Animation Fun Fact: Maple Town Monogatari & Sailor Moon

Most of us kids of the late 80’s might remember a cartoon by the name of Maple Town.  If you didn’t know, Maple Town was a Japanese cartoon, by the name of Maple Town Monogatari in Japan in 1986.  Toei Animation was responsible for it’s production, headed by series director Junichi Sato, who also later worked on Sailor Moon in 1992.

Some other well knowns were previously involved with Maple Town, including Kunihiko Ikuhara (director for both Sailor Moon, and Utena) and Masahiro Ando, who was the character designer for Maple Town, and an art director in Sailor Moon.

The screenshot of Usagi seen above is taken from episode 16 of Sailor Moon, which Ando did the art direction for.  And as you can see, Usagi is holding a plush version of Patty, Maple Town’s main character.  I remember noticing it right away when the English version of this episode aired, as I loved Maple Town as a child.

NAKAYOSHI 65th Anniversary

The book

The official catalog Nakayoshi Art Book for the 65 years of the magazine will be on sale starting September 28, 2019. The celebratory exhibition in Tokyo will be held from October 4 to December 25, 2019.

The book will feature some of the artwork that will be at the exhibition, as well as merchandise photos, covering series that have been published on Nakayoshi from 1954-2019. The titles include:
