listening to WTYP episode 156, and i have an answer re: the trope of tying someone to train tracks! It comes from Victorian melodrama, most notably Augustin Daly's 1867 "Under the Gaslight". 2 notable things about this production: they drove (and crashed!!) a real train onstage as the big showstopping moment. and also the train victim was the male love interest, who was rescued by the ingenue. Daly was intentionally flipping gender roles from other melodrama, but then people copying the train track trap flipped it back to be a damsel in distress.
thank you for your time and your podcasts.
traditional and based Victorian manly values, like getting tied helplessly to train tracks

one of the biggest advantages of customization in linux with keyboard only window managers is that you don't even need a good password. Typical windows users cannot use your computer, and for extra safety you can launch your window manager on all tty and remove the need for a password entirely (don't do that). You and only you know your custom system with absurd shortcuts to type to open anything at all that come from some obscure reference that not even your personal cia agent knows about.
