Cafes were nice. They had cozy atmospheres and nice smells and even nicer tasting drinks. Shinobu had been curious to know if this cafe was still cozy despite being in such a horrible situation, which is how they found themselves gently pushing the door open and entering the area.

They quirked an eyebrow when they noticed someone behind the bar, giving a small wave. Did they work here? No, it couldn’t be... they were probably just another student. Another new potential friend!

“Hey there!” they smiled as they walked over to them, holding out the hand with Hitsuji on it in greeting. “I’m Shinobu! Nice to meet you.”

Elijah’s exploration of the new area had finally, finally taken him to the cafe. And cafes meant coffee. The good stuff. He was all for that. Now if only he could figure out how all of these supplies actually worked. He was familiar with ordinary coffee makers, but all of this other stuff…

Maybe there was something behind the counter that would be of use? So Elijah ducked down behind the bar, searching for… pretty much any kind of instruction manual.

His search did not last long at all. A few minutes after the search began, Elijah heard the sound of the cafe door opening, then footsteps coming in. He popped back up to see who it was. Another person he hadn’t talked to yet. It was weird, how he kept running into strangers and not people he already knew. And this one even had puppets on their hands. Either that or really weird gloves. Elijah could already tell that this was going to be a ride.

Shinobu looked around the shop, absolutely awestruck by all of the fabric. When was the last time they had even visited a fabric store...? Much too long, that was for sure. 

It was a place they felt right at home at, and immediately noticed the other person there. They hadn’t thought they’d find anyone else in here but it was always nice to have someone to talk to. Being friendly was the best way to keep up someone’s hopes around here. Or at least, that’s what they thought.

“Hi there. What brings you here?” Shinobu asked, walking over to the work station to greet them.

Akira had been enjoying the time he spent with Maemi on their adventure… but the small male wanted to visit one place on his own time. He stood outside the familiar building, a feeling of homesickness welling up inside him.

Slowly he entered the shop, the smell of fabrics easing his worries as he walked down to the work station, sitting down in the spinning chair.

He placed Little Foot on the counter as he sat there, gazing around the area, a small smile on his face, though it slowly turned to a look of sorrow, small tears pricking his eyes.

The small boy wiped them away, turning the chair to face the work station, a feeling of home washing through him.

“I miss you…”

He seemed too absorbed in his own thoughts to notice the ring of the bell as someone else entered the shop…

“Yeah. I guess we could always just reopen them by stabbing them or whatever. I think that works...” Shinobu mumbled, glancing away for a moment. Their head snapped back up however when he held up the earrings to them.

“Oh! They’re so pretty!” they gasped, their face lighting up into a bright smile. “I need to try those on right now!” they giggled, stepping over to get them from him. “Oh, here, I probably can’t put those on with you two here...” they mumbled, pulling off the puppets and hanging them on their suspenders. So that’s why they wore them like that.

“You guys will get your jewelry in a second, just hold on.” they laughed to the puppets as they held their hand to get the earrings from Mitsuo.

“Yeah totally!” Mitsuo responds with enthusiasm, already turning to start sifting through the displays of jewelry for those with red and green stones. Shinobu seems open to the idea so now it’s dress up time. Apparently that’s the theme of this chapter.

“Well only one way to find out! I think it’s different for different people, some can’t even go a couple months without earrings before they close up, but sometimes they’ll stay open for years. Maybe it’s got something to do with how they heal?” Mitsuo shrugs, he is not a doctor, nor a professional piercer. “Oh, here we go!”

He turns with a pair of dangling emerald earrings held up in his sparkling hands. “Ta-da! How about these?”

He laughs a bit at the suggestion of bracelet-collars for the puppets but hey, why not? “Sure, sure, we can probably find something to suit them!”

((heyy just a tiny ooc memo that my only other two co-workers are gone ((one is resigning and the other is on vacation)) which leaves me to pick up ALL OF THEIR SLACK so if you don’t see me around as much as usual it’s because I’m busy at work. Sorry for that! The co-worker on vacation should be coming back soon so I’ll try and get back to posting a bunch asap.))

“You think so?” Shinobu asked, tilting their head a bit as they listened to the suggestions. “I’ve always liked the color red.. Although I guess green would bring out my eyes more.” they nodded a few times. They seemed to be genuinely interested in all of this now.

