George Floyd wasn’t killed for just being a black man. He was killed for being a black man in a white supremacist, anti-black society.
This is not just a black people’s issue. This is an issue that affects our entire society. This is an issue that affects everyone living in America.
Demand justice. Demand change.
Fight for justice. Fight for change.

Old Times Pt 1
heylo! sorry for being so inactive i was a busy girl and i rlly just couldn’t figure out how to continue the fics i started so i just made a whole new one XD anywayz i will get back to those until then ! feedback would be greatly appreciated! thanks for sticking around i love youuuuuuuu
YN climbed out her bedroom window and onto the roof of her house, letting out a small groan when she heard loud yelling downstairs. So much for a peaceful evening.
With a pizza box clutched in one hand and a light blanket in the other, she rushed her way to the front of her house. At first glance, the trek from YN’s bedroom window would seem tricky but she’d grown used to it. Every Thursday night for the past 4 years, YN’s roof had been the designated hang out spot for her and her neighbor. YN could probably do this blindfolded. She quickly set down the blanket and pizza box before lying down on the blanket too, staring up at the setting sky. It was the day before her high school graduation and YN’s body was pounding with emotions. Her nerves were on edge. She couldn’t wait to graduate and was excited for the next chapter of her life but was also anxious about starting college and leaving all her friends behind. Or rather her friends were all leaving her. They’d all chosen out of state schools that were hundreds of miles away while YN had opted for a school that was just a 30 minute drive. At least she still had Shawn. Shawn was her neighbor and she’d been his first new friend when he moved here the summer before their freshmen year. They’d been good friends ever since and although they didn’t hang out at school, being part of different crowds, Shawn and YN talked almost every day, whether it be in person, through text, or by writing on paper and pressing it up to their bedroom windows which were directly across from each other. Shawn had opted to dorm to get the “whole college experience” so YN was comforted by the fact that he’d always be on campus. Perhaps they could even hang out together once school started. Speaking of which, YN checked her phone to see the time. 7:15 PM. Shawn was only 15 minutes late to their standing hangout so YN didn’t think much of it. This was their last hangout as high schoolers and probably their last in a while since they’d be away all summer. YN and her family were going on vacation the first half of summer and Shawn was going on a road trip with his friends for the last half so this was kind of an important one to YN and probably to Shawn too. He was probably just caught up at work and running a little late. YN went back to looking up at the sky and perusing her thoughts. Another 15 minutes passed and it was starting to get chilly. YN walked back to her bedroom window to quickly grab a jacket. Texting Shawn probably would be a good idea too. Walking back to her spot on the front of the roof, YN unlocked her phone and started to type a message when she heard noise coming from her neighbor’s front yard. Shawn’s front yard specifically. He’s here! YN steadily made her way to the front of her house but stopped midway upon hearing multiple voices from Shawn’s yard. “Thanks for the ride man. I’ve been meaning to get my bike fixed.” Shawn yelled out and then YN heard a car door shut. “No problem!” another voice called out while another one yelled “Hurry up and change! We’re already late to the bonfire.” Bonfire? YN quickly ducked down behind the peak of her roof and peered up into Shawn’s yard. There was a truck packed with 3 boys and after a few minutes, Shawn jogged out of his house in swim trunks and a backpack slung over his back. “Your parents cool with you going out with us?” “Yeah.” Shawn shrugged. “It’s not like I had anything else to do today.” YN stayed hidden behind her roof until she was sure that Shawn and his friends had left. She quietly walked back to where she had placed the pizza box and blanket earlier in the evening, picked everything up, and returned to her bedroom. It was just another hangout, YN thought. There really wasn’t anything special about it. They’d been doing this every week for the past 4 years so it should’ve lost its charm but YN couldn’t help but feel hurt.  She pulled her blankets over her frame and shut her eyes. She’ll just call it an early night.
“YN! Honey! Do you have class today?”
YN groggily woke up to the sound of her mother calling from the kitchen downstairs. She let out a tired groan. She’d stayed up late last night to finish an essay but at least she got it done with. Sure she was feeling a bit sleep deprived but as soon as she submitted this essay in class, YN would finally be done with all of the finals from her first year of college.
She blindly reached around her bed to find her phone, letting out another frustrated groan when she heard it fall off her bed and onto the floor. YN tried to unlock her phone...but it wasn’t turning on.
YN cursed under her breath. She must’ve forgotten to charge it last night. YN plugged it into its charger and made her way to her restroom to get ready for school.
“YN! Aren’t you going to be late?”
Late? “What time is it Mom?”
“8:45.”
FUCK! Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?” YN yelled. Her class started at 9 AM.
Her mother muttered something unintelligible as she scrambled to the sink and hastily brushed her teeth before running back to her room and haphazardly throwing on clothes she found lying around her room before flying down the stairs and running to her car.
YN started the engine and was backing out of her driveway when she noticed her mom running out of the doorway...with YN’s backpack in her arms.
“Thanks Mom.” YN said sheepishly as she rolled down her windows so that her mom could push the backpack in.
Her mom simply laughed, threw out a quick “Love you,” and walked back into the house.
***
45 minutes later, because of course the one time YN had woken up late all year was also the day there was an insane amount of traffic and congestion, YN pulled into the school parking lot and sprinted out and to her class.
YN arrived, out of breath, just as students were beginning to file out of the lecture hall. She’d made it just in time. She could sneak in right now and slip her essay into the pile and everything would be alright.
“YN!” a voice called and she looked up to see her friend Belinda walking over. “Where were you? I’ve been texting you nonstop!”
