I honestly don’t even know where to start, so I’m just going to write what I’m feeling, so this will probably be a REEEEEAAAALLY long post. And that’s okay, because this is mostly for myself, as well as for him.

So when I woke up from my nap this afternoon, I saw a notification on my phone about SHINee’s Jonghyun. Naturally, I thought, “Oooooh, another dating scandal.” So when I read the headline, I was.. shocked? surprised? confused? I didn’t really believe it, and I thought it was just another rumour that the press had blown up... And though it’s been a couple of hours, and I’ve cried my eyes out, I still don’t feel like it’s completely hit me yet.

My heart goes out to everyone. Jonghyun’s family, friends, and every single Shawol out there. I also hope and pray that the other four members stay strong through this. I myself am a Jonghyun-biased Shawol, and this has broken my heart. Right now, I’m in the Cape, in South Africa, but I’m originally from Namibia. So believe me when I say that there were SOOOOOO many people around the world who absolutely adored Jonghyun (and SHINee). 

This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this; losing someone I admire so much, having only discovered Kpop in June 2016. I also think that other than Ladies’ Code’s EunB and Rise, this has been the first really huge idol death. It was so unexpected. This all kind of feels like a bad dream. I feel kind of.. numb. I’m trying to continue with my day, but I can’t seem to find the motivation. My mind keeps going back to it.

I hope people will not remember him as the Kpop idol who died as he did, whose pain we could not see, but rather as BLING BLING of SHINee, as the one who fell while krumping, and as the amazingly hard-working, talented, silly singer, who was living his dream and spreading his passion. As one of the biggest advocates of the LGBT community and mental illness, in a country ignorant and critical of these things. I think he was an inspiration to millions of people who were going through their own personal hurdles, including myself.

I won’t talk about why it happened, because I don’t want to think about the negative right now. Maybe another day... What I do know though, is that I remember my mom telling me a long time ago that if you commit suicide, you go straight to hell. Now that I think about it, I don’t believe that at all. I think it’s much more complicated than that. I believe that Jjong is happier now, and that he is the main vocal in the choir of angels. SHINee will always be five. He will forever be a part of them, and he will always live in the hearts of all Shawols and everyone who knew him. I hope he is in a better place now.

I also want to discuss a positive thing I’ve seen happening. On so many social media platforms, I have noticed that fandoms that generally fight come together to support Shawols. I also see that, not only are we supporting each other as fans, but also as people. I think, in the last hour, I have seen the suicide hotline post on Tumblr at least 15 times. It breaks my heart that there are people, some of whom may read this post, that may resort to self-harm. Please don’t. There is always someone to talk to. If you can’t find anyone you trust in person, my ask box is always open.

Please stay strong and keep supporting each other. Remember it’s okay to cry, no matter what anyone says. It’s okay not to be okay right now. I know I’m not. But I will be. And so will you. Just keep fighting.
