On My Way To A Home Run I am weeks away from finishing my graduate school program. It has been the hardest and fear-inducing time of my life as grad student. Without the coping skills I have learned to practice and redirection of my own distorted thoughts, I would have succumbed to the stress. You know why I haven’t? There are many who encourage me unknowingly. And there are those who believed in me before I learned to believe in myself. If I give up now, not only will I disappoint myself but also those who have loved me and supported me. Let me tell you, my physical strength and will have been tested so much that I cannot honestly tell you how I am able to wake up in the morning and go about my day especially do my job. It is not intelligence, not education, nor is it genius or talent. It is unadulterated persistence and determination. Failure does not even enter the equation because it is not an option. A friend and I were talking last night about the struggles that made achieving our goals difficult to attain. There are many excuses bad, good, indifferent, that would exonerate our foreseen failures. But to what end? What we both agreed on is that perseverance and indefatigable “stick-to-it” tenacity is what it takes to get to the finish line. Calvin Coolidge articulated it so well in the following statement: "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” ~ Calvin Coolidge The world is swimming with genius-level and talented individuals who gave up on their abilities and dreams because the cause is not easy. There are multitudes with education who fail to use their knowledge and pomp and circumstance because persistence and determination cannot be learned. It just simply must be acted upon. Press-on my friends, press-on. It is the other thing that makes the world go round.