“Sorry!” YN gasped in between breaths. “My phone died so my alarm didn’t go off. But it’s all good.” YN let out a weak smile and raised the hand that was grasping onto her paper. “Got here just in time to.” But that smile quickly washed off her face when she noticed Belinda’s concerned look.
“YN. He collected the essays at the beginning of class.”
***
YN made her way to the front of the hall where she saw another student deep in conversation with the professor. She took in a deep breathe to calm herself down and prepared what she was going to say. If he just checked her grades on all the other assignments for this class, he’d see that she was a stellar student. Today was just a slight slip up.
“Can I help you?”
She snapped out of her thoughts and saw that the professor and the other student were looking at her. “Uhh...I came late.” YN stuttered, holding up her essay. Very eloquent YN.
“You too?” her professor sighed.
YN’s eyes glanced to the other student and she looked rather frustrated. That didn’t bode well.
“Look, I can’t accept your essays. They were due at the beginning of class and I have a strict no tolerance late work policy.” YN’s face must’ve visibly fallen because her professor quickly laughed. “But...I am in a good mood so you two ladies can collaborate on a presentation responding to the essay prompt. Record the presentation and send it to me by midnight Sunday. How does that sound?”
The two girls nodded their heads in agreement and relief before walking out together.
“How do you want to do this? I’m Zara by the way.”
YN muttered a small sigh of relief. Yes! A partner who would take charge and wouldn’t leave YN to do all the work. She flashed Zara a small smile. “I’m YN! And we should start today. Plan today, film Saturday, and edit Sunday.”
Zara frowned. “I can’t do tonight...I’m having an end of the year party at my place.” she responded simply.
“Oh.” YN deadpanned. So Zara was probably the type to push all the work on YN. “When does it start?”
“7 ish”
“Was this your last class?”
“No. I have class until 12.”
“Same here. Can we meet after 12 and we can finish when you need to get ready for your party?” YN mentally patted herself on the back. There was no way Zara could get out of this.
“Yeah fine.” sighed. “Give me your number. We can meet at my house.”
***
YN pulled into Zara’s driveway where she was quickly rushed into a small room cramped in the very back of the house by the host herself.
“Look I have people coming over later to help me set up so I’ll be in and out a lot to check on them.” Zara said matter of factly as she sat beside YN and pulled out her laptop.
An hour in, a loud commotion came from the front of the house and Zara sprung to her feet to open the door for her friends. YN continued working on the presentation and didn’t notice how long Zara had been away until she was halfway through making the slideshow presentation.
She could hear laughter coming from outside of the room so she figured that she’d slip out quickly to remind Zara they had a presentation to work on. YN creaked the door open and peaked through the crack. She could see people gathered in the kitchen and as soon as she opened the door, YN was met with the aroma of pizza. YN took a few quick breaths to muster up some courage and confidently walked out to confront Zara.
“Uh hey, Zara. I got about halfway done with the presentation but I kinda need your help on it so whenever you’re free.” YN said as she walked into the other girl’s kitchen.
The conversation halted and everyone in the room turned to stare at YN. Suddenly quite self-conscious, YN’s eyes darted away from the others’ gaze and onto the pizza box on the counter.
“Do you want some pizza YN?” a gentle voice asked. A voice that definitely wasn’t Zara’s. A voice that was definitely male.
YN looked up and her face dropped. Standing on the other side of the counter was Shawn Mendes. Her ex-neighbor and ex-friend. The one who bailed on their last hangout. The one she hadn’t spoken a single word to since before their graduation.
“I’m good. Thanks.” YN responded coldly before shifting her body to face Zara. She didn’t have to shift far though since Zara was standing beside Shawn. In fact, his arm was slung around her shoulders. Interesting.
“Just join me when you’re done and I’ll be out of your way.” And with that YN walked back to the room she was in earlier and worked on the presentation with newfound rigor and focus. She just wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible and if that meant finishing without Zara, then so be it.
***
She stayed focused on her laptop screen when YN heard the door creak open. “I’m about done with the presentation so we can wrap this up probably within the hour and-“
“Hi YN.”
YN stopped typing to look up at Shawn who had just closed the door behind him. Now that they were both crammed into this room, YN could see that he’d changed quite a bit since they last saw each other. His hair was longer and curlier. He’d bulked up quite a bit. And...was that a piercing in his ear?
“Zara said you came over as soon as both of you got out of class so I’m assuming you haven’t eaten lunch yet...so I brought you pizza.” Shawn brought a plate out from behind his back and offered it to YN. “It was pepperoni but I know you don’t like that so I picked off all the pepperoni for you.” he added with a smile.
YN stared blankly at the plate and boy in front of her. Once upon a time she probably would’ve appreciated the offer and the fact that Shawn remembered how she liked her pizza but that was the old YN. She’s since changed. “Thanks but I’m not very hungry.” She started typing away and that was the only noise that filled the room for several moments until YN noticed that Shawn was still standing there.
She mustered up a weak smile. “I’m fine. Honest. I don’t really like pizza anyways.”
Shawn’s brows furrowed. “But cheese pizza is your favorite.”
“It WAS my favorite. Things changed.” YN went back to typing, hoping that Shawn got the hint to leave her alone.
Instead, he took a seat beside her. “So…” Shawn started. “Haven’t talked to you in a while.”
YN secretly rolled her eyes and gave a curt nod.
“Probably since the summer. Move in day maybe?”
“Graduation.” she corrected him.
He let out what YN would’ve described as a nervous laugh. “Yeah right. We probably saw each other-“
“No. It was graduation.” she cut in firmly. Or rather it was a couple days before graduation. They hadn’t even spoken to each other during their ceremony. But who was keeping track...Certainly not YN.
