Me
Studying to become a Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA gives you a chance to help improve the quality of life of patients suffering from different illnesses. Your assignments may vary depending on where you would like to seek employment, whether in hospices, residential nursing care facilities, retirement homes, assisted-living facilities, hospitals, or clinics.
There are also various nursing education institutions where you can choose to get your certification from. The most logical choices would, of course, be those that are located near you and are easily accessible. Apart from location, there are other important considerations for you to take note of.
Search for CNA Programs Near Me
When you do your research on where you would like to start pursuing your career as a CNA, you will find that there are quite a great number of CNA schools in Houston that offer CNA certification. As you examine and evaluate your options, keep the following considerations in mind:
Accreditation – look for a school that has the necessary accreditations and licenses. This gives you a guarantee that the school observes the highest standards of training and education in the nursing industry. You will get excellent training that will help you land a job as soon as you get your CNA certification.
Getting your CNA certification from an accredited school will give you the education credits that you need should you want to pursue further studies in the medical or healthcare field. You can easily get accepted at other accredited schools to get your degree.
See to it that the school is state-approved and that the program they offer qualifies you to take and prepares you to pass a state-designated examination as a requirement for CNA certifications in Houston.
Certification Standards – find out if the school you are interest in fulfills the state’s certification requirements. A first-rate school will provide the academic or theoretical education that the state requires as well as hands-on training. If they do not have their own nursing or medical facility, they should have tie-ups or partnerships with one or several where their students can do their clinical rotations. Apart from this, they should also provide their students with CPR/BLS training.
Focused Training and Extensive Teaching Program – take a closer look at the school’s curriculum. It should cover all pertinent topics that you need to enrich your knowledge in your chosen field. Get to know the instructors and find out if they are credible and competent to teach and inspire. In a lot of cases, it’s not enough to dole out textbook lessons. They should also be able to influence and inspire their students to care for and serve their patients with a combination of skill and compassion.
Mode of Instruction – a lot of schools are getting more and more creative these days when it comes to how they teach their students. Conventional lectures and teacher presentations are supplemented with multi-media learning materials, simulations and role-playing, and laboratory practice among others. The hands-on training that’s usually required towards the end of the program should also prepare you for stints in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and other healthcare settings where your services will be needed.
Affordability – this is something that is considered by anyone who plans to pursue higher education. The nursing school should have reasonable fees and offer payment plan options to its enrollees. You have to look for low cost CNA classes in Houston that provide high quality instruction and training and that are conducted in state of the art facilities.
Do not settle for just any CNA classes near you. Make sure that the nursing school you choose more than adequately equips and prepares you for a thriving career where you can excel and make a difference in the lives of your patients.

5 Reasons Why You Should Become A Nurse Aide?
When it comes to choosing a rewarding career, you will rarely find a career as rewarding as that in the healthcare and medicine industry. Having the power and the means to help someone in a life-threatening situation can make you feel more satisfied and fulfilled about your career decision.
Every year, there is an increasing demand for people with the qualifications to work in the healthcare industry. Hospitals are often found suffering from a lack of qualified personnel to support and provide personalized care for patients.
Hospitals are always on the lookout for more qualified personnel, there’s no better time to get started in this exciting, growing, and respective industry.
Here are five reasons why you should consider becoming a certified nurse assistant (CNA):
1. In-Demand Career
The health care sector is one of the busiest and largest employers in the US. Each year there is a growing demand for health-related open positions, but surprisingly medical universities and training institutions don’t see enough demand from the students looking to get into this high-demand public sector, but this will likely change in the near future.
According to the most recent reports, the healthcare industry has just become the largest employer in the U.S. surpassing manufacturing and retail industries, who were previously the drive force of the economy and the job market.
Which makes this the best time to learn the necessary skills to work in a profession with high possibilities of employment.
2. Good Salary
It is obvious that we all want to pursue a job or a career that pay decent and livable wages without having to work long stressful hours and have a good life/work balance. A certified nurse aide can typically expect to earn around $45,000 per year, or more depending on her qualifications.
Not only that, but a CNA position may sometimes come with many other social benefits to make it all worth your while.
3. Endless Learning Opportunities
While most people dread going to their day job simply because of the fact that all days sound similar, a nursing job is typically more challenging and every day is a a different day where you meet and interact with different patients and you get to learn a lot of valuable lessons from the various situations that you will face everyday.
As a result of this daily challenges, a nurse aide’s typical day at work can be a lot more exciting and rewarding.
4. Various Workplaces
If you we’re to ask the majority of people where nurse aides are found, most people will tell you that they’re always at hospitals. But that’s not always the case.
While nurse aides are typically found in hospitals, there are variety of other workplaces available for qualified nurse aids such as schools, charities, public organizations, pharmacies, just to name a few.
They’re not just devoted to hospitals anymore, I’m sure you have seen nurse aides before at the doctor’s office or at pharmacies, right? Meaning it’s far easier nowadays to find nurse aide job positions since they’re available at a variety of workplaces due to growing demand.
5. Rewarding Career
Do you know of any other career more rewarding than nursing? Chances are you don’t. There are very few professions out there that could make you feel good about yourself like nursing.
Nothing can be more rewarding, fulfilling, and satisfying than helping save people’s lives and being thanked for it.
These are just a few reasons why a nurse aide can be one of the most rewarding careers ever, especially suitable for people who love to help people.

