Perhaps I'm late to this discovery but the old Soviet adaption of Sherlock Holmes with Vasily Livanov and Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson are on youtube, with English subtitles. If you love the original ACD stories and/or Granada's adaption, do yourself a favour and watch these. Livanov's Holmes is gentle and brilliant, and Solomin's Watson is absolute perfection as his companion.

We even get a dramatized version of their first meeting, with a few alterations, though instead of the case from A Study in Scarlet they have attached it to The Speckled Band. And Watson's investigation of his unhinged new room mate is A+.