“Damn.” he whispered softly.
Another beat of quiet passed.
“How’s life been?”
“Good.”
“Oh...that’s good to hear. Where do you live now?”
“Other side of town.” YN paused before adding “I’m planning on staying with my dad this summer though.”
YN instantly regretted saying that. Saying that she’d be back in her old house this summer. The house that was right next to Shawn’s. It was like she was hoping to get to see Shawn and hang out with him again and that was far from the truth. She wanted to stay as far away from him as possible.
She quickly shut her laptop and rushed to put her belongings back in her backpack. “Look I think I’m gonna head back now. Can you tell Zara that I’ll finish the last few slides at home and we’ll text to meet tomorrow to film.”
“Wait-you’re not staying for the party?”
YN let out a quick laugh and shook her head. “Not really my thing. And I don’t really know Zara so I’d feel weird.”
“You know me though.”
She flashed Shawn a weird look, trying to get a read on if Shawn was being serious or not. They haven’t exchanged a single word in the past year and he was acting as if nothing had changed between them. As if they were still friends and neighbors.
“I’m good.” she smiled. YN walked out, muttered her goodbyes to Zara and her other friends who were all laughing at some joke, and got into her car.
***
It was now Saturday morning and Zara was expected to come over any moment now. YN finished up the slides last night and they both agreed to film at YN’s house since Zara’s place was probably a mess from the party last night.
She’d just finished setting up the mic when she heard a car pull up in her driveway.  YN peeked her head into the kitchen where her mother was cooking to announce that her partner was here and ask if she could open the door while YN ran to the restroom really quickly. When YN returned, she was shocked to see her mom and Zara sitting in the living room...with Shawn.
“YN! Oh great! You won’t believe who dropped Zara off. It’s been a while since I last saw you huh Shawn.”
She snapped out of her daze and sat beside her mom on the couch across from Zara and Shawn. “Yeah uh hi guys.”
“So do you guys see each other a lot at school?” her mother innocently asked.
“No. Not really.” YN answered in monotone.
“Yeah I guess we’ve just been busy. And it’s a big campus.” Shawn answered with a bit more inflection.
YN couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh, which pulled a frown from both her mom and Shawn.
“Anyways...I should get going. I just came to drop Zara off” he said before turning to Zara. “Text me when you’re about done.”
“Oh why don’t you stay and we can catch up Shawn! YN said the recording shouldn’t take more than an hour. It’ll save you the trip.”
Zara’s expression perked up at the suggestion and YN practically twisted her neck to shoot her mom a look that expressed “No. Why?”
“Uh if that’s fine with you that’d be great.” Shawn smiled.
“Great! I’ll get some snacks for you kids!” YN’s mom bustled out of the living room to grab whatever she could find in the kitchen, leaving YN, Shawn, and Zara alone.
After a couple seconds of the 3 of them just sitting there and staring at each other, Zara broke the silence. “So let’s hurry this up.”
YN and Zara worked quickly in another room while Shawn and her mom caught up in the living room. The loud laughter and conversation from the room did very little to distract the girls from recording. YN figured they were both eager to wrap up quickly and go on with their Saturday plans. After all, it was supposed to be summer break. Shawn and Zara were dressed to go to the beach or a pool party and YN had a date with her bed and Netflix.
“Okie I think that’s good. We just have to edit and then we’re done.” Zara declared confidently.
“Editing shouldn’t take too long either. Great job! How do you want editing to go? We can meet up or you edit one half and I edit the other half?”
“I don’t think we should split up the editing. It’ll just look and sound weird.”
YN nodded. “Good point. What time are you free tomorrow?”
Zara frowned. “The thing is...I’m not free tomorrow. I’m flying back home at 11 AM. And it’s a 6 hour flight.”
“Oh.” YN’s mind raced with ideas to work this out because there is no way in hell that she’d be editing this all by herself again. “Why don’t you just stay behind a bit. And we can edit together.”
“Shawn and I actually have plans.”
YN let out a frustrated sigh. She was really done with this and just wanted Shawn and Zara out of her house. “Fine. How about I finish editing today and then I’ll send it to you and you look over it before your flight?”
Her partner’s face instantly lit up at the suggestion. “Great! Look at us! Teamwork makes the dream work.” Zara picked up her laptop and made her way back to the living room with YN following in defeat.
“Done?” Shawn asked when he saw the two girls enter the room.
“Yep! YN just has to edit!” Zara answered excitedly as she slid into the seat beside Shawn.
Shawn flashed YN a smile to acknowledge her presence and noted her sullen expression. “Err Zara...are you editing too?”
“No. I have my flight tomorrow remember? YN is going to do it and then I’ll look over it before we turn it in. You wanna go now?”
He looked back at YN with concern. “Zara why don’t you stay and help edit for a while. We still got time and I’m still talking with Mrs…” Shawn’s eyes widened when he caught his mistake. “Sorry I mean Miss…”
YN’s mother simply laughed. “It’s alright Shawn! Just call me by my first name. We can skip all the formalities love.”
Shawn nodded and reverted his attention back to his girlfriend. “How does that sound?”
Zara shot Shawn a cold glare and begrudgingly got back up to help YN edit.
One hour later, the girls finished editing and decided to submit the assignment early just to get it over with. Zara returned to the living room with a smile, knowing that this time she and Shawn were definitely leaving.
“What are your plans for today?” YN’s mom inquired as she walked their guests to the door.
“We’re going to the beach today with some friends!” Zara responded with a smile.
