actually what if dean remembering his rescue from hell was the key to rescuing cas from the empty. maybe to get a connection to the empty working, he needs to tap into his memory of his and cas' first meeting. and he can't remember it and is devastated. ofc sam and eileen find some kind of spell. maybe they even visit rowena in hell and she brings dean to the spot where he was gripped tight and raised from perdition. and it's the first time dean actually sees cas. And he remembers it now, being put together by this incomprehensible being. except dean knows cas now. and dean knows cas can hear dean's prayers anywhere.
