WHAT THE FUCK IS HATOFUL BOYFRIEND

HATOFUL BOYFRIEND IS A DAting sim with bird characters. yes. birds. the playable character is a japanese human girl (default name: hiyoko tousaka) who goes to a bird school and interacts with the other students who are, well, birds. big birds who can speak and go to school. it doesnt make much sense right now and you’re probably laughing at the concept bUT there is an explanation for everything and you’ll find out later on in the game im not gonna spoil u before u play the thing

even though the game is presented as a dating sim and it plays like a regular otome game it’s not so much about dating as you’ll find out when you pick a bird to pursue. romance, mystery, comedy, heartbreak (tons of heartbreak) and fantasy await for you in hatoful boyfriend please play this thing

WHY THE FUCK SHOULD I PLAY THAT GAME

the game is BRILLIANT and well written and the plot is AWESOME even though as i said the concept wont make much sense at first. all characters are great and interesting and well developed and they all have backstories that will make you weep. like seriously you’ll fall in love with the characters 

and there is more to the game than the regular otome routes!!!!! once you complete certain routes you’ll unlock BBL (bad boy’s love), a much bigger, complete route where the game will turn itself on its head and lots of questions will be answered. this route will keep you on your toes it’s really something to look forward to when playing

WHO DO I GET TO DATE

the game has 8 pursuable bird datefriends, some routes only become available after completing certain routes first. all pursuable birdies have canon gijinkas so they can be drawn or imagined as people! (click their names for pictures)

ryouta kawara: a sickly and gentle rock dove who’s your childhood friend  nageki fujishiro: a quiet, mysterious mourning dove who’s always seen reading in the library kazuaki nanaki: the button quail teacher who tends to doze off a lot oko san: a very peculiar fantail pigeon who’s the track club captain and is always talking about pudding sakuya le bel shirogane: an aristocratic and elitist fantail pigeon who despises half-breeds yuuya sakazaki: sakuya’s fantail half-brother, an upperclassman and the school’s resident flirt shuu iwamine: a creepy chukar partridge doctor who works in the school infirmary anghel higure: an eccentric luzon bleeding-heart pigeon who claims to be a fallen angel

her name is hato moa and shes really radical thats p much all i gotta say about her

she really loves birds and the character oko san is based off her irl pet pigeon of the same name

shes a very talented artist and is very nice to the hatoful fanbase on tumblr, she even lets the fans participate in the games in many ways such as by opening a questions & answers on her website that ended being build into holistar and asking people for photos of their pet birds for possible future hatoful characters!

ANYTHING ELSE????

YES. the game has a sequel named holiday star, or holistar for short. It works in a different way than its prequel, having linear playable chapters instead of multiple separate routes. it also has special unlockable mini episodes with parallel stories, including a chapter where you get to go on a date with the birdies in their human forms!

there are also hatoful boyfriend drama cds, books, mangas and merchandise! not to mention a rad canon fantasy au thats right theres an au drawn by moa herself where everyone is a rpg character in cool clothes with cool magical powers (it also ties in with the main story but you’ll see it by yourself when you play the game)

OK CAN I PLAY IT ON MY COMPUTER

the game usually runs on windows computers and older macs without problems, but here you can find some fixes for windows vista and 7 if you happen to run into them

newer mac versions are a little more complicated though, you’ll need to follow a few steps (this or this, there are probably other ways to do it) to make the game playable. trust me its worth it

the games are cheap and really underpriced in my opinion, they’re worth every cent and much more and i highly recommend them.

you can also download the demo versions for either game for free, they can be found here & here! it’s a good idea to download the demo first anyway just to confirm that the game is playable on your system before buying the full versions

THATS A GOOD QUESTION ACTUALLY BUT THE FACT IS hatoful boyfriend despite being accessible and one of the best games ive ever played isnt as popular as it deserves to be and it often gets looked at as a joke because of the odd concept. itd be cool to let people know about this game and about how radical it is because im serious you’ll laugh at first and then cry because this game is anything but a joke

id be happy to see people trying it out and supporting the author because she honestly deserves it! so if you havent played hatoful and are looking for a new thing to get into itd be a nice idea to spend those few bucks left from the holidays on it and if you have already played it itd be cool if you could reblog this to spread the word. thank you & i hope you all had nice holidays hatofriends
