“You liking LA?” Buck asks, something careful about it. 

Eddie hums with a small nod. “It’s… I think it’s good for us.”

“That’s good. You… you should stick around.”

He’s not looking at Eddie when he says it, focused very intently on his sandwich and then the straw in his drink and then over his shoulder at the order counter. 

“You think?” Eddie asks, a small smiling growing as he leans back in his chair and watches him squirm. It’s interesting, how quickly Buck can flip from angry and terse to goofy to sheepish and back again. He’s an interesting guy. 

“Yeah, sure, why not,” Buck shrugs, takes a massive bite, and then finally looks up at Eddie to most certainly see the smugness he can’t deny himself at having pretty succinctly won Buck over. 

In spite of everything, in spite of the things which link them and can’t ever be shaken, despite how those things are tragedies plain and simple, they share a meal on the tail end of sharing a big and explosive win. 

“Sure, why not,” Eddie repeats back at him, arms crossed and head wobbling side to side in mocking. 

Buck scowls, his cheeks go pink, he takes another bite. 

“Fuck off, Diaz,” he says, “you’re still a meathead army medic and nobody likes you.” 

Eddie laughs. He steals Buck’s drink for a sip without getting so much as a slap on the wrist.

i am literally going crazy over buck finally, finally getting to just walk into the diaz house. no knocking and waiting for eddie to open the door. just. hey i need you. walks right in. this is eddie's house i'm not really a guest. i can fall alseep on your couch but not my own. this is my sanctuary. this is the only place that's ever felt like home. please don't ask me how i am. i could sit in silence with you forever. hey what's this? new homes? well okay sure just as long as you keep the couch and cut me a key. el paso? texas?

i really. like. fuck. every time i think about "how will you breathe" "i'm gonna hold it" "for how long?" "as long as i can". i just can't help thinking that buck desperately needs an nde where eddie has to give him mouth to mouth. i'm sorry. i'm SORRY. but it needs to happen. it does. he's done so much work and he's come so far but he's still stuck in this hamster wheel of relationships. he needs to breathe. and god. what better way to breathe than inhaling love and devotion someone is feeding you directly. than inhaling the love and devotion of the man you love most in the world. and waking up still delirious from the pain and thinking this is the second time i've tasted him tainted by death, i'd like to taste his life. meanwhile eddie can never breathe again because the first time he kissed buck now and always will be when he followed him into the underworld just to drag him right back out again.

please join me in some imagery for a moment my friends come hold my hand. i am picturing. post-buddie canon. they are doing secret relationship for an episode.

and the whole episode they're like BARELY managing to keep the secret they keep getting Almost caught through various Situations and Hijinks (since this is 9-1-1 there's another plot going on and a bunch of different calls and the buddie stuff is sorta B-plot simmering in the background). but they successfully hide it the whole time and we're now in the final five minutes of the episode. they're having a cute kitchen moment at eddie's house and they kiss. things start getting a bit steamy and eddie pushes buck back onto the dining table (this is in a medium close-up they're both in profile) then we cut to buck (close-up) grinning up at eddie clearly thrilled at being manhandled. cut back to the medium close-up you can't actually see the table itself but you can see their bodies as eddie climbs on top of buck and leans down and their lips are a hair's breadth apart—

then with a loud snap and a crash, they drop out of frame entirely. cut to the black call screen, "9-1-1, what's your emergency?"

buck's voice. "maddie?"

maddie's voice. "buck?"

buck's voice. "shi—"

cut to black end of episode. thank you for coming on this journey with me love u all xoxo hugs and kisses <3

well because that’s the difference between them, isn’t it. buck enthusiastically dates people who are bad for him and throws himself into these relationships as a way to create a sense of identity for himself. and eddie is miserable about dating people who are essentially perfect for him, because they’re perfect for the false identity that he is always desperately trying to project out into the world. ugh
