so silly. he should know better, saying such a thing was like, telling her to do exactly that thing. reverse psychology, much ? and so she twisted her whole torso in her suit to face the shadow that'd been lurking in the corner of the cafe. she smiled. that sweet, inviting smile of hers. waved, even. it did nothing to provoke the person in attention but she turned back to face her best pal, her confidante, and tilted her head to the side skeptically, “ he doesn't seem like no one. he has kind eyes. i think. it was covered by his bangs but he's so cute, you should totally say something to him if he's making eyeballs over here ! we're young and the night is also young ! ” she stopped herself before she corrected, “ ghosts can have fun, i mean — he's a ghost right ? or is he like me ? ”

the questions were spilling with ease as she pulled her milkshake closer to take a ship from the straw, the artificial flavor of strawberries filling her tastebuds. “ who is this person, edwin ? i need the tea. ”

carnival music blasted in distorted bursts through broken speakers — she'd stopped wondering how they could work when they were decades old and started accepting it was just the mechanisms of all things ghostly and supernatural and ... honestly, just a teensy bit scary. niko tried, really. like, really tried. when they got the case, she was elated, overjoyed that it was centered around a part of town where fun was meant to be an overarching theme but instead they were met with the exact opposite, in which time and tragedy had left its mark. maybe she shouldn't have run after the twins dressed as dolls, because then maybe she wouldn't have gotten lost in the funhouse. and then maybe she wouldn't have been followed in, now shoulders - to - shoulders with charles as they maneuvered a walking nightmare of a trip.

“ i know time can be an illusion ... ” she started, tone gentle despite the fear rising within her as they moved towards another totally inconspicuous path ! “ but that was five minutes ago. and you're never dumb. ” she paused as she stepped over broken glass. “ do you think this is like ... a trap ? like, some sorta magical trap where we don't know it's a maze ? oh. ” she reached out to squeeze his arm. tightly. bottom lip quivering as she squeaks, “ if we're stuck here forever — and i forgot to tell jenny her hair was really pretty today ! ”

some post s1 ending thoughts ...

niko's body is dead. but niko is alive and stuck somewhere in limbo or some astral plane. i love the detail of the sprites being with her because it indicates that they're now apart of her whether they like it or not — the brief parasitism they had with niko has bonded them and to me, there's a lot to play with here as we have zero information on the sprites as a whole. sprites as a general entity across lore varies by culture, so there's a lot to work with here :p

for now, i kind of see the sprites as niko's little buddies. kind of like her conscience on her shoulders, but they help her navigate the worlds and sort of behave as her ( deeply reluctant ) bodyguards ( or guard dogs lbr. they bite ). niko has definitely inherited powers of some form but she has no clue how to use them nor does she understand them entirely, but just working off of the sprites, they work in the same sense of needing to "feed" on attention, which niko is already p good at getting lbr.

some plot points could be niko attempting to get contact crystal, maybe charles or edwin if we consider astral projection. which could be silly and spooky, stuff moving; weather changing; phones ringing; because she can't get it together. idk. niko <3
