“The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach.”

Shedding in a Winter Wonderland
Tumblr media
Winter sheds are so in right now.  Can you even imagine skiing out to this adorable little shed in the woods and getting all cozy?  I can just hear the beautiful muffled silence of this powdery location at this very moment.  A great addition to this scene would be folks in turtlenecks, adorned christmas vests, sub-par Norwegian accents, and the telling of wise tales amidst the crackling fire.  All while sipping on warm apres-ski hot toddies served in frosty the snowman mugs, but of course.  Shed love for winter wonderlands worldwide.

Put a boat on it!
Tumblr media
This shed brings me to tears...of laughter.  Built in Wales, UK, by a fabulous bloke named Kent Griswald (a nomenclature remarkably close to Clark Griswold, which makes this situation just better in so many ways).  The story is simple; he had a boat, he had a roofless shed...so he put a boat on it.  Brilliant! The shed is made from recycled materials, the windows from a 400 year old house and an old caravan. Corregated iron, wattle and daub, which is a mixture of woven wattle, mud, clay and straw and then covered with liberal coatings of thick bitumen paint.  Shed Love, has nothing but love for this boat shed.

Tiny house vs. Shed
Tumblr media
A few days ago, I watched the documentary "Tiny," which described the process of building a tiny house in Colorado.  It was awesome.  But it got me to thinking..."what is the real difference between a tiny house and a shed?" I will need to consult my architect mates for the technicalities.  But, does my shed fascination stem from an subliminal obsession with tiny houses?  I believe that it does. Furthermore, I will continue to address tiny houses as sheds and vice versa.  They are both small, rustic, and cozy.  I love them!

Mark Twain loved his shed.
Tumblr media
Mark Twain had a writing hut; he called it "the loveliest study you ever saw octagonal with a peaked roof, each face filled with a spacious window perched in complete isolation on the top of an elevation that commands leagues of valley and city and retreating ranges of distant blue hills. It is a cozy nest and just room in it for a sofa, table, and three or four chairs, and when the storms sweep down the remote valley and the lighting flashes behind the hills beyond and the rain beats upon the roof over my head—imagine the luxury of it."
I feel that he would have approved of this one...prayer flags or not.  Sheds rule.

Why do people want sheds? It's universal; almost the same reason people give for gardening. We're trying to return to the safety of our original nest. It's a visceral thing in our DNA. We're creating a safe haven in the middle of our chaotic lives. True story.

Hmm, shall we have a glass of wine or work on a gardening project?  Both.  Rustic elegance.
