I believe in gender equality, especially how gender in society and media is portrayed. What I found most surprising this week i how women are responded to differently on social media when stating an opinion. The Race Swap podcast stood out to me the most; I couldn't believe the negative and degrading comments Mikki Kendall received on her Twitter posts as herself, and then when she changed her picture to a male, was treated with respect. It is proof that women are not treated with the same respect as men and it is shocking. After doing some research and looking deeper into the problem, I noticed a lot more similar responses to other women online. It is a problem that in increasing, but also one that is getting more attention, which it deserves. There are organizations like He for She which Emma Watson proudly is a part of. It stands for gender equality and that man and woman are equal and should treat each other equally and with respect. I am very glad for this movement and hope that we will all become more aware and act accordingly.

It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals. We should stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by who we are.