“Oh that sounds nice! Have fun dears.” YN’s mom closed the door behind her and and then turned to YN.
“You going to ever tell me what happened between you and Shawn?” she asked with a raised brow.
“It’s nothing. We just stopped talking.”
“Mhm...well I hope you’re not busy today. I’m going to need you to run by the the farmer’s market to buy some food.”

The Tutor Pt 1
hi friends XD i kinda got this idea and i rlly like this fic so imma focus on this series rn instead of Not Even Friends if thats all right! i’ll go back to that series when i finish up with this one hehe any feedback would be greatly appreciated
The sun shined down warmly on YN as she strolled peacefully through the park and to her tutor’s apartment. It was the first warm day of the school year and YN took advantage of it, trading in her usual jeans and sweater combo for a flowy sundress. Jamming to the music that was playing through her earbuds, she didn’t notice the concerned shouts from behind her but it was already too late.
WHOMP
Something suddenly hit the back of her head. Hard. And YN fell to the floor from the momentum of the object and from pure shock. A bit dazed, YN could blurrily see someone offering her a hand to which she gratefully reached for.
“You okay?” a male voice asked, concern deeply etched into his voice.
“Yeah I think so. Wh-what was that?” she muttered clutching her head as she tried to focus and straighten her vision on her and the stranger’s feet.
“Football practice. I overshot the football and I tried warning you but…” the guy trailed off sheepishly. “Look do you want to go over to the field? There’s ice there and I’m just really sorry about that.”
When the world finally stopped spinning, YN looked up and was slightly blown away. Standing in front of her was an attractive, cool looking boy who was currently staring right into her eyes. Flustered, YN quickly shot her head down and a blush was quickly creeping up her cheeks.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he repeated before gently grasping YN’s wrists. “The field is down that way a bit, please come back there. I won’t feel right not knowing if you’re okay. Please.” he pleaded and YN was awestruck.
Here was a total stranger who was so visibly concerned with her wellbeing. She could feel her face getting even more red. Over a total stranger. Keeping her head ducked, YN started to walk off while nervously responding with a “No. I’m fine really. I have somewhere to be and I’m actually running late to that.”
YN couldn’t walk far though because the stranger was still holding onto her hands. She looked back with a smile that hopefully conveyed how okay and not flustered and embarrassed she was and the boy nodded before letting go.
“I’m Greyson by the way. Just swing by the football office if you ever feel weird in your head. Our coach can take a look at you.”
“YN. And uh I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.”
Greyson repeated her name aloud. “That’s a pretty name. Not as pretty as you though.” he grinned cheekily.
She was definitely sure that her face resembled a tomato at this point. YN stuttered a thanks and the two went on their separate ways.
***
YN rushed up the stairs to her tutor’s apartment. The incident at the park delayed her and she was now almost 15 minutes late. She’d only been seeing this tutor for a month but YN was super grateful for him. He’d already helped her math grade by so much and he hadn’t let her pay him for his services so she didn’t want to seem ungrateful by being late. He seemed like a busy guy who had better things to do than wait up on her.
She finally reached his door and rung the doorbell. With the chance of a quick break, YN leaned down slightly to rest her hands on her knees and take a quick breath. That sprint up the stairs made YN winded. As she leaned down, YN winced a bit. She gently touched the back of her head and felt a very large bump.
“Hey YN!” her tutor greeted her when he swung the door open. He flashed her a wide smile that quickly went away when he noticed the grimace on her face.
Her hands quickly flashed down when she gently pressed on the bump. “OW!”
“Shit YN. A-are you okay?” he stuttered.
She laughed it off as she walked past her tutor and took a seat on the floor next to his coffee table. “I’m fine Shawn.” YN reassured him lightheartedly. “A football just basically wiped me out in front of the whole park but no big deal.”
Shawn’s face went cold and his brow furrowed in concern and shock.
“I’m just joking with you.” she laughed deeply at his reaction. Her eyes were squeezed tight and she was clutching at her sides and didn’t notice the slight blush on her tutor’s cheeks as he stared at her, nothing but concern and care in his eyes.
“There’s just a slight bump.” she muttered. Her fingers brushed against the bump out of habit and she winced slightly before reaching into her backpack to pull out her notebook.
“Does it hurt a lot?” Shawn asked quietly as he kneeled beside her.
YN shook her head but Shawn noticed her tight grimace earlier. He always noticed things when it came to YN.
He got up and ran over to his kitchen to grab an ice pack. After wrapping it around a paper towel, he walked back to where YN was seated and held it out to her.
Preoccupied with the textbook problems in front of her, YN didn’t notice Shawn until he whispered a small “Take this.”
She looked up and flashed him a polite smile before accepting the ice pack. “Aw you’re so sweet Shawn. Thank you.”
Shawn nodded and took a seat beside YN on the floor. “Now, let’s talk about antiderivatives.”
***
“No way!” YN gasped as she doubled over in laughter.
“I’m serious. I didn’t know someone could ever get so heated over a strawberry smoothie.” Shawn chuckled.
The duo were taking a quick break from their tutoring session and were now seated next to each other on the couch trying to contain their laughter from Shawn’s story.
A loud commotion came from outside of the apartment and Shawn let out a deep sigh.
“You expecting someone?” YN asked. She leaned over his body on the couch to try to peer through the window but being her clumsy self, YN lost her balance and started to totter off the couch.
“WHOA WHOA” Shawn exclaimed as he slipped his arm around YN’s waist to pull her closer to him and prevent her from falling.
She giggled a thanks, giving him a friendly pat on the top of his head. Shawn held his breath from the closeness of her body pressed against his.