“Actually, yeah.” they nodded when their ears were brought up. “I got them pierced when I was really little so I don’t know if they’ve closed up or not since I haven’t worn earrings in forever... But it’s worth a shot, right?” they gave him a small smile.

“Hey, maybe we can even find something that Hitsuji and Okami might like.” they added on with a giggle. “I bet some bracelets here might look like nice collars to them.”

Mitsuo’s grin widens at the laughter. It sounds just entertained, not mocking, so he finds it cute. Not that he really expected Shinobu to try and make fun of him for all the jewelry- someone who walks around with puppets on their hands all the time is probably not in a position to judge anyone else for their accessories.

Do they ever take those off? The comment about rings again makes Mitsuo wonder if Shinobu actually has hands under there, but… that doesn’t seem like a great thing to ask. Very personal, no real tactful way to approach, so you know what? He’ll let it go.

“No problem, there’s lots of other stuff! Reds and greens would probably look good on you,” Not that Mitsuo’s really caring about color combinations at the moment since his method of selection seems to be ‘whatever is shiniest’ but hey. “There’s a bunch of cool earrings too! Are your ears pierced?”

“Ah, yeah. That’s right.” Shinobu nodded in confirmation, kind of happy that he had remembered their name. Remembering each other’s names was the first step to becoming friends in their mind and they thought it might be nice to have some friends that weren’t made out of various fabrics.

“Oh, I’m just exploring.” they gave a small shrug, lightly laughing at the display he was putting on. This guy was great and Shinobu honestly wouldn’t mind spending more time with them. They had an attitude that just immediately made them feel comfortable... that was nice.

“But if you have any suggestions I wouldn’t mind looking at them.” he added on with a grin and another small laugh. “Maybe not rings though... I don’t think those would work as well on me.”

Mitsuo pauses in the middle of looping a necklace around his arm to form a bracelet and turns. He didn’t immediately recognize the voice, but he definitely recognizes the face- and the puppets. Kind of hard to mistake that even if they’ve only talked once before.

“Yeah, that’s me!” Sure enough, there’s no hint of sheepishness at getting caught playing dress up with all this hecking jewelry. “And you’re Shinobu-kun, yeah?” Mitsuo fortunately has a fairly good memory for names. He doesn’t remember seeing Shinobu around much since the other day though, maybe they just keep to themself a lot?

“What brings you in here anyway? Looking for something shiny?” He grins, waving one ring-bedecked hand so the gems glitter and cast sprays of light around. Shield your eyes! Okay it’s not that bad but still.

Shinobu had decided to go exploring, wandering in and out of various places to see what they held and if they were of any interest. This is how they found themselves walking into the jewelry store... and immediately noticing the other person there. 

Honestly, how could one not notice Mitsuo? He was already bright enough as it was an now here he was completely covered in what looked like half of the store’s merchandise to Shinobu. He must really like standing out...

“Oh, um.... hello.” Shinobu gave a tiny wave of Hitsuji as a greeting to the boy still facing away from them. “You’re Mitsuo, right?” they asked, smiling a bit. At least they had walked into a familiar face. There weren’t many people they knew around here yet-- still preferring to stick to their puppets for company. But those he did know were a comforting sight nonetheless.

So when you’ve already searched through a jewelry store, there’s no real reason to go back, right? Wrong. It is always a good time to look at shiny objects. Look at all these sparkly things. Mitsuo is having a good time in this jewelry store.

The watches all look pretty cool, but since they apparently can’t tell time now they’re as good as broken. Sadness. Might as well ignore them and focus on the other sparklies! And by focus I mean Mitsuo is seeing how many necklaces and rings he can put on at once.

The answer is too many. Humanity spent so much time asking if it could, we never stopped to wonder if we should… and now Mitsuo looks like a walking jewelry display case. He was neon before but now he’s basically a disco ball. Too much bling.

He’s not actually intending to wear all this out and about, it’s just kind of fun to pile it on. He feels like some ridiculous billionaire diva or something. He probably looks like one too. Someone stop this boy.

Does he even notice anyone else entering the shop? Probably not. Would he be embarrassed? Probably not. What is shame, Mitsuo does not know.
