Happy Juneteenth! I love learning, but the history of American slavery and its deeply-rooted connection to modern life has been watered way down. This is why I created the audiovisual #JuneteenthSyllabus. It’s a list of podcast episodes (organized into a downloadable Spotify playlist), documentaries, YouTube videos, and recorded interviews of people who were formerly enslaved. 🎧 I wanted to hear storytelling from smart people about lesser-known but historically accurate events & people connected to American slavery—like: ⭐️ Ona Judge, who was enslaved by George Washington and outsmarted him and his family to get her freedom ⭐️ Benjamin Montgomery, a formerly enslaved inventor in Mississippi who became one of the wealthiest planters in America (of any race) ⭐️ the +50 all-black towns in Oklahoma in the mid-19th century that had black oil barons, entrepreneurs of all types, and more concentrated wealth than many white communities only a short period of time after 1865. Balancing business and social justice allyship is part art and part science. . Nobody is going to have all of the right answers or words—we are balancing COVID-19, three months of #StayAtHome orders, and global unrest related to racism and police brutality. It’s hard out here. . But, just because it’s hard doesn’t mean we put our heads in the sand. . In my own business, I’ve spent some time contemplating how to maintain when I will not continue on with business as usual. . Gratitude 🙏🏾 is underrated, but it has helped me maintain my sanity during all kinds of troubling times. For me, here are three blessings in the storm: 1️⃣ Spending more QUALITY time with family ♥️. Typically, we are rushing each morning and so exhausted by the end of the day that the time we do get to spend together finds everyone on or near empty. Being at home all day, while certainly exhausting, has given me fresh eyes and experiences. 2️⃣ Rethinking what’s important. I’m definitely seeing that a lot of what I get worked up about just ain’t that important. And I’m learning that, yep, most meetings can definitely be an email 📧. 3️⃣ Exercising and doing yoga 🧘🏾‍♀️ during what is typically my morning commute. I love it! What about you? I know a lot of y’all have been wanting to start a business for a while (because you’re in my DMs telling me! 🙂). Social distancing is giving you the opportunity to actually get your thoughts together now. People often tell me that they want to start a business but don’t know what kind or where to start. IMO, there are 4 questions you can answer to get the ball rolling: 1️⃣ Why do you want to start a business? 2️⃣ How do you want to improve the world? 3️⃣ What do people ask you to help them with already? 4️⃣ In what ways do you enjoy helping people? No, it’s not rocket 🚀 science, but if you’re starting at ground 0️⃣ these questions will help you get organized. If you’re finding yourself with a lot of new time on your hands, don’t Netflix & Chill it all away. Start answering these questions so that you can pursue that business you’ve been wanting to start. Been watching #Quincy on @netflix and he’s easily the most interesting man in the world. This particular quote has stuck with me, which Mr. Jones talked about in Stockholm while being interviewed by his son. . . I thought this wisdom was so applicable to content creators. It’s easy to get caught up in, and addicted to, the likes, comments, and artificial validation of follower stats. . . This comment was a good reminder to me that only I—and not likes, follows and shares—control my self-worth. It’s been hard, but letting go of the fears around putting myself out there AND being 100% unemotional about my content have been two of the best things for me and my goals. . . Do you own what you post on social media? What about all of the other stuff you’re creating? . .