The jiggling of keys and the sound of the front door creaking open turned YN’s attention away from the boy she was practically sitting on top off.
“Hey Shawnie. Brought the team over for a bit” a familiar voice yelled from the doorway.
That voice. YN quickly got to her feet in time for a group of 5 or so boys to join her in the room, one of whom she’d just met.
“Greyson?” she asked incredulously as her soft gaze fell on him.
Upon recognizing her, Greyson flashed her a lopsided grin that YN found absolutely adorable and she nervously fixed her dress and hair.
“YN! What are you doing in my apartment?” Greyson asked earnestly, his eyes staring intensely at the girl in front of him
“Your apartment? This is Shawn’s apartment! He’s my math tutor.” YN looked down to Shawn who was still seated on the couch.
Shawn was at a lost of words. “H-how do you know each other?”
Greyson walked over to stand beside YN as the other boys hooted encouragement from the side. Edged on by his teammates’ hollers, Greyson gently strung his arm onto YN’s shoulders. He confidently retold the story and YN couldn’t help but release a giggle that had Greyson looking down on her with endearment while Shawn solemnly looked at the two.
“Shawnie here” Greyson pointed to the boy frozen on the couch, “has been my best friend since 8th grade.” He plopped down beside Shawn on the couch and gave him a hard, friendly pat on the back that had the boy wincing slightly in pain. “He’s been following me around since then.”
Shawn flashed YN a weak smile but she didn’t notice. She was captivated the boy sitting next to him instead. Her cheeks were just a light rosy color and her eyes traced Greyson’s every move and her lips were pressed in a small smile that never seemed to waver as long as Greyson continued to talk. He knew that look. It was the look he had for her.
“You okay Shawnie? You’re drooling a bit.” Greyson laughed and Shawn quickly wiped at the corner of his mouth.
“I’m joking!” the football player added as his teammates snickered at the poor boy.
“Sorry guys,” Shawn responded flatly. “I was actually in the middle of tutoring YN with her math homework so if you wouldn’t mind we’d-“
“It’s okay Shawn!” YN cut in earnestly, playing with the ends of her hair. She was talking to Shawn but her gaze was still fixed on Greyson. “Greyson looks tired so I’d best leave and let him relax.”
Shawn frowned at her response. “Are you sure? What if you still need help on the newer concepts?”
“Yeah YN. Stick around for dinner too. I make a mean spaghetti and meatballs.” Greyson added. “I’d really like it if you’d stay.”
YN however, was already packing up her bag. Greyson was barely doing anything and he already got her flustered and nervous. She had to get out of there before she did anything else to embarrass herself. “Maybe next time! Bye Greyson!”
He responded with a quick wave and YN was putting on her shoes and out of the door in no time.
“Bye YN.” Shawn muttered under his breath.
***
“Bro, what are the fucking odds that the hot girl from the park would be in your apartment!” one player exclaimed as the group of football teammates stockpiled into Greyson’s room.
“Throwing the football in her direction was the best move of the day. No of the entire week.” another boy added. “Gotta add that to the playbook fellas.”
The other boys voiced their shock and agreement and Greyson smirked.
“Was bummed the move didn’t bring YN back to the field with me but I’d take her randomly showing up at my house over that any day.”
The entire group laughed in response and some of them even patted him on the back.
“What’s the deal with your roomie though?”
Greyson’s face softened a bit at the mention of Shawn. “What do you mean?”
“Does he like the girl or something? They seemed pretty friendly when we first came in.”
“No way!” Greyson laughed, relieved that they weren’t saying anything rude about his friend. “YN said he’s just her tutor. And she’s not his type.”
***
The sound and deep aroma of sizzling meat lured Shawn out of his room and to his kitchen.
There he found his roommate and friend Greyson cooking their dinner while dancing along to One Direction music.
Shawn smiled silently to himself at the sight. Greyson and him had been practically inseparable. They were the closest of friends and Shawn knew Greyson better than anyone else, or at least better than anyone else on the football team. However, things changed and Greyson started to only hang out with his team and even stopped doing the old Greyson things that Shawn liked about him...like jamming to One Direction. It was nice to see his old best friend back.
“Shawnie! Come help me with this will ya.”
Greyson’s request snapped Shawn out of his thoughts and the boy walked over to help his friend prepare dinner, standing side by side in comfortable silence.
After the meal was plated, the pair sat by the kitchen counter and proceeded to eat their meals and talk about their days.
“How was training camp?” Shawn muffled in between mouthfuls of meat.
“Nice I guess. Hard but so worth it. Who knew a month in the mountains would help my performance so much. I PRed in…” Greyson went off on a passionate talk about his sport and training while Shawn remained silent. Greyson just assumed that his friend was listening intently. He was always the quiet one of the duo.
Shawn’s mind however, was the opposite of quiet. His mind was racing and he was slowly building up the courage to ask Greyson what he really meant to ask.
“H-Hey Grey. Can I ask you something?” Shawn stuttered.
The other boy stopped his talk on how much weight he’s been lifting and looked toward his roommate.
“D-do you like YN?”
Greyson silently stared at his friend for a few seconds but to Shawn, those seconds seemed to drag on like minutes.
“Do you like her?” Greyson retorted back.
Flustered, Shawn dropped his fork at the unexpected words. “What n-no. I barely even know her! But-“
“Thought so. She’s not your type.” the football player added flatly.
Shawn’s face dropped but his friend didn’t seem to notice. “Right.” he whispered quietly. “So you do like her?”
Greyson laughed at Shawn’s persistence. “Shawnie. I barely even know her. But she looks like she’ll be fun.”

