Marvel making Sam Wilson become Captain America has just highlighted the absolutely impossible standard a lot of you guys hold black characters to in order for them to be loved. He is literally the perfect character/superhero:

- Compassionate

- Witty

- Passionate about the legacy of the people behind the original Agengers

- Constant desire to help people be better (Bucky, Joaquin, even John and Karli)

- Traumatic backstory did not make him meaner but more driven

- Willing to put himself in harms way to help others

- Able to see beyond people’s exterior to see a better side of them

- Literally able to get along with everyone because he is just a very open person

- Honestly just very few flaws like this man embodies pure goodness wholeheartedly

If he can be all of this and still be called selfish or still garner so much hate, then how are people of colour meant to feel welcomed into this franchise. When characters like Tony Stark, Peter Quill, Stephen Strange, Thor Odinson etc. are allowed to be flawed and arrogant without their worthiness being a topic of discussion, the deeprooted racism of many Marvel fans is really brought to the surface.

If I had a nickel for everytime I’ve greatly enjoyed a flawed and realistic and desperately ambitious character who very clearly is not a bad person at heart yet who was exploited by others for their abilities and ended up being responsible for the death of one singular person, yet visceral haters in the fandom spaces view them as an irredeemable monster who committed the greatest sins known to man in the entirety of the MCU and claim that they can only ever be viewed in relation to a no longer existing person in the MCU and not given agency as a separate character nor given any kind of understanding as to the circumstances that led up to the death of that person that they are responsible for killing, I would have 2 nickels.

Which isn’t alot, but it’s odd that it happened twice. It’s really fun enjoying John Walker and Riri Williams as characters when you don’t have a nasty bum in your ear whining about how they’re apparently the worst characters existing in this universe and the only two who have ever killed anyone ever.

anyways, John and Riri get behind me I’ll protect you from the low reading comprehension haters and the folks who clearly don’t understand how PTSD, anxiety and desperation and grief after the traumatic death of a close friend jusssst might influence how you act in certain situations.