How Can A Career In CNA Training Benefit You?
youtube
If you’re looking for a starter career path in the medical field, there’s no better way to do it than going through a 3 week CNA training program at the CNA Training Institute.  Apart from being able to start working within a month or less of achieving your CNA certification, we thought this article was an interesting find on how a new college student is applying her CNA training education as taken from the Spencer Daily Reporter publication:
Spencer High School junior Chloe Johnson is taking her first steps to becoming an anesthesiologist while she is still in high school by getting her certified nursing assistant training.
“With my CNA training, I am planning on working in a nursing home through college,” Johnson said. “I would like to go further into the medical industry. This is my first medical experience. I have also taken Mrs. Reiman’s other college courses.”
The CNA training is offered through a joint effort by SHS and Iowa Lakes Community College. The program is just one of many classes students can receive college credit for while still in high school in the medical field.
“To receive a CNA certification, my students have to do 75 hours total of class time; 30 hours are in the classroom, 15 hours are in a lab and 30 hours working in a nursing home,” SHS health science instructor Lisa Reiman said. “We go to St. Luke Lutheran Home and they work directly with residents. St. Luke is really good to us. Their staff is so helpful and they are wonderful. It works really, really well.”
Now that is a really creative way to further your career.  At the CNA Training Institute, we can help you become CNA Certified and if you’re interested in furthering your education, acquiring a job as a professional CNA after getting certified can definitely not only help you pay for further education in the medical field, but also provide you with actual working experience that will look great on your resume for your future career in advance healthcare!
CNA Training is definitely high in demand not only in the city of Houston, its in demand everywhere as noted in The Daily Sentinel Publication:
The growing need for certified nursing assistants in the Grand Valley is leading the area’s training sites to add class sessions in hopes of readying more assistants to fill the gaps.
Larchwood Inns, Western Colorado Community College and Western Colorado Area Health Education Center have all stepped up to try to train more CNAs by adding classes to what have already been available.
“It’s just always been a need,” said Georgia Hoaglund, executive director of the health education center.

Benefits and Pay for Certified Nursing Assistants
Your yearly compensation as a CNA will depend on if you are a salaried employee or paid via an hourly wage.  Most CNAs are paid by the hour and compensation will depend on if you work 10 hours a week or pull extra duty and log in 60 hours.
The hourly wage earned by CNAs in Texas is dependent on location and the number of available jobs.  Currently in Texas, there are more than 40 thousand positions available for medical assistants of one type or another.  CNAs are is great demand and that bodes well for career opportunities after graduation and for long-term job security.
Pay is typically higher in bigger cities where the need is greater and there are numerous unfilled positions.  A good certified nurse’s aide can generally earn from $20,000 per year to over $30,000 per year in areas of high demand.
CNAs that travel can earn more than employees of a particular facility.  This higher pay compensates them for the lack of company benefits (which are not typically available to them) and the fact that they have to travel to get to each of their patients.
As a valued employee of a health care facility, you may be eligible for the company benefits program which may include things like group health care, a retirement plan such as a 401k, and paid vacation.  Another common benefit is access to a life insurance policy at attractive rates.  It is also worthwhile to mention that vacation time, especially paid vacation time, is a priceless benefit that many health care institutions now offer.
More time on the job will also influence how much you can earn as a CNA.  Many employers also have a bonus pool for their employees who perform above and beyond.
The best way to know your value as a certified nurse’s aide is to apply to several jobs at a variety of healthcare facilities near you such as a hospital, medical office, nursing home, assisted living facility and with a health care agency.   Where there is a shortage of help and a high demand for CNAs is the place you will find the highest salaries or hourly pay offered.  It is important that you compare job offers that are near you.  A higher paying job farther away will necessarily cost you more in commuting expenses and the higher pay difference may be completely wiped out in extra gas or transit costs.

