If you had heard in 2019 that a viral infection would bring this country to its knees, you probably would not have believed it. Now that we have some hindsight due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you might be more open to the possibility that we are not immune to pandemics in this country.
For the moment, let’s assume that COVID-19 is a purely natural phenomenon, like most other viruses. How might our present situation be different if it was actually engineered as a bioweapon? Instead of a 1% - 4% fatality rate, what if it was closer to 20%, or even 30%? Extrapolating our current reported infection rates, the death toll would top one million Americans in about six months following the first infection.
Enter the age of biowarfare. The purpose of warfare is to exert one nation’s will upon another through adversarial, often violent, means. Warfare does not occur in far-off lands, away from civilian populations—it occurs in the cities and communities of real people. The civilian population becomes unwilling participants in a struggle for dominance, assertions of sovereignty or independence, or claims to land or other resources. Barring terrorist events, Americans have been mostly sheltered from this reality since World War II; however, the resurgence of first-world power contention makes warfare on American soil a real possibility. And this war will not be fought with only bombs and bullets.
Western society places a higher value on individual human life, moreso than nearly any other culture in history. We expect our leadership to safeguard our life and liberty, and we hold them accountable when either becomes threatened. For their part, our leaders make daily decisions that balance the life and liberty of the few, with the good of the whole, to ensure the continued well-being of the country.
Let us return to the hypothetical biowarfare scenario, with the fictional country of Brunellia. The Brunelli government is attempting to reclaim its sovereign lands from separatists, and the U.S. government blocks its advances through military protection and diplomatic sanctions. Brunellia cannot hope to defeat us in a military engagement, so they look for other means to persuade our government to cease interference. In their research laboratories, they develop a highly-infectious and highly-lethal virus named COVID-21. They also develop and test a vaccine, and covertly immunize their own population.
Within the first three months, the American death toll reaches 500,000, with many other countries facing their own rising infection rates. This is when the Brunelli government announces that a vaccine is available, but will only share it with the world if the U.S. government withdraws all forces and ceases all actions to impede the reclamation of sovereign territory. The American public implores the President to stop meddling in foreign matters and protect American lives. The international community decries American intervention into a regional struggle. Brunellia has now become the most powerful, and hated, country in the world, as it literally holds the keys to life.
Hopefully, these fictional events do not sound too implausible to us now. How do we, as a population, develop resilience to such a scenario? How can we avoid becoming unwitting pawns in an international struggle for power? COVID-19 has taught us some hard-learned lessons regarding personal hygiene, interpersonal interactions, and quarantine procedures. The more dangerous a bioweapon is, the more draconian our countermeasures need to become. In the worst-case scenarios, I would expect to see police and military enforcement of curfews, quarantine monitoring, and a redefinition of what “essential” means. The only way to stop the spread is to…. stop the spread. Or at least slow it down enough to give our leaders some time and decision space on how to properly respond to this new enemy. And we all weather the war until we develop our own treatment, or we simply capitulate to our adversary’s demands.
“Essential services” become power, water, waste disposal, telecommunications, and vital food pickup only, and all financial transactions are put on hold. For preppers and stockpilers, as well as those who thrive living off the grid, this should not be much of a challenge: you’ve already achieved a level of self-sufficiency that enables you to sustain a long winter indoors. You are part of the solution, not part of the problem. We can’t say the same for most people, however, so our government would inevitably enact some form of communist (the benevolent type) care and feeding program for the majority of the population. Biowarfare is a matter of endurance and discipline, and now is your time to prepare.
By the way, if you happen to be on city water, how secure do you feel now?
