Don't panic if Trump takes an early lead. That's a phenomenon called the "red mirage" and happens because the Election Day in-person votes are counted first, and the early, provisional, and absentee votes counted afterwards. The Democrat counterpart, when the early and mailed votes are counted first, is called the "blue shift."

People who vote in-person on election day are more likely to vote Republican, while people who vote early, absentee, and/or provisionally are more likely to vote Democrat. So initial results don't necessarily hint at the rest of the race, and who takes the lead early on can just depend which votes the state counts first.

So don't panic yet. It's still early anyway, and the race won't be called until probably Thursday.

i want to give a refresher to my american friends ( and anxious non yanks ) of what happened in 2020 with swing states. they all ended blue because of mail ballots and recounts

I know things don't feel good right now, but you're here; we're all here, and need to do our best to survive and empower each other as we can. It's a scary world, but we have small pieces of power we can join together.

Regardless of how this election goes, I really encourage y'all to either start or continue investing in your local communities. I'd recommend finding some non-profit communities that work to protect something that you want to invest time in. Follow them on Instagram, and follow other groups that they follow on Instagram to build up a community network.

As someone who has been getting involved in local politics and the arts & culture scene, it is still hard, but much more empowering being invested in improving something you can get directly involved in. Build up relationships with conservative people in public who seem like they could be talked to, cus they do exist. It might take a lot of time to talk through issues, and to gently challenge, but it's possible.

btw functionally for the US election today you are not picking your "hero" or whatever you are picking your opponent for the next four years because all presidents are bastards and they oppose the working class. you are simply selecting the one you can get the most ground on. this really helped reframe some stuff for me, hope this helps