Six Health Tips for CNAs
Caring for people that need your help is a rewarding part of being a certified nursing aide.  But it can also be a stressful and physically demanding position.  In order to be at your best at work, and at home, here are a few tips to help you take care of yourself so you are in a better position to take care of others.
Take care of your feet. It is no secret that CNAs can spend hours at a time on their feet.  Choose your footwear wisely. Make sure shoes are comfortable and roomy so that you don’t get blisters.  They should also provide good support while walking or standing.  Rest your feet and legs when possible – at lunch or when you are on a break – so that you are ready to resume your shift when your break is over.
During training, CNAs are taught how to move patients safely for the sake of the patient and to protect the CNA’s back from injury from lifting incorrectly. If you exercise and have good posture, your back should not become an issue.  Stretching and using proper lifting methods will go a long way to making sure you don’t get a sore back.
Keeping hydrated is another secret to keeping you refreshed and focused during a long work day. Drink plenty of water every day and especially during your shift and you won’t get headaches or become overly fatigued.
Without plenty of sleep, you can also become tired, become irritable and lose focus. Determine what amount of sleep allows you to wake up well rested and ready for another day and try to meet that minimum each night before work.
Maintain a healthy diet to fuel your body. A healthy diet is good for your patients, but it is also essential for you.  A balanced diet will help you feel good and give you the nourishment to do your job and enjoy life.  A good diet is the first step to taking care of yourself.
Our final tip is related to the stresses of the job. Working in the medical profession comes with stresses that are hard for other outside of health care to imagine.  Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or taking a walk on your lunch break.  Exercise is also a great stress reliever.  Too much stress can ruin your health and your positive outlook, both of which are essential for a CNA.
Remember that your health and well-being are important, too.  Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and optimum fitness for the job will allow you to face each demanding day refreshed and fit for the challenges that may lie ahead.

CNA Professional Career Life Lessons
Tumblr media
Those considering a career as a certified nursing assistant might be drawn to a career in medicine and need a place to start. Others heed the call to serve and a position as a nurse’s aide fulfills that calling. Days spent in the service of others who truly depend on you CNA be both rewarding and frustrating, yet most who enter the profession wouldn’t trade those experiences and difficult lessons learned for anything.
One of the key lessons that one learns as a CNA is that relationships matter. From the bonds formed with patients, to the lifelong friendships with other staff members, to the respect earned from the doctors and medical staff, each of these relationships contributes to job satisfaction and an elevated feeling of self-worth.
There are few other professions where so much is needed by so many. It is a profession where even the smallest kindness is rewarded in ways that are too numerous to count. Playing a pivotal role in the quality of life for those in need is life-enriching and empowers one to do more than ever thought possible. Relationship-building skills are essential in any profession, and especially so as a nurse’s aide. The strong bonds that develop are the glue that holds everything together when it seems that everything is going wrong.
Another lesson that CNAs learn is how to calmly and effectively adapt to any situation that arises. This survival skill serves CNAs well on the job and in life in general. To be able to assess the situation quickly while thinking on one’s feet and managing a dozen patient residents at the same time is the kind of multi-tasking that translates well to personal life situations. Knowing that so many people are depending on the nurse’s aide to figure it out and make it work develops confidence in one’s ability to handle any of life’s crises at home that seem to occur on a weekly basis.
The ability to persevere no matter what happens is one of those life skills that can’t be taught, it must be earned through overcoming obstacles that seem insurmountable at the time. CNAs face these challenges almost on a daily basis. Whether one is faced with an unplanned disruption to patient schedules, lack of support due to absenteeism, or fixing careless mistakes made by other CNAs, delivering consistent care in the face of these obstacles gives one the ability to endure most anything that life throws at them.
It is the toughest parts of being a CNA that are, in the end, the most personally rewarding. If one takes a moment and reflects on these lessons learned, it becomes crystal clear that these are the very life lessons that enrich our lives and enable us to improve the quality of life for ourselves and our own families. And the beauty of it all is that these lessons are learned while dedicating our professional careers to the service of others which is reward in and of itself.

