“My own kind attacked me today.”
The King’s guardsman sat up straighter at the desk where an array of scouting logs lay sprawled. None of it contained good news. This, however, was an even more startling accusation and one that would need to be dealt with first.
“What do you mean, Meludir? Who attacked you?” Feren stayed rooted in his chair, but the muscles of his shoulder and jaw were taut like a readied bow string. The Avar rarely acted rashly — not in this Age at least. In his youth, yes, Feren had his moments of blind idiocy fueled by unchecked passions, but those days were long behind him. He was too old to be reckless, had seen the dire consequences of such actions.
A hand motioned to the seat opposite his across the spans of dark tidings that spoke of spiders and shadows. “Sit, my friend. Tell me everything.”

SIX WORDS .
❝ i heard you were doing good. ❞ ❝ you don’t grow your horns overnight. ❞ ❝ i promise, it gets better eventually. ❞ ❝ & we never talked after that. ❞ ❝ am i really, truly, that unlovable? ❞ ❝ don’t talk like you’re coming back. ❞ ❝ my most dangerous habit is trusting. ❞ ❝ we’re made of stars & stories. ❞ ❝ you didn’t have to do that. ❞ ❝ everything is poetry when you’re drunk. ❞ ❝ did i mean anything to you? ❞ ❝ real feelings don’t just go away. ❞ ❝ you came & changed the weather. ❞ ❝ when can you just be mine? ❞ ❝ there was no love, only lust. ❞ ❝ darling, stop wishing on dead stars. ❞ ❝ art is another form of screaming. ❞ ❝ silence is the most painful goodbye. ❞ ❝ what the fuck did you do? ❞ ❝ i’m drunk, dizzy & missing you. ❞ ❝ kiss me like you’re losing me. ❞ ❝ i don’t feel like smiling today. ❞ ❝ not all good people are innocent. ❞ ❝ we’re a disaster in the making. ❞ ❝ some things are better left unsaid. ❞ ❝ we really should’ve talked about it. ❞ ❝ i’m so glad i met you. ❞ ❝ i wish i knew you earlier. ❞ ❝ i fucked (pronoun/name) to our song. ❞ ❝ i dreamed of you this night. ❞
TEN WORDS .

“We’re gonna chase down the monster.” (From Legolas)
Feren looked up from the patrol reports at the young prince. The Greenwood had been particularly busy of late, and now that the captain thought of it, the little Greenleaf of the Greenwood most likely hadn’t been receiving the usual amount of attention. In truth, Feren didn’t have the time to cater to the whims of Thranduil’s son.
“Oh are we?” He arched a brow, looking rather quizzically at his occasional ward.
Legolas, Prince of the Greenwood…and Prince of the Avari. For nearly three Ages, Feren and been The Prince of the Avari but this was no longer true. Legolas was The Prince, the new Prince, and in many ways, Legolas meant far more to the Unwilling than Feren. Legolas was their future — the physical embodiment of the Avarin people and their Sindarin Invaders. The People adored their young prince. If Feren was a lesser elf, he’d be jealous, but how could Feren be jealous of the child of two people he adored? One of which, perhaps, more apt to describe the feeling as love. It was a complicated situation.
He cast one more glance down at the list before neatly rolling up the scroll. It could wait until later. “Well, my prince, if we are going to chase down the monster, we will need provisions from the cellar…but we must be sneaky, mustn’t we. Come. Shall we raid the kitchens?”

“I promised myself I wouldn’t let you complete me.”
Concentration seemingly unbroken by the avowal, Feren continued to fold the King of the Greenwood’s underclothing. Earlier in the evening, he’d sent away the maids normally assigned the task. Stealing away these tasks made it easy to pretend things were as simple as the tasks themselves.
Well, this task was not so simple. The folds had to be just right or else it would crinkle. No one, least of all a king, wanted crinkled undergarments.
It could be said that the Avari as a whole suffered from a shared allergy to expressing their emotions of any sort. Moreover, their ways of affection were far more physical and far less gentle than those of the Sindar. To his aggravation, the Avar never quite knew how to respond to Thranduil’s overt declarations of affection.
Feren could speak languages of Men and Elves, both common and dead. He could recite the verses of legendary epics and playful ditties alike with ease. Word play over politics and policies never fazed him, and yet, he could not for the eternal life of him find the proper words to return his King’s affection.
Instead, he folded his king’s clothing with the same care Celebrimbor crafted the Rings of Power. Alas, there would inevitably be nothing left the fold. As was the case now, forcing Feren to look up from his self-assigned chore.
“Promises should not be made lightly, Thranduil,” Feren commented slowly, struggling not to fumble over his tongue that slowly turned to lead as he churned over what to say next that might resemble something tender. “But I can think of more solemn vows to break.” If not romantic, at least it was factual.

