It had been a lovely evening. The loveliest one either of them could remember, in fact.
They had spent the last few precious hours together, talking and walking aimlessly among the vast fields that surrounded the castle, both reveling in the unique opportunity to have some time alone.
But the night was advancing fast, reminding them of the all-too fleeting quality of this moment, and they both knew they would have to return to their respective occupations sooner or later.
“I had a most wonderful time in your company,” Peach eventually told her friend, turning to him somewhat regretfully. “Thank you, Mario.”
“Likewise, Princess,” he returned, smiling back. But the sentiment of levity was short-lived.
There was something he wanted to do. Something he wanted to tell her. It had been on his mind ever since he had first met her, and it had grown steadily stronger everyday.
Mario took off his cap, bowing slowly before her. There was no trace of hesitation to his demeanor; only a visible hint of nervousness that Peach found both intriguing and immensely endearing. Mario swallowed, and in one last effort to rein in his nerves, he took a deep breath. Then, reaching forward, he delicately took her gloved hand in his and closed his eyes.
“Il mio cuore è tuo,” he murmured in parting, pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles.
The gesture was so gentle and light that it barely registered, but Peach’s heart threatened to burst all the same. She was temporarily speechless, and only regained her voice when Mario straightened again.
“It’s beautiful,” she sighed waveringly, overwhelmed with a blazing affection for him. The emotion was so strong it was almost painful, and she fought the inexplicable urge to cry when their eyes met once more.
Mario released her, his movement measured and reverent, but he didn’t elaborate. There was a shadow of something vulnerable and sad shimmering in his bright blue irises.
“What does it mean?” Peach ventured, searching his face in earnest.
The pause he gave to her inquiry seemed to last for a small eternity, until he finally placed his hat atop his head again and gave her a wistful look.
“Maybe… One day… I will find the courage to translate,” he told her simply, his tone holding the fragile but resolute promise that he would try.

“My heart is yours.” 💝🎆
