A plurality of us — 28 percent — don’t. Organization by genre and size are roughly tied at 19 and 18 percent, respectively, and alphabetical would be up there, too, if it weren’t split into alphabetical by author (10 percent) or title (8 percent). The younger you are, the more likely you are to organize your books by size, title or author. Older readers, on the other hand, tend to organize by genre or to eschew organization altogether. 42 percent of people with a postgraduate degree have at least 100 books, compared with 10 percent of those with just a high school diploma. No matter what the home decorating shows try to tell you, organizing your books by color is not terribly popular. Only 3 percent of those surveyed said they line up their tomes by hue.

I keep fiction towards the bottom, transitioning to nonfiction-and I've made the top shelf into a movie shelf.

Ok, technically this is half bookshelf and half curated museum in honor of the 1960's tv series LOST IN SPACE - the two cast-signed framed photos you can see are from that show. But I am also particularly proud of the inclusion of a book written 124 years ago, namely Bram Stoker's DRACULA.

The center column is poetry at the top, some memorabilia, and then Lincoln for an entire shelf, and the two lower shelves very eclectic books based entirely on size. The two columns on the left side are non-fiction (biography, history, religion), including one shelf entirely to John Kennedy and his presidency. History is mostly 20th century America, but by no means all. The two on the right side are entirely fiction, mostly American. All books are selected first for my own interests but also and definitely for excellence in the actual writing. It is a legacy for my children, if they want them. There are many more books in the floor above, organized in various ways, but this shelving is my favorite.
