The woman on the right side might be Angela if we go by what Sakaguchi said in the interview while the dude in middle is male-Terra.
Nomura’s FFVI Drawing
I’ll be dedicating the next few days to smaller details, since the next big one is pretty big.
I’ve labeled the Nomura drawing, because there’s another cut character in it.
The drawing is easily found in the “FFVI Concept Art” page of the FF Wiki under “Tetsuya Nomura character artworks”.
Lara is Strago’s wife. The explanation of her existence is found in the 1994 V-Jump Interview I’ve linked here!
This drawing was found around 2013 or a little before, which is important because the ‘94 V-Jump interview literally states that Terra was a male character. Many people who shared this pic believed the interview over the fact that Terra is on the right side of the drawing, clearly female!
They also made everyone believe that the cut main character was Squall, but this is just the design they used for him (i.e. ”cut from the same cloth”), not Squall himself…but that story is a bit long (it involves Rinoa)~
Terra here also wears the same getup as the FF7 Loveless girl. This version of Terra may be the one found in some concept art that has long hair, but no ponytail. The sprite sheet of “short-haired Terra” was saved on June 25, 1993 at 11:20 PM.
That’s a whole 9 months before FF6′s release! FF5 was released 7 months before this sprite sheet was made. Nomura’s drawing must have come later, and I do recall another interview which stated that the World of Ruin wasn’t made (or even planned) until around the time they finished the World of Balance, so this drawing may be from late 1993.
Gau is a bit of a mystery since he looks older. Cloud is similar to Celes (he even has the ear piercing that’s in Celes’ ear), but there’s a sub-story in FF7 about Soldier being “monsters”. Cloud’s story on the other hand is very similar to Terra’s, so separating the two characters and wondering which one was the esper and what the other would have been took a bit of time. At this moment, the evidence that this “Gau” is the cut main character’s esper form is very, very thin. Nomura drew Esper Terra rather similarly to Gau, but it may have just been a coincidence.
