She ra reboot Bow headcanon

 Just a disclaimer - this is just a headcanon, I’m not suggesting it’s canon in the show or will be in the future (the showrunners can do as they please with their characters) but this is something I’ve been toying with in my head for a little while now: 

In my mind, this version of Bow is a trans guy  First of all,  His “totally practical crop top armor” covers his chest area specifically and he even covers this area when bathing: 

And he also does this with his dance clothes: 

My thinking is that he’s proud of his body, particularly his muscles and likes to show them off but he’s not comfortable showing his chest for some reason - that reason could be scarring or because he was brought up around women and girls. He’s Glimmer’s childhood friend after all and says “you’re all princesses around here, I’m like… the only one who’s not a princess”

For one reason or another, the area Bow and Glimmer grew up in doesn’t have many men and boys (perhaps they’re fighting in the war effort? Although women fight too in their universe so I’m not sure about this explanation). Bow asserts his masculinity but was socialized around women and maybe taught that showing your chest is improper.  It could be that Bow was born female (hence him sticking around/ being protected in this kingdom) but later realized he identified as male which everyone was cool with and he began presenting as such + perhaps always covers his chest to alleviate dysphoria.  Bow was also the only one with an entirely positive view of Seahawk when the best friend squad first met him and remains in awe of him throughout the episode - Sea Hawk presents an obviously strong masculine ideal in his appearance, being the first male character we meet besides Bow that’s central to the story/ isn’t just a side character,  and I think Bow wanted to be noticed and accepted by him.  As a trans man, myself, I can say that being recognized by others of your gender as your real self is incredibly euphoric. 

Ultimately, I love Bow as a character and whether cis or trans, I’m very glad that there’s a character out there showing that men and boys don’t have to fit a specific mold - they can be highly compassionate and emotive and have lots of female friends & support women & also be strong and secure in their masculinity.  Bow isn’t shy about the love he has for his friends and he’s the first to trust Adora when she’s still a prisoner of theirs, but he’s also able to kick butt on the battlefield - all of these qualities exist in the same male character and it’s fantastic!