Not Even Friends Pt 1
DING!
YN walked out of the elevator and was instantly bombarded with the busy noise of her office floor. People were answering calls, discussing current events, planning meetings, etc etc but everyone made it a point to greet YN. After all, she was presumed to be the new boss. YN was so close to getting that promotion she’d been working towards for 6 months and after that, she’d be the person in charge of the entire office. All she needed was one more successful project and she’d have the promotion in the bag.
YN flashed a friendly smile to everyone who stopped to talk as she made her way to her office. She got to work quickly, turning on her laptop and starting on the reports that needed analyzing. She was dedicated to her job, that was for sure. YN was always focused on the job and would never half-ass anything. It’s the reason why she was such a climber in the chain of command at her workplace, regardless of how young she was compared to her colleagues.
There was a light knock on YN’s office door and YN snapped out of her grind to see who it was.
“YN,” the secretary Katie called politely. “Ms. Nguyen would like to see you in her office now.”
YN let out a “thank you, please tell her I’ll be with her shortly.” before closing a door and breaking into a quick little happy dance. Was the promotion coming early?
YN walked into Ms. Nguyen’s office with a wide smile on her face.
“Hey YN!” the older woman rushed as she sat at her large desk looking through paperwork. “Take a seat. I want to talk about something important with you.”
YN obliged and sat in one of two armchairs across from Ms. Nguyen’s desk.
“So as you know, I’ll be transferring to another office abroad and I’ve been looking for a replacement to take over my position here.” she started and YN gave an attentive nod in response. “You’ve always been such a hard worker and have shown time and time again your dedication and capability so I knew right away that you’d be the perfect candidate but -”
YN’s mind went blank with joy and tuned out the rest of what Ms. Nguyen said. YES! Today was the day! She was finally getting that promotion and would finally be working her dream job!
“Yes thank you for the opportunity! I’ll definitely not let you down!” YN said earnestly.
The other woman shot her a confused look. “How’d you find out about the event already?”
Wait what. “Sorry, I must’ve misheard something you said, please continue.” YN corrected herself.
“Right so because you two are such strong candidates, you’ll both be attending the conference in 2 weeks to present some projects and I’ll decide based on your performances there.”
“Pardon?” YN started until she was interrupted by Ms. Nguyen’s door being opened.
“Sorry I’m late Tracy!” Shawn shuffled in and took a seat in the armchair beside YN without even acknowledging her. “Was caught up in a conversation and forgot the time.”
YN secretly rolled her eyes. Shawn started working at the office the same time as her and all she ever saw him do was talk to other people.
“No problem Shawn.” Ms. Nguyen giggled. YN couldn’t believe her eyes and ears. Ms. Nguyen was always serious around YN and YN could’ve sworn she’d only seen her smile on a few occasions but here her boss was...giggling.
“I was just telling YN what I told you yesterday about the conference.” Ms. Nguyen turned towards YN. “So are you up for it?”
Hey eyes went doe-eyed. Wait...Shawn was YN’s competition for the promotion? Shawn Mendes?
YN’s shock was apparent and Shawn smirked as he and Ms. Nguyen waited for her response.
“Uh yes yes. Thank you for the opportunity.” YN stuttered.
“Great, I’ll email you both the information. You can get back to work.” Ms. Nguyen dismissed them.
The two colleagues nodded and YN walked out before Shawn and headed straight for her office fuming.
“Hey YN” Shawn called from behind her.
She turned around and shot him a tight smile. “Yes Shawn” she responded with feigned sweetness.
“How mad are you that I’m the one that’s going to take your nice pretty promotion?” he teased, walking over to her and playing with the ends of her hair.
She shot him a warning glance. “I don’t know what you mean.” YN remarked innocently. “I’m happy that all of your hard work and dedication is paying off for you.”
Shawn let out a small chuckle and leaned down so that his lips were just barely ghosting over YN’s ears. “Mhm. Can’t wait to spend an entire weekend with you.” he whispered before walking away.
YN’s hands slapped up to hide her red, hot cheeks. Whether they were burning up from rage or embarrassment she wasn’t sure but she knew that it was because of Shawn. She stalked her way back to her office and sat back down to do her work but she couldn’t focus anymore.
Why Shawn? Ms. Nguyen could’ve chosen ANY other person in the office and they probably would’ve been more hard working and qualified than him. All he ever did was sit around and talk to other people. In fact...YN peered out of her office window to the general floor...yep there he was leaning against a desk and talking with another girl whilst playing with the hem of her shirt. That’s real appropriate.
YN thought that she was in a completely different league than Shawn and it offended her that she and Shawn were equals in Ms. Nguyen’s eyes. He didn’t take this job seriously like she did. The office was like a playground for him, a place to flirt and socialize. Not to mention the fact that he was a cocky, arrogant piece of shit. Plus, it wasn’t a secret that Shawn had slept with nearly every female in the office. YN didn’t keep up with the gossip but as far as she knew, it was only her, Ms. Nguyen, and their 45 year old secretary Katie left.
Whatever...she thought to herself. If Shawn was her only competition, she had the promotion in the bag.
***
“Shawn! YN! In my office!” Ms. Nguyen called out.
The two quickly made their ways towards their boss’ office and sat down in the same chairs they sat in last time. This time however, Ms. Nguyen sat herself on the armrest of Shawn’s chair.
“Just want to confirm the info for this trip with both of you.” the older woman declared formally as she flipped through a notepad with the information. “Your flights leave tomorrow at 9 AM. YN you’ll be staying in a hotel that the company booked but Shawn...I have it that you’ll be staying somewhere else. Is that correct?”
