also bargaining as an episode title is one of my faves too bc. the literally willow bargaining with death itself to bring buffy back. here is the blood of spirit guide/angel/what have you here is my power give back what was taken from me give it BACK. and bargaining as a stage of grief that only happens after denial and anger. denial of buffy death being the repurposing of the buffybot. the thing that walks and talks like buffy but isnt. but hey it looks like her so its like shes not dead. anger is more felt as each character is angry with themselves. spike blaming himself for buffys death. willow blaming herself for not finding a solution to buffy being dead yet. leading to the bargaining. the rest of the season reckoning with the next step of depression, to finally reach acceptance at the finale. but man. bargaining. dawn pleading with buffy to stay alive and not jump again. please. please. please dont

One of the things I love about Buffy is that it presents knowledge and research as an absolutely vital part of the process of world saveage. So much of the show is dedicated to the characters sitting around doing research. And that’s pretty rare. Usually if research is a plot device in these kind of shows, it happens off screen. Which does kind of make sense on a storytelling level - it’s not usually that interesting to watch people look stuff up. But I really like that BtVS finds a way to make it interesting, not only because it leads to a lot of great group scenes, but also because it foregrounds the value of educating oneself about something before engaging with it. Which, you know, is an excellent value to foreground.