By your local Avari enthusiast.
The Settling Of The Greenwood
Mun Note: This is strictly headcanon, based loosely off what we already know and pieced together with local Avari enthusiast, @shutthegate, without whom my ass would never have gotten this done. (I promised this post two years ago, bless.)
This is not a discourse post, so please don’t make it into one.
This post is here solely to better understand the culture of the Greenwood as it is run on this blog and as Thranduil rules it. It is also to give me a frame of reference for what things were like in what time period so I can better paint a picture of what is happening in threads in any given timeline.
When Oropher arrived with his considerable company to the Greenwood forest, it already had a fair population of elves residing within it’s boundaries. The population was mostly displaced Nandor who had found refuge beneath the boughs and branches of the great forest, but among them were many Avari tribes.
Though the Avari had scattered following the siege of Angband, where they had stood united under a singular Hwen Lai chieftess, they remained united in their refusal to sail until Morgoth and Sauron were entirely defeated and all traces of them fully purged from the world. Several surviving tribes had been mingling among the displaced Nandor, for the forest was their home and they had no want for war against those with whom they had no quarrel. There was blood enough in the rivers as it was, and their focus around the time Oropher had arrived had been in reviving the Greenwood and her land.
To the eyes of the Sindar, there was no structure to be found. The Nandor were leaderless and afraid, the Avari were fleeting and seemingly few. Oropher did not consider his claim over the dominion to be a hostile takeover so much as a benevolent dictatorship. His people gathered the Nandor and spoke with them, gained their faith and allegiance. Making up the most of the populace as they did, the Nandor’s acceptance of Oropher forced the Avari into a difficult position. They had no wish to leave their forest, but nor did they possess the numbers to challenge both the Nandor and the Sindar that had collectively decided to take over.
Now, it should be noted that the Avari concept of kinslaying is much narrower than that of other elves; they do not count those outside of themselves as kin, so had they the numbers, Oropher’s easy assimilation could have been met with a sharp challenge and blood filled rivers once more. As it was, the Avari were forced to concede themselves to Oropher’s rule – it was a reluctant gesture and one that came with a wealth of bitterness to which the Nandor and Sindar were largely oblivious.
Due to the nature of their tribes, there were over nine dialects in the Greenwood at the start. In order to make matters simpler, Oropher imposed a law not unlike his brother Thingol’s, making Silvan – the language most broadly spoken among the Nandor presently residing there – the kingdom’s native tongue. The Sindar were encouraged to embrace the way of the Nandor, and the two nations mingled peaceably and with great joy on the part of the Nandor.
The Avari were not quite as pleased.
Forced to assimilate or risk expulsion and unwanted turmoil, for the want of temporary unity the Avari tribes placed themselves carefully throughout the kingdom. They adopted the Sindarin imposed pseudo-Nandorin way of life, spoke in their tongues, attended their social gatherings and appeared for all the world a part of the cycle. Princes and princesses of the tribes were settled into strategic corners as guards and even servants and personal attendants to the new Sindarin lords, for the Avari leaders were perfectly prepared to make use of Oropher and his people if they needed to – or dispose of them if they had to.
Some came to find genuine friendships despite themselves, though there was little overt loyalty from the Avari toward Oropher and his leading lords until the Battle of the Last Alliance. It was less for Oropher that the Avari marched alongside Sindar and Nandor – it was for their own duty and their own dedication to the defeat of darkness that they rode. Those who survived gained respect for Oropher in his death that he never truly held from them in life. The coming of King Thranduil was not something the Avari expected to be any different from the ruling of Oropher, but they had underestimated vastly the observance of the young prince, and his loyalty to the Avari they had carefully set around him.
Alongside his wife, the new King Thranduil caused something of an Avari renaissance, encouraging their languages and culture to be shared. This was met with reluctance and distrust, though with time and persistence it became clear that he meant well, despite his ignorance. There would be no uniting of the tribes under Thranduil’s rule, but there was a much more honest peace thanks to his considerable efforts to include the Avari in the kingdom and it’s overall decisions. The new council of lords consisted of representatives from all the tribes, several Nandor, and two of Oropher’s previous advisors. Amongst the lot of them, Greenwood flourished in a different manner from Oropher’s, and was more open to it’s neighbors.
Though Thranduil had isolationist ideals thanks to both his upbringing and his father’s way of life, he was aware that the Greenwood was a part of the world. Which is why he is very much canon divergent, as the spread of darkness throughout his forest would not be something for which he would keep silence; of course, considering the Council of the Wise was lead by Saruman, it could be most of his letters of warning simply got ‘lost’. Which could attribute to his less than welcoming treatment of Gandalf – but that’s a whole other meta, I’m sure.

Very few things managed to make Feren feel guilty, but Thranduil’s current reaction to this impending excursion twisted a knife in his gut. However, this wasn’t a pleasurable trip but rather one of high importance. A shadow was rising and if left unchallenged, it would consume the Greenwood as well with the rest of Middle Earth.
“Thranduil…” Feren sighed his King’s name, closing the distance between them to place a hand on Thran’s left shoulder. “I would not go if this was a trivial matter, but if what Galadriel fears is true, we will need to act.” The Avar, who too easily passed as a Silva by this Age, slipped into the Hwen Lai tongue to imply the words he could not openly speak.
The Avari had fought this evil from the very beginning, and they would fight it until the very end - with or without the blessing of their Sindarin King. They had blended into the mix of Silvan well over the centuries, but they were still the Unwilling. The War of the Last Alliance had only bought them time and that time was running out. News of a shadow in Dol Guldur had stirred an unrest among the Avari not present since the second age, and Feren felt himself being pulled in two directions.
"I’ll be back before you know I’m gone."
{ Hamilton Starters }
“That is impossible,” Thranduil did not look up from his scrolls, unwilling to face Feren directly at the moment. He remained firmly against this, but he would not stop his loyal guard from doing what he felt was necessary, either. “I always feel your absence, no matter how small and fleeting. Nevertheless, go. The sooner this is done, the sooner you can return to me.”