Shawn nodded. “Yeah I have a college friend in that area so I’ll be staying with him. Just to save the company some money.”
“Oh very smart Shawn. I’m impressed.” Ms. Nguyen complimented as she gave his shoulders a tight squeeze.
YN saw that the squeeze lingered a little too long and she raised her eyebrows at Shawn, who was visibly pleased at the compliment.
Oh...so that’s why he’s being considered for the promotion. YN cleared her throat to move along the meeting.
“All right don’t forget, you will each be presenting one individual project and then collaborate on a paired presentation for the bigger project. How has that been working for you two?”
They both gave a weak smile. YN’s independent presentation was coming along fine. In fact it was probably her best work thus far in her career. But the paired presentation was another story. She and Shawn had been putting it off for over a week now since they didn’t really want to work together and now the conference dates were coming up fast.
“Great. See you all next week then. I’m wishing you both all the luck.”
YN quickly walked out of the office and was followed by Shawn.
“Hey YN” he called from behind. “Wanna start on that presentation now?”
“Uh I’m kinda busy right now. Have to finish analyzing some stuff.”
Shawn frowned. “Can we do it tonight then? I don’t think we’ll have time to work on it once we land.”
Great. YN had planned on relaxing tonight but Shawn was right, they’d put off that presentation for too long now.
“Yeah sure. What time ?”
Shawn shuffled closer to her. “How about when we get off work? We can even do dinner and then go back to my place. You can even stay over.” he suggested with a wink. “Let’s go to the airport tomorrow together.”
“As if.” Here she thought that Shawn would finally keep the conversation professional and formal. But this was Shawn so of course he wouldn’t. “We’re going to work here at the office. We’ll just stay behind.”
“Yes ma’am!” Shawn saluted as YN walked back to her office.
***
“Ordered pizza for us.” Shawn announced when he barged into YN’s office holding a pizza box.
“Can you knock next time.” YN replied tensely as she set down the reports she was looking at. Her eyes lingered over the box. “Thanks though. What type is it?”
“Just plain ole cheese. Hope that’s all right. It’s my favorite.”
She smiled secretly to herself as she nodded. Cheese was her favorite too.
The two quickly got to work and finished the entire presentation within 2 hours. It was a nice change, seeing Shawn be productive for once. He and YN actually worked really well together.
“Okie now that that’s done all we have to do is lock the office up and then I’ll see you tomorrow” YN rushed as she packed her bags. She suddenly let out a gasp. “Shit. I forgot to ask Katie for the key. How are we supposed to lock up the place?”
Shawn laughed as he reached into his pocket and dangled a ring of keys. “No problem. I got us.”
YN helped Shawn lock up the office and they walked to their cars together, making quiet conversation as they went.
“Yknow you surprised me today Shawn.” YN laughed.
“Yeah. How so? Because I can surprise you in a lot of other ways too.”
“Over your dead body. But you can actually do stuff. Nice to know you’re not just a pretty face.”
“So you’re saying you think I have a pretty face.”
She gave him a playful slap. “Stop it.” she joked. “I mean it’s nice to see you actually work for once instead of flirt around with everyone in the office.” YN continued walking and didn’t notice that Shawn wasn’t beside her anymore.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Shawn asked quietly.
YN finally realized that Shawn wasn’t next to her so she stopped and turned around. He was just standing a few feet away from her with a frown etched on his face.
“Yknow what I mean.”
“No I don’t.” he said tensely but YN didn’t seem to notice.
“You’re always messing around and not working. Flirting around with Ms. Nguyen and the other people. I’m just saying you should focus more. You actually are pretty good at the job. You would get far with just your work. Don’t need people to like or be attracted to you for” YN trailed off when she finally noticed Shawn’s clenched fists.
“I do work. How do you think I got here. The same way you did. Unless you thought that...” he paused a bit before letting out a weak laugh. “You thought that I talked my way to this position didn’t you?” he asked coldly.
“No no. I never said that.” YN quickly corrected herself.
“Yeah but you thought it. You probably even think that I fucked my way here.”
“No Shawn...let me explain I-“
“Save it YN. It’s cool. I could care less about what you think of me. We were never friends or anything so it doesn’t bother me.” Shawn flashed YN a weak smile before walking off, leaving her in the parking lot.
***
YN sat down nervously in the seat on the plane. She wasn’t able to sleep at all last night. The guilt from her encounter with Shawn was eating away at her and she planned on apologizing as soon as she saw him.
She peered over to the empty seat right next to her. Everyone had already boarded but Shawn was nowhere to be seen.
Fuck. Is he that mad?
YN quickly flagged down a flight attendant. “Hi is there anyway we can delay departure? Just a little bit. My friend...er I mean colleague...isn’t here yet.”
The attendant slowly shook her head and YN gave an understanding nod.
She reached into her bag to find her phone and call Shawn.
“Excuse me.” a deep voice grumbled, causing YN to look up.
“Shawn!” she smiled. “I was worried that you ditched me to go by myself!”
“Can you please move a bit so I can get to my seat?” he asked in monotone.
“Yes of course.” YN shuffled in her seat to make room for Shawn. “Look I just wanted to apologize for what I said yest-“ YN started but stopped when she realized Shawn was wearing headphones and wasn’t paying attention to her.
They sat their flight in silence as YN repeatedly peered over at Shawn who refused to look in her direction at all.
***
YN leaned on her tiptoes to pull out her suitcase from the overhead bin. She gave it a big pull but it didn’t budge.
“Sorry it’s a little stuck!” she nervously chuckled at the growing line behind her that was waiting for her to grab her bags and move.
