WHY WE DROPPED THE NEW BRANDS | The Wonder Shop Vintage & Virgin

Going along with the pun, the short answer is, the new brands weren't so pure.

I've personally gone through some big changes since we opened in 2011. I've adjusted my inventory to keep in line with my values. This video from AJ+ explains some of the reasons we no longer carry new clothing.

In addition to those, here are a few other specifics:

Polyester is made from coal, air, water, and petroleum, and isn't biodegradable. We have plenty of polyester from the 70s, no need to make more.

The natural fibers are rarely organic, if they are, they're expensive.

Everything comes individually wrapped in plastic from the factories. Think about the mall, every piece of clothing comes to the retailers in plastic bags. Recycling isn't the answer and can't keep up with our consumption.

The demand for cheaper clothes creates a pricing battle among factories that already have unethical labor and sourcing practices. Our conveinence comes with a big cost.

In trying to get information from my own brands about the factories, there was too much uncertainty. The transparency just wasn't there. Some had reassuring information, but then I also stopped buying new leather products, particularly shoes. Leather is rarely second-sourced. Meaning they aren't working with animals discarded from the meat industry, which is another industry I choose not to support.

When you think about pollution, you rarely think of the clothes on your back.

RECIPE FEATURE // Millet-Quinoa Vegan Pancakes! 

No packaging waste pancakes are possible by shopping the bulk bins with your own containers. This recipe is super easy, soak the grains overnight, and throw in a blender with a handful of other ingredients in the morning.

Pancake recipe by our friends from GRUB and ingredients from our local food cooperative, Tidal Creek Co-op.

Vegan Tip: FLAX EGG is an excellent binder and egg replacer for many recipes, that I used it all the time in veggie patties. Ground flax is an great source of omega 3s.

 Grind 1 Tbl whole flax seeds in coffee or spice grinder.



 Add 3 Tbl water and let set up in the fridge for 10-15 minutes.