What Kind of CNA Salary Can You Expect?

Here in Texas, the demand for certified nursing assistants is quite high.  A growing elderly population and greater access to healthcare brought about by the Affordable Health Care Act are fueling an increase in the need for qualified nursing assistants.
According to highcharts.com, the national salary range for certified nurse’s aides ranges from $25,349 on the low side to $37,473 per year with a median annual salary of $30,855.  These figures are countrywide and include nurse assistants with little or no experience on up to aides with several years’ experience.
Regarding total compensation, bonuses do not add much to the national median annual salary.  However, healthcare benefits are a significant portion of total compensation provided by employers and must be factored into an evaluation of a compensation package.  Other benefits which are available to certified nursing assistants include social security, retirement savings plans such as 401k and 403b plans, pensions and time off.  These benefits make up a substantial portion of a pay package for CNAs and, compared with other entry-level careers, are significant and noteworthy.
Even better news for students that are currently enrolled in CNA classes in the Houston area is the fact that Texas’ salaries a bit higher than the national average and Houston salaries are near the top of the range of Texas salaries.  So if you are enrolled in training at the Consolidated Nurses Aide Training Institute, your prospects for earning a good starting salary are good.  Current data provided by salary.com and updated on January 31, 2017 show that median salaries in the state start at $21,771 in the Midland-Odessa region and top out at over $31,000 (median for all levels of experience) in the Houston area.
If you are a CNA in Texas, Houston is the place to be.  Salaries vary widely across the state and nationally and depend on level of experience and other factors.  But it is good to know that demand in Houston is great and keeps CNA salary levels on the high side compared with other places you might choose to work.

Sharpen your cooking skills and improve your diet (and even your social life)
When I was in college, my cooking skills were limited to a giant skillet of Tuna Helper. Meals were chosen by how quick and how cheap. Nutrition? Never heard of it.
My outlook on cooking has changed since those days, and I now realize that despite my still limited culinary know-how, in the kitchen I have all the tools to transform my health.
“Cooking is easier than people think,” says Dr. David Eisenberg of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “It is more fun and cheaper than eating out. And no matter your ability, anyone can learn to do it.”
Tumblr media
The health of cooking
The more you cook for yourself, the healthier you live. It is that simple. People who frequently cook dinner at home eat healthier and consume fewer calories than those who cook less, according to a study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition. The findings also suggest those who frequently cook at home (six to seven nights a week) also consume fewer calories on the occasions when they do eat out.
Cooking also expands your intake of healthy foods. For instance, people who live alone — who are less likely to cook on a regular basis — often have diets that lack core food groups, such as fruits, vegetables, and fish, according to a review of 41 studies published in Nutrition Reviews.
Sharpen your skills
You don’t need to be a contestant on Top Chef to improve your cooking. “Instead of learning individual recipes, you need to learn techniques,” says Dr. Eisenberg. “This way, you can master a few basic staples and have the recipe for making all kinds of meals.” Here are some basic skills he says people should learn:
how to fillet fish
how to cut vegetables into cubes or julienne strips
how to make simple soups, salads, and salad dressings
how to make a few whole-grain dishes (e.g. brown rice, quinoa, farro, and others) as your starch of choice, as opposed to potatoes, white rice, or white bread
how to pick and prepare healthier protein choices like fish, chicken, and tofu, as an alternative to a preponderance of red meat options
how to reinvent desserts to include things like nuts, dark chocolate, and fruit, rather than dishes made primarily from fat, sugar, and dairy.