YN tried removing the suitcase again and let out a frustrated sigh. This was mortifying. She shot Shawn a pleading look but he didn’t seem to notice as he walked past her and towards the exit with his duffel bag already slung around his shoulder.
“Can someone help the girl for the love of god?” someone aggressively yelled from the back of the plane and more shouts joined.
YN looked down at her feet and bit back tears. Gosh why was she getting emotional over this. She felt someone nudge her shoulder as they leaned over her to help her with her suitcase.
She took a deep breath before looking up to thank the person for helping her but when she did look, there was nobody near her. Instead, she just saw Shawn’s back walking away from her, noticeably closer than before.
“Can you hurry up? We got places to go too!” another stranger yelled.
YN pulled up the handle on her suitcase and ran to catch up with Shawn. His long strides made that difficult and by the time she made it next to him, she was out of breath.
“Hey, thanks for helping me back there.”
Shawn just kept walking and didn’t spare the effort to look down at her until they reached the baggage claim.
“Who’s the guy we’re supposed to meet?” Shawn asked, eyes scanning their surroundings and avoiding YN’s.
“His names Ben. He’s the head of the office that’s based here. And can you quit ignoring me so that I can apologize to you?” she responded firmly, hands pressed up to her hips.
“I’m not ignoring you.”
“YN! Shawn!” a voice called out and both of their head’s turned in that direction.
YN let out a tiny gasp. Walking in their direction was a tall, attractive, curly haired, dimpled guy holding a sign with their names on it. He was beyond adorable.
“You’ve got to be kidding me?” Shawn whispered tensely when he heard YN’s shocked gasp.
“Hi! Nice to meet you I’m Ben. I’m the lead of the office here.” Ben shook both of their hands but his eyes stayed glued to YN.
Noticing his fixation on her, YN blushed and started to play with her hair. “H-hi. I’m YN.” she stuttered, flashing him a warm smile.
YN could see from the corner of her eye that Shawn was rolling his eyes but she just tuned him out. “Thank you so much for offering to lead us around. It means a lot.” she stated eagerly.
“No problem. Let’s get on our way to your hotel first YN. Shawn will you be coming too?”
“No he’s staying at a friend’s house so he won’t need to-“ she started when Shawn cut her off.
“Yes.”
YN whirled her body around so that she was now only facing Shawn and her back was to Ben. “What why?”
“My ride isn’t here yet.” he said simply, staring at the space behind her.
She flashed him a confused look and turned around to follow his gaze. There was nothing significant behind her. It was just Ben awkwardly shuffling his feet as he waited for them.
Ben noticed that Shawn and YN were done talking and grabbed YN’s suitcase. “Great let’s get a move on.”
They reached Ben’s car and Shawn loaded their bags into the trunk while Ben opened the passenger side door for YN.
She giggled as she thanked Ben and she could’ve sworn that she heard Shawn mutter something from the back.
***
“So...are you two dating? Tracy didn’t tell me that.” Ben asked, trying to make the conversation flow on their drive to the hotel.
YN rushed in to correct him. “No no definitely not. We’re just...” she paused a bit and looked back expectantly at Shawn through the rear view mirror, hoping he’d fill in the blank.
Instead, Shawn remained silent as he made eye contact with her through the mirror.
“We’re just work colleagues.” YN stated.
“Oh sorry about that. It just seemed like you were bickering like an old couple at the airport so I just assumed.”
YN flashed Ben a reassuring smile and the two continued the conversation while Shawn remained silent in the backseat.
***
“I’ll unload your bag for you YN. You go in and check in so it’ll be quicker.” Ben suggested and YN nodded.
She walked up to the front desk of the large lobby. “Hi! Id like to check into my room please. It should be under YN.” she stated politely.
The receptionist typed away at the computer before frowning. “I’m sorry but you aren’t showing up in the system. Is there another name the room might be under?”
“Uh can you try Rowland Inc? That’s the name of my office. Or maybe even Tracy Nguyen?”
The other woman typed away before shaking her head. “There aren’t any under those names either.”
What the fuck. “Oh um are there any open rooms available for the weekend?”
“No sorry ma’am. We’re fully booked this weekend.”
YN nodded her head in understanding and turned around to walk back to the car, huffing in frustration. What was she going to do now? She didn’t have a place to stay.
“Need help carrying your bag to your room?” Ben asked. Shawn however, was halfheartedly leaned against the side of the car and looked like he could care less.
“There’s no room.” YN responded, her voice just barely cracking. Today was just nonstop frustration. “My reservation wasn’t showing up. Something must’ve happened.”
Shawn and Ben quickly shot up. Ben wrapped an arm around YN’s waist and gave her a hug while Shawn stood awkwardly next to them, hands in his pocket.
“It’s okay.” Shawn said slowly. “We can find another hotel in the area, right?”
Ben shook his head. “This is the only hotel in this city. The next hotel is in the next town but it’s quite a drive. There’s a motel down the street though.”
YN just nodded and walked dejectedly to the car.
***
The three stepped out of the car and took in the surroundings. It was still light out but the motel still looked dark and suspicious. The sign out front kept short circuiting and there wasn’t a single car in the parking lot.
“Uh thanks for the ride.” YN whispered hoarsely. “I’m going to go in and check it out.”
She took a step in the direction of the motel but Shawn quickly grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
“You’re not staying here.”
A loud bang suddenly erupted from the motel and YN shrieked.
A pack of raccoons had made their way into one of the rooms and were now rolling around a trash can on the front pavement.
“There’s no where else to stay though.” she huffed dejectedly.
“You can stay with me.”
