Poetry predates written language as an art form. It is thought that the oldest poetry was repeated or sung as a manner of memorising oral history, ancestry, and legislation. The earliest poetry existed in the form of hymns (such as the work of Sumerian priestess Enheduanna) and other types of song, such as chants, and is typically intimately tied to musical traditions. Poetry is thus a linguistic art. Many of the ancient world's poems are recorded prayers or stories about religious subjects, but they also include historical descriptions, directions for daily activities, love songs, and fiction.

Many academics, especially those who study the Homeric legacy and Balkan oral epics, believe that early writing bears clear remnants of older oral traditions, such as the use of repeated phrases as building blocks in larger poetic units. Many prehistoric and ancient writings, from the Vedas (1500 - 1000 BC) to the Odyssey (800 - 675 BC), appear to have been written in poetry style to help memorization and oral transmission.  The earliest records of most literate cultures include poetry.

Poetry has a long history in Africa, with hunting poetry extending back to prehistoric times, while panegyric and elegiac court poetry evolved significantly throughout the history of the Nile, Niger, and Volta river valley empires.  The Pyramid Texts, written in the 25th century BC, include some of Africa's earliest recorded poetry, while the Epic of Sundiata is one of the most well-known instances of griot court poetry. Performance poetry is traditionally an element of theatrics in African civilizations, which was present in all parts of pre-colonial African life  and whose dramatic ceremonies had a variety of purposes, including political and educational.

 The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor, written in Hieratic and dated approximately 2500 B.C.E., is the oldest known speculative fiction poetry. Other accounts attribute the earliest written poetry to the cuneiform Epic of Gilgamesh; nevertheless, The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor most certainly predates Gilgamesh by half a millennium. Apart from the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Greek epics Iliad and Odyssey, as well as the Indian Sanskrit epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, are the oldest works of epic poetry. According to some experts, either the Mahabharata or the Tibetan Epic of King Gesar is the world's longest epic poem.
